Tail of the Dragon meet?

I am new to this site, but have had a Prelude Si for about 7 years. I just got a 2004 GBP 5AT TSX with quartz interior - very nice.

Does anyone want to go for a tail of the dragon meet one weekend in september or this fall? I've camped up there around Fontana Dam, it's no holiday inn, but it's pretty nice.

If I get a chance, I would like to stay in do a short run on the blue ridge parkway, atleast as far north as boone, nc.

Just throwing an idea out there...

Sorry guys. I'm from Birmingham, AL. It's a 5-6 hr drive up there depending on weather, traffic (in Chattanooga), and other stuff. I don't mind the drive though - it's a nice area.

I am thinking a weekend in October when the leaves start changing colors - it's really nice up there, but it depends on the UA football game that weekend. I'm up for almost any weekend this fall.

I live in Montgomery and I've been there a few times. If we were to hold a gathering, I woudl suggest doing it before the leaves fall. It gets slippery.

Im in Charlotte NC and was already planning on being up there around the 21st. prolly the weekend of the 17/18/19. I had planned on possibly renting out a cabin at shatley springs (40-45 bucks per night) and eating one of those famous country lunches they serve all day. The web sight is http://www.shatleysprings.com/index.htm
Check it out and see what yall think. was wanting to drive on the parkway as much as possible........who knows maybe we could make it to the tail of the dragon Ive heard awesome things about that place. its about a 4 hour trek from shatley springs though.

Killboy.com

Hmmmm, think I've been there but wouldn't mind it again.
Kind of a far drive from Michigan but the day we were there, they had hundreds of mini coopers up there. Even got to see one hanging over the cliff. Only thing that saved the driver was a couple of trees he was wedged between.
BTW: The photo of my TL was shot by killboy.com
My son found it on their site a few weeks after we were up there.
Awesome drive.

Let's do TOD and the pkwy. If we need to stay somewhere overnight, that's fine. any weekend in september is good.

cbvette - was that the 17/18/19 in october? (just checking)

that sounds good with me. I wouldn't mind taking the prelude up there again either....

That weekend looks open on the TOD calendar - I was thinking about that earlier too.

http://tailofthedragon.com/calendar.html

Who all's in for that weekend? Where do yall want to stay?

Shatley Springs is a little farther north of Boone, NC near the NC/VA border? I'm all for staying a little farther down towards the dragon and then driving north. I won't get in on Friday til late though. I'll try to get some plans and post something this week.

I have been several times, a few times with a group of cars, a few times by myself. I tend to drive faster with a group, but I still cruise along. I just enjoy the drive - some people like to 'race' through the roads - that's not me.

This will be the first time with the TSX and I'll be VERY cautious with it.

If we try to drive from Shatley Springs to the dragon, it will be a 5-6 hr drive (all day) saturday. Then another fun filled day of driving on Sunday.

Any suggestions for the itinerary will be great. I won't be able to make it up there til midnight on Friday....I may even try to meet up somewhere Saturday - we'll see what happens.

I'll plan on the weekend of 10/18 for now

btw - this site is MUCH faster after the upgrade

Driving the Dragon is in credible. I towed my Gixxer-750 up there last september. That was definately the best riding I've ever experienced on my bike. We have nothing but flat roads down here in Florida. I really wish I could make it up with my TL-S for this meet.

well, as of now, I'm planning on going. That weekend is blocked out on my calendar. someone told me on another forum that a section of the parkway is closed north of asheville, so we'll have to see about that. I'll try to get something put together in the next week or so....I'm busy now.

I couldn't agree more. I had my 05 GSX-R 750 up there last september. I put in 400 miles in 3 days. I rode the Dragon/Cherahola Skyway loop. That was absolutely incredible.

My question was actually in regards to driving up for a car meet. I have no doubt that there will be some driving going on. It's about 960 miles each way from my crib.

If I do manage to make it I would probably stay somewhere close to or a little south of the dragon. I stayed in Robbinsville (Two Wheel Inn) last time. Decent place and it was a decent ride just to get to the dragon. I was thinking maybe Fontana Damn of somewhere real close to deals gap.

How would I go about meeting up with you guys if I wasn't staying anywhere close to you guys?

The weekend of Oct. 25 is not good for me. I will be out of town on a business trip. Other than that, I think October should work for me. I might try to find a way to tow my motorcycle with the TL up there so I can enjoy both vehicles.

Has it been decided?

Guys,

I thought it was the weekend of the 18th? Hmmm, I need to confirm my lie for a certain weekend with my better half or she'll just make plans for Chicago, LA, NY, Las Vegas, Tokyo or some other such place. She hates country so I have to have something concrete in place well in advance.

I didn't realize the dates have been set in stone already. I read the thread, and it didn't sound concrete so I was just throwing out that the 25th wouldn't work for me. Alas, no problem.

I hope to make it, but we'll see.

Oct - 17/18/19 still work for me - i hope the weather is nice. camping in the fall in the smokies is nice, just cold at night. probably about 60F for the high and 40F for the low, colder as the elevation increases. not good weather for 'race' driving, but good weather for crusing, IMO.

Those are the dates I have marked off in my calendar right now.

that weather estimate may be a little on the low side, here's a graph:

point is, it will be cool and great weather to be outside in

message from above edited:

well, I have always camped when I went up there and just hung around the campsite at night and went cruising during the day. I'll have fun whether I'm in a group or by myself - but its more fun to cruise in a group.

I am thinking about camping at Fontana Dam Friday night and the staying somewhere around mt pisgah or asheville on saturday night. I won't get in Friday til late - possibly as late as midnight and camping will be much easier than trying to check in at a place that late.

I still can't decide whether I want to start saturday around asheville or the dragon. I was going to check out mt pisgah - I may try to camp/stay there saturday night.

Has anyone posted a link to this event on other threads? There's probably a lot of other TL owners in the performance link that are not aware that this event is being planned.
