A human running on the treadmill and a plane's wheels spinning on the treadmill are a valid comparison if:

The human were able to fart with significant propulsion (say after a case of Keystone, a keg of chili, and a dozen jalapeno poppers) to push him forward.

The only purpose of wheels on a plane is keeping the belly from getting scraped.

5 fuckin pages since I went to pick up my loaner???!?!!?

WTF guys...where are we on this discussion? Are we still where we were, or do we all figure that the plane would not be moving relative to the air (only the treadmill), so it wouldn't get lift & wouldn't actually take off (rise into the air)?

so what...are we saying the plane is moving? the only way the plane actually takes off is 1) if it moves faster than the treadmill (which opposes the originial scenario, so that's out) or if the engines are no longer pushing the plane 100% horizontally & are now actually doing the work to push the plane into the air a la Harrier (sp?) jets

lol...no idea - i think it's based on the number of people you give reps to. you have to give reps to 10-15 people before you can give more to the same person.

Are you guys going to make me read the last 5 pages to figure out why I'm so damned funny? I'm still arguing that as long as this thing is kept as simple as the question, the 2 situations I gave earlier are the only two ways it will ever actually take off.

God I am sick of you people not realizing the friction of shoes are not the same as tires on a car when driving in the wind. First off wind has no bearing on air pressure under the wings therefore when its cold and the runway is slick and moving 1/3 the speed of the plane in a horizontal plain on the x-access the plane will take off.

We talked about this the last 5 pages and no one listens.

Here's the math behind it

What are you saying? When did ice, car tires, air pressure, and bearings come into play here?

yeah probably... we've already proven that the plane will take off... happy reading :p

I thought the point wasn't that the friction would decrease if , but that the plane would stay on the runway, moving at the speed necessary to match that of the treadmill - under those circumstances, the plan would naturally never move forward or backward. I don't understand how the quadratic formula comes into play with a simple riddle.

LOL you might not be going anywhere but the plane's already taken off...

I think 19-21 are probably the best pages to read... maybe 18-21...

a bunch of comparisons and 'models' were discussed... as well as the usual banter...

I almost got $25 from JJ... until he converted

well if we add a flux capacitor, the plane can go back to the future where treadmills don't exist

hahaha

what if you had a wind source infront of the plane... the treadmill effect will counter act the wind until the wind is > the treadmill speed thus creating lift?

im no bill nye so this will probably be disproved in about 10 min

That really doesn't work because it said the treadmill would match the speed of the plane as in speed up when the plane speeds up.

The treadmill speed only affects the rotational speed of the wheels -- not the forward velocity of the plane. That's why no matter how fast the treadmill in the video is moving, the plane always moves forward at very close to the same velocity. What some people can't get their arms around is the fact that there is no direct correlation between the how fast the wheels rotate and the forward velocity of the plane. If the plane has enough thrust to push it forward at say, 100 feet/sec, it really doesn't matter if the wheels are turning at 1000 RPMs or 10,000 RPMS so the treadmill speed is irrelavant. The plane is going to move forward at 100 feet/sec.

yabut the treadmill was obviously moving faster than the plane right from the start...

I seriously cannot believe that there are people out there who doubt the plane would take off... But I guess there are still people who think the earth is flat after all.

what would happen if you were riding on an airplane & running on a treadmill facing the back of the plane at a speed double that of the plane moving through the air?
