Aftermarket GPS Head Unit?
Aftermarket GPS Head Unit?
How reliable are the aftermarket GPS head units? I been looking at a used TSX and cannot find one with factory GPS at a good price, the asking price is also over inflated.
I was thinking about getting a used TSX w/o Navi and adding a aftermarket GPS Head Unit from Alpine, Kenwood or Panasonic. Won't be as nice but it will suffice. Anyway, how reliable will the aftermarket GPS headunit be? Will it take long to load? Will the signal lose itself? I sat in my sister's tsx w/ factory nav and was pretty impress, never lost signal and was pretty quick at loading.

i have the jvc exad kd-nx5000, never once had any issues. map loads just fine, takes about 2 seconds to calculate a route for you. plus the navigation is stored on the headunits harddisk, so there is no need to insert a nav cd. you can listen to your music and use the gps nav at the same time. no touch screen though, and not double din. but i wouldnt trade it for anything except for maybe the newest most expensive pioneer headunit with gps.
If you're going to go aftermarket in-dash navi, go Pioneer.
Frankly for a TSX, since you can't replace the stock radio (you must simply add another 1-DIN unit below the stock HU) I'd say forget this plan. Either:
a) Buy a TSX w/ Navi (best choice, its an excellent nav system)
b) Buy a non-navi TSX and add a dash-top GPS like a Garmin Nuvi.
Just my personal opinion after having a navi TSX myself. My current car has a Pioneer N4 flip-out navi, but it only works because I could remove all the stock components and it fits well. It just wouldn't 'fit' or look great in a non-navi TSX.

I agree. I used my OEM navi today to pretty much take me everywhere. My girlfriend and I were very impressed.
