Aftermarket Headunit

Hello everybody! This is my first post and hopefully not my last because I'm sure I'll have lots of questions for you folks! Ok so here goes...

I recently bought a 02 tl-s. I love it. Alittle while ago the deck started messing up BIGTIME. The 6 cd changer kept asking me to put a cd in so I did and 2 cd's got jammed and the whole thing is just a big headache lol. So I've decided to put in an aftermarket pioneer DEH-P680NP. Now I've installed a couple of aftermarkets into diff cars... but not wanting to mess anything up on my baby I went to a couple of shops to see how much they would do it for. Then they started saying that I have to bypass the amp and get an interface for the speakers and all that jazz and I have never heard of doing any of that before. I've looked around on this site but everything I've read confuses me more. If somebody could please put a very straight forward noob explaination up for me about changing the HU it would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome

The factory stereo is made by Bose. Bose speakers are designed to run at 8 ohms. An aftermarket deck or amp runs 4 ohms. If you try to send 4 ohms into the 8 ohm speakers they become terribly distorted. There is an 'adapter' that goes on each speaker wire before the speaker, but from what I've heard they don't work at all, your sound quality will be miserable.

I'm not sure why you can't send the signal from a new deck into the Bose amplifier... I guess it just doesn't have the conventional type of inputs? Maybe someone else can fill in here...

Your best solution is to ditch the Bose completely, and get new speakers too.

Even simpler explanation: Bose speakers only work with Bose decks and amps. You can hack it a little, but it will sound like ass.

if you are looking for some decent sound and not really too big about preserving your "Bose" system, you CAN just install the new aftermarket HU in... there are those who have done installs without any problems and when the Bose speakers could not take them anymore, just change them out...

^True, if you really want...you can just work them for all they're worth hahah and then when they give out...just go out and spend a little bit for some better speakers

I had my sony HU put in by a shop....

at first they told me they had to buy those extra parts b/c of the bose system.

but, after looking and trying it out, they were able to get it to work w/o the extra adapters.

my question to you guys: will having an aftermarket HU w/o the bose adapters cause premature wearing out of the bose speakers b/c they are running at 4ohms instead of 8?
