Believe what you want. I'm excited for it. I'd love the ability to watch TV, Blu-Rays and such on my Xbox. And the fact that it's WAY more powerful than the 360 means bigger and better looking games. I'm all for it.

bigger and better looking? not really...there is a threshold thats been reached with the graphics. Yeah, they'll be improved upon...but not by a whole hell of a lot. That was proven with the PS4.

Why else would they branch into all this entertainment? People are buying consoles for that reason lol

Consoles will sell. I think most anyone over 30 isn't buying one. They find the games too involved and it gets boring. We like quick and easy.

There has been a huge sea change in the gaming world over the last 5 years. And its not solely dominated by consoles anymore.
Reality is...the vast majority of the people who buy these things rarely use anywhere near what the console is capable of...because they dont need it or have other devices which perform similar functions.

I think now that Xbox One is being advertised not only as a gaming device but an all in one, the age range expands by a lot. Whiskers said 30, but I'm thinking people that are even 40 will buy this thing. Even girls will buy it...and use it just for netflix though.

they didn't even discuss the capabilities of the machine... I wouldn't base judgment on the console before even knowing what it can do.
their presentation was clearly aimed at the shiny new toys it has... im waiting for more of the hardware specs and what they can do, rather than its integrated cable box.
you have to remember that launch games will be better than previous consoles but nowhere near close to the capacity at which these consoles can handle.
Game Companies will have to specifically design new engines to push the boundaries of what the machine can do.
see the first game of any franchise on a console. generally, the last one is exponentially better looking and more fluid. (both xbox and Playstation)
example: Forza 2 vs. Forza 4

I SOLD my 360 because I was only using it for netflix...then I remembered xbox live costs 50 a year (a waste of money) and I could pay a one time fee for an apple tv...or use my ps3 at no additional charge.
Yeah...Everybody look at the right hand waving around and touting all the new features....never you mind the left hiding the crappy selection of games...because the game makers are all fly by night/barely break even companies now that spring up and collapse like farts in the wind.

...or perhaps we have seen in the past, so many giant leaps, that now it seems the new systems don't offer anything new?
Where do we go from here?
Mobile gaming is huge compared to that of the console.

I'm still huge into gaming on consoles so

They announced that we won't be able to play used games (well we have to pay a "fee" when we buy used discs). So if games are over $60, I wouldn't be surprised that game sales shoot down
And I just thought about it. You won't be able to bring games to your friends house and just play. You would have to bring your entire XBOX. dammit

All these sources have their facts screwed up. I think the Xbox one does support used games, but in some weird proprietary form. But I don't think you can just buy the used disc off amazon and play it.

Xbox One > PS4
Game industry for tablets and smartphones has grown exponentially.
The console game industry has stalled/been shrinking.
More and more, people are using their consoles to stream movies (Netflix) than for playing games now. Why shell out $500 for a new console if it's mainly going to be use for Netflix when a much less expensive PS3, XBOX 360, Roku, Apple tv, blu-ray player, will do?
For roughly the past 2 years, console game sales have declined while mobile (tablet, smartphone) game sales have grown.

Microsoft's New Xbox Girds for a Smartphone Battle
Updated May 19, 2013, 8:00 p.m. ET
Microsoft Corp. will unveil its new Xbox on Tuesday. What's underneath the hood of the latest videogame console represents a multiyear odyssey of trying to figure out how to keep the machine "cool" in the age of smartphones and tablets.
It is unclear how many of the prototype technologies will be included in the final Xbox. But the efforts, described by more than a dozen current and former Microsoft employees and partners, show how the company is trying to get the formulation of features right to thrust the console back into the spotlight even as consumers increasingly turn to smartphones, tablets and the Web for their entertainment needs.
While consoles like the Xbox and Sony Corp.'s PlayStation once were focal points of many consumers' living rooms, sales growth of the machines has slowed, and in some cases reversed in recent years. Additionally, Nintendo Co.'s newest game console, the Wii U, which debuted in November, failed to meet sales expectations and led to slashed projections.
Sales of new, packaged game products have shrunk in the U.S. for more than a year, according to research firm NPD Group. In April, sales fell 25% to $495.2 million from $657.5 million a year earlier, NPD said. Console hardware sales dropped 42% to $109.5 million.
"We've seen a dramatic shift in the way people interact with technology, not just related to games," said Andrew House, head of Sony's PlayStation division, in a February interview. "The consumer is changing us."
At Microsoft, operating income at its entertainment and devices division, which houses the Xbox and its Windows smartphone efforts, plunged 71% in its fiscal 2012 year to $364 million, and below what it was in 2010. As the Xbox has aged, the number of consoles sold each quarter has also decreased, Microsoft has said in financial filings.

