TLX type-s before and after OEM body kit install

Hi guys. I thought it might help to see some before and after photos if you're thinking about buying the OEM body kit from Acura. The car looks great on its own, but this kit makes it look more aggressive.

I’m definitely doing the side skirts on my Apex Blue once I get it back from the body shop. The Y-Spoke rims are also on my list.

The only thing I’m unsure of is the rear body kit. Definitely seems to add more style but do you feel it’s very noticeable and worth the cost? I’ve yet to see it in person.

Man.. those side skirts should have been standard equipment on the Type S! It looks so much more aggressive with those installed. Your ride looks awesome! Congrats!

I definitely think they are worth it. The look is incomplete without it, but I'm a stickler for detail I guess. I bought the rear part of the kit from Acurapartsforless.com and it was $309 total (including the shipping).

Did you install yourself or pay a dealer?

Clean! Mine will look the same tomorrow when I get the y-spoke wheels installed, except for the rear body kit. I've been undecided on buying them, but I think it does clean up the lines. I'll install them myself, but not thrilled about having to take off the rear bumper.

Did it on my own. Body kit, black chrome emblems, carbon fiber spoiler, carbon fiber rear diffuser and carbon fiber interior pieces. Dealer charge would have been $2k for install.

Nice!

can’t say I’ll do the carbon fiber or black chrome emblems but the kits and rims I will. I just can’t justify the price of the carbon personally but it does look good

I think the gloss black spoiler and rear diffuser look great with the apex blue. I do like the carbon look too, but it is a bit on the pricey side. I would definitely recommend the black chrome emblems. They also go well with the apex blue.

The Type S emblem is quite pricey.

I echo the sentiment that this should have been standard equipment. It looks much better, especially since it doesn't look like it was tacked-on Pep Boys special like the 1G kit.

The 2018-2020 ASPEC looked very nice in my opinion. I prefer the 2021 model TLX though.

The body aero kit? Or the A-Spec trim? They're two separate things. If it's the aero kit, I'll have to disagree; it looks tacked on, especially the side skirts (which it is, I suppose):

To me it just doesn't seem like it flows with the rest of the car, and it looks like it's stuck on with double-sided tape. By contrast the 2G kit is substantially better in that regard. It looks like it was designed with the existing styling in mind, rather than as an afterthought.

Ah, okay. We’re talking about two different things.

I had a 2019 ASPEC and loved the style. I don’t much like that aero kit.

Car looks great! Could you do me a favor and look how the front lip is installed and let me know if it's just some screws and clips? According to the link below 71175-TGZ-A00 is the part number and it's a replacement for the Type-S, but also an upgrade for any 2021 TLX (w/ out the front underbody spoiler). Looks like it in the pic they show and they also say that it mounts with the necessary mounting hardware (available separately), but don't give a part number for it.

The "aero kit" which was really called the "GT" package on the pre A-Spec TLX's first gen definitely looked tacked on and had problems with it peeling off over time. I had a 2017 TLX and decided against the GT package for that specific reason since there were reports of it coming detached from the car in less than a year. The A-Spec package in 2018+ was much more attractive and had none of those issues or at least my 2018 didn't in 3+ years.

Oh, and posted as well a while back the side-skirts should be standard on the type S. As far as I am concerned you may as well tack the cost of that onto the base price because it completes the look and shouldn't even be available without them from the factory. I would guess when they do the mid cycle refresh those being standard on the type S will be one of the tweaks done.

Okay, I ordered the rear kit to go with my side skirts. Obviously no front as we have the splitter.

Nice! You’ll be happy once you put them on. Getting the bumper off is easy. I had mine off in about 10 minutes. AHC garage has a video on YouTube that shows the install process. It’s very well done and I’ve posted the link below for you.

One warning though. Be very careful when you pull the sides of the rear bumper away from the clips. The plastic tabs that are part of the bumper that seat into the clips break very easily. Be sure to LIFT UP on the bumper and pull it out from the clips GENTLY. I broke a couple of bumper tabs on mine, but I wasn’t pushing up on the bumper and was just pulling it away from the car. I used clear epoxy to fix the broken ones and it worked great. If you break a tab and don’t fix it, the bumper won’t be flush with the rear quarter and it will be noticeable.

Thanks for the installation advice. I went ahead and ordered the rear pieces too. I think it will help balance the look from the side pieces.

Yw. I also forgot to mention to use masking tape on the rear bumper and the rear quarter panel where they meet so you don’t scratch the paint. They didn’t do that on the AHC video and they don’t explain how to get the bumper off without breaking the tabs.

There is a plastic shroud covering the underside of the engine that is secured to the front bumper with clips and there are a couple of screws on each side. While the shroud prevents complete visualization, it does look like it's just screws and clips.

I have to admit...I hated the aero kit at first. But it does give the car a "huskier" look. I got it for my TLX Aspec.

I ordered the rims/tpms/caps and they shipped today so it was quick.

Getting my car ceramic coated soon so I’ll hold off putting the rims on until they’re coated as it’ll be cheaper since they won’t have to remove them.

my car will be complete then!

petdocmb, I see that you have black wheel nuts on your Y-spoke rims, do they come with the rims you bought ?

In Canada, even though the Y-spoke/HPT package come standard on the Type-S, but the wheel nuts are chrome colour; and chrome nuts on a dark charcoal rim don't look good at all.

Okay, I ended up ordering the two wheels I needed from my dealership rather than risking two more damaged ones from them being shipped to my home. The price was about $110 more per wheel but the peace of mind was worth it. The wheels arrived today as promised which made it a 1 day turnaround. They’re installed and they performed an alignment which was needed from when I hit rubbed the curb. I wasn’t charged to install the wheels which was great.

Monday the car goes in for about 4-5 days at the detailer for ceramic coating on the paint and wheels along with PPF. Once that’s done my car is finished!

Side note - that box hanging out the window is what my parents call a CATio. A patio for cats where they exit the window and can be closer to the birds. This is my parents house I took the image at so pardon their dirty concrete from when they cleaned the gutters, lol.

I just got my car back from Brightons Auto Detailing in Naperville, Illinois. They did a stage 2 ceramic coating on my paint and wheels and installed PPF on the whole front end.

Very pleased with their superb work!

I understand rock chips happen and will happen randomly in areas not protected but the front end is obviously the main impact point so I went ahead and did it.

This shop does a lot of work on high end super cars such as Lamborghinis and Ferraris. I was recommended to them by my PDR guy and he was so right.

When I bought the car, it came with the Y-spoke rims and chrome lug nuts. I had to purchase the painted black lug nuts separately as an accessory from Acura.

Nice! Love the tinted windows. Black and blue go so well together.

You do get all 4 exterior black chrome type s emblems for $245, not just one. Still not cheap, but it doesn't say on the Acura website that you get all 4 of them for that price.

Ah, okay. That’s actually not bad then. I was under the impression that it would only include one. I don’t mind the stock emblems and I’ll be sticking with them myself but the smoked look is definitely sharp.
