Slow process for map updates

Sort of surprised the map update takes so long. My map version is 2020.10.09 so I'm updating to the newest version... 2 hours to download and then an hour to update in the car? Really? Oh well. I use google most of the time anyways but figured I'd update while the subscription is free.

I agree. This time seems very long. I plugged the USB in this morning, drove total today well over an hour and it still hasn't said updating complete yet. Hopefully in the morning it will be done.

Anybody else had any luck with the update? I put the stick in and it says updating but yet it never says complete. I don't have anywhere to drive that's over an hour long. I also tried to put the car in accessory mode and update that way but the car cut itself off before the update was completed.

Anytime I have updated the Navi, I did it with the car parked. I haven't had a problem with previous updates. I will download the newest update to a USB stick tonight and get back to you.

Awesome, thank you. Same here but it just never seems to finish the update, but the last update was easy. I even checked the USB to make sure there wasn't two versions on their and that it was the newest updated.

I made the key but didn't install it yet. I figure I will just run the car for an hour+ in the driveway ??

I just completed the update on mine. Left car in accessory mode, came back an hour later saying the update was completed.

Really? I'll try the same again. When I did that last time it timed out I think.

I did mine today. I was working in the yard so I let the car run and it took about an hour. Worked fine.

Finally got mine done too. Left it in accessory mode for a little over an hour and when I checked again it had updated.

FWIW, I had a hell of a time with the latest update. Saw on another forum that the contributor disabled bluetooth on his phone during the update. I did this and the update took about an hour to install.

Mine failed the format setup for the USB the 1st try. The 2nd try the format worked fine. It took about half an hour to download the update to the USB thumb drive. Then it took about 45min to install the update. I left the car running and it had no problem updating.

I had the Map program fail the format too initially. I closed that, formatted the key with FAT32 on my PC and then ran the Map program and then it was fine. I think my key was initially NTFS and confused the Map program.

Mine took an hour to download and 90 minutes to install in the car, but had bluetooth running the entire time. Went for a nice 90 minute drive and cranked out the new Jethro Tull album a couple times.

I have successfully updated navigation map on my Acura TLX 2023 Advance, but there are a few things that may go wrong and here is how I got to a point to make it work. I will assume that you downloaded installation instructions from Acura and that you read them.

First thing is to follow instructions to prepare for the map upload (making sure you have "Connected Features" enabled and you connected vehicle to internet). When connecting to internet you have to verify that you are actually connected to your home WiFi or to a hotspot started on your smart phone. You should also see the WiFi indicator on your screen. If you only see the AcuraLink indicator, you are NOT connected to your home WiFi or hotspot on your phone. I had to move my car up the driveway a bit closer to the house so I would pick up the signal from my access point. I actually sat inside the car while doing the last step (waiting for 10-15 min to turn the car back on). That may not be necessary, but I did it anyway.

Regarding USB stick: make sure you purchase good quality 32GB USB stick. Do not get generic ones. I got one on Amazon that was from MicroCenter. Not the best, but better than generic "noname" ones. I failed several times to upload the map using generic sticks.

Once you get the USB stick make sure that you format it on your Windows Laptop or PC. Do NOT use it without formatting. It may not work. Yes, they come pre-formatted, but do it yourself.

Once you download the map from Acura site to your USB stick (which may easily take one hour or more if using WiFi connection) verify the content as described in the installation instructions.

Now you can proceed to the last step, uploading the map to your vehicle.

I did not turn the vehicle on, but I put it in "Accessory Mode/Run". Once in Navigation Mode, I plugged in the USB stick in the correct USB port (see instructions). I've seen that the navigation system detected new map and short time later it started uploading which you can see by the blinking light on the memory stick. The stick will blink at first for short period of time - map detection. It will stop blinking for a bit and then it will start blinking during actual map upload. My USB stick was in transparent plastic so I could nicely see the blinking light. I was checking if the upload was going on every 15 minutes or so by looking through the side window at the blinking light. If the light does not blink and there is no completion message, most likely your upload has failed. After about 50 minutes or so I've seen the message that the update completed. I entered car, but the message went away and car went out of the Accessory Mode. Not sure if it is because I opened the door or because it just timed out. Nevertheless, I removed the USB stick and waited for 15 minutes inside the car. I started the car and the new map was there.

My past failed attempts were due to not so good quality USB stick, not properly completing preparation step of connecting car to WiFi, not formatting the new USB stick.

In summary, the most critical parts of the process are preparation with WiFi connection (in case you never done it before on the vehicle), using good quality USB stick, formatting the USB stick yourself, verifying content is copied properly, waiting long enough for upload to complete confirming that the USB stick blinks until the upload is done.

I hope this helps people who have trouble updating the navigation map.

BTW, an Acura Tech in the dealership told me he gave up updating map on his Acura after failing too many times. He was very pessimistic regarding my chances of getting it done. He suggested using Google Maps or similar apps.

For me, I use my USB, for 5,1 Surround music
Can't do that when using Apple, Waze, or Google maps
The Acura Maps interface isn't as good, but if you load
the device, with destinations, it works well

I have found that using a USB that is 3.1 vs 2.0 uploads the navi upgrade faster. In my TLX, it took about 45 mins to upload; on my RDX, it took close to 50 mins. When I used a 2.0 USB on the RDX the first time it took nearly a 2-hour drive to update. I only update the maps because I have the downloads free until 2027 for the TLX & 2025 for the RDX. I mainly use my google maps or waze with my Android auto.