Future for Microsoft Set-Top Box Is Uncertain
Updated May 9, 2013, 5:18 p.m. ET
As videogame fans await the unveiling of Microsoft Corp.'s MSFT -0.66% next Xbox console, the future of another piece of hardware under development is less clear.
Microsoft has been creating designs for a simple set-top device for streaming video and other entertainment options, people familiar with the matter said.
The Redmond, Wash., company's efforts come as videogame consoles have become as popular for accessing digital entertainment as they have for playing games. Netflix Inc. recently said that Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 videogame console is the most popular device used to gain access to the streaming entertainment service.
People in the industry have said new game consoles could struggle to achieve the same success as earlier devices, such as the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Co.'s Wii. The latest generation of consoles have failed to gain wide acceptance despite creating buzz among hard-core game players.

Microsoft to Unveil New Xbox on May 21
April 24, 2013, 3:09 p.m. ET
Microsoft Corp. MSFT is set to unveil its next generation Xbox videogame console next month.
Microsoft and Sony's updated consoles are expected to offer a bump for the videogame industry, which has struggled to maintain sales as customers have increasingly focused their attention on games played on social networks or mobile devices.
Sales of new videogames, consoles and accessories at U.S. retail shops fell nearly a third in March when compared with the same time a year prior, according to surveys by industry watcher NPD Group. Sales of videogame consoles themselves were particularly hard hit, dropping 32%. Further, videogame sales have contracted every month since December 2011.
Meanwhile, IDC said it estimates the number of paying smartphone and tablet gamers will surpass the number of customers using game-specific hand-held consoles, like Nintendo's 3DS or PlayStation's Vita, by the end of this year.
In another sign of the difficult environment for videogame companies, Nintendo Wednesday announced its second consecutive annual loss as sales of its new Wii U game console, released late last year, failed to gain traction.
The videogame industry is facing increasing pressure as mobile devices, such as Apple Inc.'s iPad, not only continue growing in raw sales but also become more technically capable of powering immersive titles that consoles are known for. The proliferation of smartphones as well as tablets has both expanded the market for videogames and dramatically reduced their cost, with many of the top titles now costing below $5, or being offered free.

NPD: Total number of U.S. video game players drops
Sep 05, 2012
Fewer people are playing video games than last year, according to a new report from market tracking firm the NPD Group.
About two-thirds of Americans, 211.5 million, play video games in the U.S. That's about 12 million fewer, a 5% decline, than last year, NPD Says.
The number of mobile and digital gamers grew over 2011, while 2011's largest gamer category, core gamers, who focus on playing traditional console game systems, declined by 2%.
Overall, mobile gamers grew to make up 22% of the gaming population, an increase of 9%.
Gamer segments are shifting, Frazier says. "Looking across the total gaming audience, we see a tremendous impact from mobile gaming, particularly on smartphones and tablets," said NPD industry analyst Anita Frazier

one could argue that Sony is also an "exclusive" franchise.
if there is a market for it; then how come its just us talking in this thread?
wouldnt there be more than 3 people viewing this thread at a time?
there isnt much buzz about consoles on gplus either.
some one mentioned that twitter is active with fanboys.

Im all for the powerful game consoles (personally prefer the PS4), but the end may be near for them if they push the used game market out of the equation like it sounds they are.
#67
Goodbye.
I actually hate Sony's exclusives-style more than the Xbox because Sony purposely keeps great games on their ecosystem by shelling out more money to the developers. Really annoying. Xbox exclusives are small in comparison and the rest are just them getting DLC earlier. Sony's are huge IPs and also they get game content that will never go unto other platforms even PC, which is really irritating.

