03 tl system questions

ok so i just picked up a 03 tl yesterday and can't stand the horrible bose system in the car. however i think the factory headunit is actually pretty decent and looks ok in my navi equipped interior. plus i like having a tape player and 6disc cd changer.

so the problem is everything else. i am not a fan of rear fill so i just wanted to get some high end components for the front. i think 6.5'' mids with a 1'' tweeter custom mounted near the door handle would work along with a 4 channel amp powering the front speakers and the other 2 channels being bridged to a single 10'' sub in the trunk.

i was wondering where the factory amp is located and if i would be able to fit a decent sized amp in that spot and if the factory wiring is decent or is it recommended to replace that. i also need to know if i can hook up all this aftermarket equipment from the stock headunit or if i need an audiocontrol unit or something similar to that.

and is there a rear rca input on the back of the factory unit? i just need something to plug in a male headphone jack to so i can pop in an iphone or any mp3 player to it for music. if not i can always use a tape adapter.

thanks for any and all replies.

i also live in puyallup so i'll probably be going to gig harbor autoworks for some help on the install so if youre around please ring in with your knowledge.

Look at the audio FAQ at the top of the forum. This should answer most of your questions.

You will NOT be able to use the location of the factory Bose amp for an aftermarket amp. It is located behind the back seat on the passenger side and is labeled Bose. However, as you'll see if you do decide to locate it, it is very small compared to any aftermarket amp. I'd suggest either mounting it to the back of the back seat (in the trunk), or somewhere in the spare tire well beneath the trunk mat.

Make sure the speakers you choose for the front door are not too deep for the opening, as I've read stories about that mistake before. Good luck.

thanks a lot guys
i guess i will mount the amp on the back of the rear seat. i also was curious if anyone has mounted a 10in sub in the factory location or should i just stick with an 8in?

i realize i only have 2-2.5 inches of space there so i have to get a shallow depth one but if i can fit a 10in that would be great.

and for any thread lurkers i have found that the factory deck does have an rca input so you can get a rca white yellow male to headphone jack male and wire that out to anywhere to hook up your favorite headphone slot equipped music player.

and i found out that you do need some type of interface from the factory headunit to aftermarket equipment and will most likely have to run all new wiring for the job. i play on getting a memphis audio one for about $150 but you can also get the rockford fosgate ones which are a little bit more expensive but better.

and thanks for the tip on the front speaker depth perfection. i need to make sure i get shallow speakers too.

because i am too lazy to find grab the factory bose amp can anyone tell me what the dimensions are of that space?

thanks for any and all replies.

Umm, I'm 1000% sure there are no RCA outs on a stock HU. There is a connector for a CD changer that you can buy a aux adapter from blitzsafe that will convert that to RCA's inpus for an MP3 or Ipod.
