3 way set up

Hi guys, I have a question I have an 05 TSX and just had a system installed recently which consists of a pair of Focal 165 poly k for highs and a jlw6 for the lows and a couple of US amps

I already want to upgrade my front stage because I think the tweeters sound kind of harsh. I like the SQ but would like something better.

I just recently heard a 340 Dynaudio set up in this guys Honda Accord, it sounded really good. My question is what are the pros and cons of a 3 way set besides that they sound good considering the speaker and install. Does anyone have experiance with them. The shop that would be doing the install is very high end and has a good reputation. Thanks guys

I find the Focals kind of dry - they are crossed over at like 4500 Hz, which is too high IMO.

The 340 set is very nice, as are the DLS and Morel sets with the dome mid.

If I were wanting to do that, I would do a dome mid and dome tweet in kick panels, and the 6" midwoofer in the door. I heard this setup in a DLS IASCA-winning SQ car at CES, and it made me almost forget that it was a Hyundai Tiburon. Very nice sound.

I would NOT do it without the kick panels, though... I think that if you don't use the kicks (and kicks with a 3" dome mid and a 1" dome tweet are pretty damn small), then you should go with a set of 6 and tweet with a tweet that is smoother - DLS, a/d/s/, Morel, Dyne.

another issue with the 3-way is tuning... not a lot of options if you use the factory passive xovers, but the system gets complex if you want to go active, and you need another amp, probably.

Where ARE your tweets, and what are you willing to do with them and the mids?

Here's the opinion of an amateur who's never had 3-ways in a car, except his very cheap first stereo twenty years ago.

Every crossover point is a potential problem which requires great attention by the company that builds the component set. What is to be gained by 3-ways compared to a rear-fill approach? I think if you hate rear-fill (like Elduderino, I understand) and want to be 2-channel purist, or if you have a small cabin, I think it makes sense. Otherwise, I don't see why a midwoofer can't reach 3 or 4 kHz comfortably. To me, I would think of it as too risky unless I had somebody paying for the equipment for trial-and-error...

If you're really serious about this approach, I'd look at CDT's new crossover system which allows an unprecedented degree of fine-tuning in a passive crossover.

Are you referring to the zone adapter and/or upstage crossovers?

Derrick, the benefit of a dome-mid 3-way is that as a cone driver climbs in frequency response, its dispersion begins to "flashlight" or beam into a narrower cone. Not a problem in homespeaks pointed at you, definitely to take into account in a car with off-axis 6"s. Poor dispersion - why I prefer 5.25s in front...

The DLS 3-way is nothing short of phenomenal in that Tiburon.

I also agree that the DLS do sounds DAMN good very good midbass I found the they didnt sound as detailed up high as I am used to.. But then agian I have quarts in my car now which can be kind of bright. The 3 way system I have in one of my cars I love its Quart Q series 8, 5.25 and tweet I love the sound of it very full yet detailed. I am most likley going to go with the DLS Speaker in my TL because I really dont want kicks in this car but still cant go without a nice strong midbass.

Oh, never thought of that. That makes sense. Is that something that gets worse as volume increases?

I don't think so...

and as far as I know MBQ no longer makes any 3-ways... what happens when Rockford owns you. They only had the 4" cone mid anyway...

You are right they no longer do make any good 3 way sets and for the last 6 years that I know know of there only availible 3 way sets were in there premium line. I purchased a set of QSD 5.25 and tweets and special ordered a set of Quart 8 inch midbass and the crossovers were a modified version of there comp series xovers..

They weren't moving squat - just getting clones made in Asia, I'm very sure.

Apparently Rockford's claim on these Quart factories is less than complete... at CES a company called Third Acoustics was announced, which is German-made Quart car speakers, with a new name, NOT owned by Rockford. Waiting...

The Third Acoustics is from MB Quart Germany now that they are out of bankruptcy. They are planning on buying back the Quart name for the US.
