2 12" vs. 1 15"?

Hello,

I promise I tried to do a search on this but couldn't come up with anything.

I realize there are a lot of variables (power, type of enclosure, proper enclosure size) but assuming that you have everything done right, what's the "human ear" difference between a 12" and 15" sub?

Thanks,

Joe

As long as a 15 has a proper amp pushing it, it will hit much harder than (1) 12, but (2)12's will hit harder due to more surface area. 15's will hit lows very well, but take a little longer to load...so fast pace music like dance or house can pose problems for 15's. 12's load a little faster and hit lows pretty well. It is a more versatile speaker, so Rock, some dance and rap will sound really good. I personally like 10's and I currently have 3 JL Audio 10 W6V2's that I am debating whether or not to put in my car.

15s tend to sound muddy and slow and require a LOT of power.

12s sound faster and tighter and don't need as much power.

I can count the number of 15s that I've heard that sounded good on the fingers of one hand, and I've been doing this 18 years.

I used to have one 15 ORION XTR DVC and it was really loud in a vented enclosure. It pretty much shook my neighbor's houses windows. It played so lowed that when you sit in the car your throat just feels like you have been stuffed with base. I like 15 but 2 12's will play more variation of music. If you like to listen to rap/R&B then 1 15 would be perfect. Otherwise I would go with 2 12's. Just make sure you don't under power the subs.