Console gaming isn't going anywhere. Sales aren't as high as they were because everyone already has one, the market is saturated. Also it makes sense for them to focus more on streaming entertainment, it's the future so why wouldn't they?
It sucks about the used game issue, but it's been coming for a long time. Physical media is dying and so are used movies/cds/games along with it, pretty much anything bought digitally in the past decade you aren't able to resell or share it easily (or legally). I don't see why this is a huge surprise to anyone.
Personally I'll be picking up a new Xbox or Playstation as soon as it comes out, I love playing games and it's handy for watching stuff. Tablet and phone games are huge right now but are worthless for anything other then a quick fix IMO, it'll get a bigger share in the market but real games on PC and console will never go away.

"Hardcore" gamers haven't gone anywhere. Some migrate from console to PC and vice versa, but there'll always be a large group that isn't satisfied by casual games like farmville and candy crush.
I find it sad that people are parading about the downfall of consoles. Wasn't there an article noting that HD televisions didn't really take off until the "next gen" consoles came out?

I feel like this neckbeard:
Consoles will still prove to be a solid value based on the hardware and features you get. You may get gouged on proprietary add-ons, but when the PS3 first came out it was one of the best and most affordable Blu-Ray players out there.

Last thing... I can't be too negative. I still love the Xbox controller. Most ergonomic looking one so far. They finally updated and improved the PS controller but I still think the Xbox will feel nice in your hands.

I am not parading the downfall of consoles...but what real game consoles are there anymore? The Wii U, sort of...and this Ouya.
There has been a huge shift, and while there will always be gamers, gone are the days of the original NES and the type of gameplay that came with it.
Now...gaming companies are barely trying to sell their games...why spend the extra money when some start up company makes a billion dollar hit retailing for 99cents on the app store...they'll just buy them instead and continue to hope for greater profit on that end....all the while marketing these mega media consumption devices...because the idea of true gaming really no longer exists on that platform.
There is honestly nothing "next gen" about these new consoles. The current consoles probably have 4-5 years of shelf life left to them. Its just minor hardware and software overhauls to attempt to make them more appealing mass market.
I don't hate everything, but I do take different view points. I have a friend who is a game designer who I was talking to last week, and I have shot video game commercials for an ad company that works with Konami.
So while these are my own ideas...I have formed them with an educated opinion, whether right or wrong.
As for the last quote regarding HD TVs...so what? Do these new systems output in 4K? Because the newest TV on the market is 4K and its retardedly expensive and there is no content for it.
Otherwise...these game consoles wont be pushing the sale of other technology since its already been around for quite awhile. I will reverse that fact...what saved the PS3 from being a huge bomb??? Bluray.

MS is looking to maximize profits by nickel and dime you to death... hope you like $7-10 a month sub fee for the console....
btw, it takes a 7980 CF or Nvidia equivalent to render 4K with acceptable frame rates and decent eye candy...

So after reading about what the new xbox has to offer and also require.. I'm rather disappointed. . I've been a pretty big xbox fan until now.Guess I have to pack my bags and jump over the fence to the PS4... As I'm sure will a lot of other people..

Console sales have obviously been declining partially because the 2 major ones have been around for 7ish years. That's a long time for the same hardware to be touted as new and exciting. Just like any product there has to be additional features and benefits in future generations and if those new features and benefits hedge against a possible declining market than the company is doing it's job. MSFT putting the XBOX One into home entertainment is required to be a differentiator and will help lead to it's success if executed correctly. As far as tablet games go, they are a "quick fix" for most like ZGuy stated. I have zero interest in Candy Crush or Angry Birds as an alternative to Halo 4 or Forza while talking online with my brothers who don't live in the same city I do.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'd rather buy an XBox One (if the entertainment side is done right) over another over-priced apple product that doesn't include legit gaming. I have an iPhone 5, and a MacBook Air but would rather buy a hub that does a lot of things great than a display medium that does 1 or 2 things great.

one could argue that Sony is also an "exclusive" franchise.
if there is a market for it; then how come its just us talking in this thread?
wouldnt there be more than 3 people viewing this thread at a time?
there isnt much buzz about consoles on gplus either.
some one mentioned that twitter is active with fanboys.
