I got my new TL Navi last week. What a great car...

Anyway, after having read the manuals about 3 times cover to cover, I'm still a bit confused as to the trip routing algorithms on this nav system.

Mine comes with four (4) basic trip routing options. The route can be plotted by Direct Route, Easy Route, Minimize Freeway or Minimize Toll Roads. To test it out, I picked a known route and tried all four routing methods. None of the four picked the best route. They basically skipped over the obvious.

I've had other nav systems in the past (Philips CARiN, for one) and those came with routing methods like Shortest Distance and Shortest Time. This nav system doesn't seem to be able to compute a trip using those methods.

Am I wrong (I hope)?

I have noticed that my unit under easy route tends to minimize the amount of turns. Also, the unit on direct route goes out of it's way to minimize left hand turns across oncoming traffic. While I recognize that this is probably safe, I would rather decide whether or not to turn and let the NAV decide a re-route if needed.

Also, the latest update that came out about 4 months ago has a LOT more detail. I can not tell it that I want to go to a Chevron gas station (for instance) and it will show all that are in my vicinity and in my direction (with arrows pointing to each destination). I like the improved data.

Yeah, sometimes the Navigation System is kinda stupid. Sometimes I find myself driving in a big loop. But, sometimes I'm too lazy to care about where I am, and just want someone or something to get me home. It's great if you don't know where you're going. That's all I have to say.
