Pothole

I hit a pothole last night. I saw it at the last moment; there was too much traffic to avoid the pothole. It blew out the tire sidewall with no apparent damage to the wheel, at least on the outside rim.

Acura Roadside Assistance was very polite and prompt. AAA towed the car on a flat bed truck to my Acura dealer.

Hunt Valley Acura says a new tire will come from Connecticut in about three days.
I’ll update when repairs are complete.

On the way to taking the kids to school a few days ago, observed several cars disabled on the side of the road due to pothole strikes. All the new warehouses in central Jersey means a huge uptick in semi trucks passing through the region. (I hope municipalities start to rezone some of the secondary streets. )

Sorry to hear that
That's why you need to negotiate, tire & wheel insurance, in your lease , or purchase

Certain city can reimburse you for the damage. Take some pictures of the pothole and your wheel and hand submit to your City Hall. That what I did a few years ago after it rained there were tons of potholes

Sorry about your hitting the pot hole. Be sure the dealer does a full inspection on the suspension.

The low profile series 40 tires that are on most TLX are unfortunately unforgiving when hitting a pothole. I wish that the cars came equipped with 45 or even 50 series tires. I luckily avoided a large pothole today as i saw it at the last minute.

! Did they reimburse you?? I bent a rim on a former BMW I had from a massive pothole which couldn’t be balanced correctly. I wish I would’ve thought of that since BMW parts are expensive as hell.

Sorry to hear OP. Has the dealer provided a loaner since an OEM part (if you had stock tires) needed to be shipped?

Also in NJ, it's not the trucks. The roads totally suck here. All it takes is a heavy rain or a few inches of snow and the roads turn to crap. I see it all the time in my area (central nj). I report the holes but they just put patches on patches and the next heavy rain or light snow they are back. I have seen some recently over 10 feet in length, literally craters. I won't even drive at night unless I am in the subaru outback which can handle the hits. I had 2 rims and 4 tires replaced under the wheel and tire insurance on my 1st gen TLX. The roads in NJ outside of the interstate and major routes just suck. I used to watch for deer but now it's potholes.

You can turn it in in NJ and they just reject the claim. It's just a scam on the states part here to make you think you will get something. Took a pic of the hole and everything. They "filled" it in the next day though after I submitted the claim.

Low profile tires are rough. My S5 that I have now has tire inflation at 42 psi. Hit a pothole hard enough the tire lost pressure to set the alert off. Unbelievable it did not go flat, set off pressure warning but the tire must have re-beaded. Long story short the tire was damaged (never went flat) but the rim intact. Tire was covered on the wheel and tire insurance, rim was fine but the alignment cost $200. I can only think the high tire pressure saved the rim. I wasn't running the psi high as that is the recommended pressure.

Jersey roads & northen snow are two things I don't miss.

I was trending back to an SUV anyway but this pothole discussion is nearly making it a no-brainer when my lease is up.

One of the few requirements is that the next SUV only has to be equal or better than the atrocious mpg I've been getting on the TLX. It will most likely be a compact or mid-size SUV under that criteria.

It depend on what state and city. I am in Los Angeles. It happened to me after it rain and I had 20" aftermarket wheels. I took a picture of the pothole and my wheel.
They ask to have my wheel fix then submit them an invoice and the city reimbursed me about 2 week after it was submitted.

It's very interesting, as far as MPG goes
Strictly, in NYC, side streets, etc., it can be as low as 15MPG
On the road; straight highway, I've averaged , 32MPG+, at 70-75MPH
My 2018/TLX/ASPEC/V6, got better MPG, with the crappy 9 speed
I guess it must be the weight, of the 2021

15 mpg is about right…for an SUV!

If I’m paying more for gas, I want my space back!

Agreed! Even before my tune, my 19 3.5 PAWS was far better than my 21 A-Spec FWD.

I drive in the suburbs but the lowest I ever see is 15mpg city and that’s abusing the throttle on a Type S.

NYC can be insane though so I guess I shouldn’t act surprised.

Update: Hunt Valley Acura replaced, mounted, and balanced tire for $344. Wheel and suspension were not damaged. I attribute this to the slow speed impact and the very wide but deep pothole.

Oldie but goodie.

"Wear and Tear on Roads and Bridges. New Jersey’s roads and bridges are already some of the worst in the nation, with roads ranked 7th worst and bridges 8th worst. But the growth in truck traffic will degrade the state’s roads and bridges even further. One tractor-trailer causes the same amount of damage as 2,000 to 3,000 cars, and for each additional truck mile driven, maintenance costs increase by $1.47. By 2020, the 80 percent growth in truck traffic could translate into an additional $3.7 billion in repair costs for the state. "

Glad to hear you were safely recovered. The trend to larger tire sizes helps to some degree, but the lower tire profiles don’t. Hit one in our Miata a couple days ago (small 17 inch tires with low 40 profile tires) just before a seven mile bridge had me nervous. Got lucky and didn’t experience any damage. Of course if your 2nd gen TLX and our 1st gen TLX doesn’t have a spare, the Miata certainly doesn’t. That may be the worst trend.
