For ALL with Optima Yellow Top

I think I read a post within the forum someplace of people that have the Optima Yellow Top installed in their vehicles. I have a couple of questions;

1) Which vehicles did you install them in (was it a first gen CL, or 2nd Gen??)

2) If it was installed in a second gen CL, how did the Optima Yellow Top fit in the stock battery tray and the battery tie down? Was it kind of an awkward fit, or did it fit like a glove??

3) I know Optima's have the Yellow Tops, and the Red Tops. I hear that the Yellow Top's are not recommended as a starting battery (could be total BS, but wanted to make damned sure before I plopped down the money).

I think the factory battery is on it's last leg (if not hobbling, or crippled completely ). And I pretty much narrowed down the choices to the Optima (if they fit well and I am leaning towards the Yellow Top, and don't give me any starting problems) or the Interstate. I like the Optima's a little more, but than a big factor is going to be fit.

4) Oh and I almost forgot this question, How heavy is the Yellow Top? The Optima I had in my Explorer was pretty damned heavy in comparison to the factory battery, can I expect the same here?

i have the yellow top. The battery is a little smaller than the stock battery. It did not fit the tie down because the tie down wouldnt go down as low. But i rigged something up to make it fir nicely. I tucked the tie rods under the tray and tighenten it down so its all good now. The battery helps alot. Less dimming and i can play my stereo for an hour and my car still cranks like crazy. Its cranks fast. It is heavier also but alot cleaner. I had it for about 8 months and it looks clean. No corrosion at all. I am happy with it. I paid around 150 so its a bit pricy.

1) Second gen cl - 2001 Type S

2) Top coming down was awkward at first but my friend and I used a handheld sander (like a motorized nail filer) and just sanded away the edges so that it fit, custom job and it fits like it was meant to.

3) For our kinda cars go with yellow-top. it's more for media and sound. red i believe is for performance, go to optima.com or some other site

4) mildly heavy - not too bad tho.

The red-top do terribly with deep-cycling and will die with constant stereo use. I mean die die, not need a charge.

The yellow-tops are for deep-cycle applications.

what do you mean by constant stereo use? do you mean it will die if im driving and using my system or if the car is off and the system is just running off the battery?

the only reason i went with the redtop is because it would match my engine bay. could i take a yellow top and spray it red??? :fingerscrossed:

Red Tops go dead, they never come back.

I can't think of anything that would look cheesier than a rattle-canned Optima...

ya man you should just get the Yellow with a system - like said before you can play your stereo (loud) for a very long time and your car will still start fine. My dad played his for nearly 2 hours (700 watt RMS system) and the truck started like the stereo wasnt ever on.
