Seat ripples

I searched for this and couldn’t find the answer but do we know why, from the images I’ve seen, the seats seem to be loosely assembled resulting in ripples in the leather. I can’t decide if this is a genius design to keep the leather from shrinking and ripping in the future or just poor workmanship. Anybody know?

It's just the way they are made. There are numerous threads about this. Here's one from over on the RDX forum. The seats in our TLX and RDX do this. It's never bothered me.

I looked on the Acura dealer lot and most did not have the sagging. Mine has it which I am getting looked at, because to me, it is unsightly and looks "worn"

Think its either "soft" leather or poor quality control. Acura uses soft leather for that "luxury" feel in the showroom. Problem is over time it stretches & wears.

I'm 5'10" @ 205lbs. These seats are 10 years old with over 100,000 miles on them. They are in a convertible thats used daily. Some damage to a seam in the seat where you slide over it getting in & out otherwise in pretty good shape.

I redid the seats in the Expedition with a kit when one of the dogs put a claw through it one. As for covering a seat in leather without a mass of wrinkles its not Rocket Science

Mine is also having the sagging after 2,0000 miles. No big deal as I sit on it so it really dose not bother me.

Mine had it from delivery. It bothers me because even after 57k miles and 3 years my Maxima didn't have sagging leather.

Yeah agree, I would not have taking delivery, how miles was on your car maybe they used it as a tester? I had my driver seat replaced early own in ownership of my 4G TL but in 12 yrs since leather has held up good, passenger seat stills looks pretty new and stiff but a few cracks are developing. Acura has never been known for good leather which is a shame they are already trimmed to begin with atleast make the part that is real good.

I believe you would have better luck with the ASpec seats. The Advance/Platinum seats are 16 way with adjustable bolsters and are set to allow for the additional adjustments. That and softer leather. Pick your poison.

This is a side effect of the design acura chose and will change it more than likely for 2022 model.

2004 TL had issue with butt prints very similar to the issue described here. Acura's solution was to split the section with another row of stitching to help prevent the wrinkles:
2004 TL with 1 stitch row

2004 TL with 1 row of stitching on seat bottom

2005 TL with 2 rows of stitching on seat bottom

2007/8 TL 3 rows of stitching on seat bottom

Interesting and surprising that seat technology hasn’t been settled to the point engineers and designers can’t predict the behavior of a material used for decades. But... If a little rippling means no cracks in 5 years, I’m ok with it.

My dad has a 30 year old Benz (350SDL) with 250K miles - leather looks like it left showroom few months ago - and he doesn't take care of it at all. I remember my 2015 TLX, leather looks terrible by 10K miles. On the other hand, 03 TLS and 03 CLS I owned had great leather even in 2015 when sold.

Op,

I went to the Acura dealership yesterday. There's something off about the TLX seats.. they ripple yet the mdx and rdx I looked at didn't..

I attached a picture but I saw the same thing on all the TLX I looked at on the lot
