Maintenance on the 10-speed Transmission

I’m not a big fan of the maintenance minder (MM) nor the fact that there is no definitive maintenance schedule for these cars. I looked all over and couldn’t find a link.

So the question I have is, has anyone performed the drain and replace of their trans fluid? It appears to be 4.8 qts and some say 30k miles, some say 60k miles. Which is it?

And lastly, how often is the timing belt changed?

I would measure what you remove and add same amount of fluid.

As far as I know, the 4cyl does not have a timing belt. It has a timing chain. The 6 cyl has a timing belt; not sure of the interval. Its based on mileage and/or age, not just mileage.

Timing belt on these are based on 100k mile intervals nobody here should have a type-s near 100k miles else you drive it entirely too much lol

This Transmission takes 5.1us qtz. of Type 2.x fluid. Below is the actual procedure:

TESTS > ATF REPLACEMENT AND LEVEL CHECK > CHECK

Be careful not to burn yourself by the hot part.

NOTICE:

Keep all foreign particles out of the transmission.
NOTE: Improper ATF level will affect shift quality.
  1. ATF Level - CheckPreconditions
    • Vehicle Lifted
    • Engine Undercover Removed
    • Engine Warmed Up
NOTE: Warm up the engine by raising the engine speed around 3, 000 rpm until the cooling fan(s) comes on.
    Procedure/Specifications

    NOTICE:

Check the ATF level right after shifting the transmission through all of the positions/modes and turning the engine OFF.
NOTE: There are two types of level plugs: integrated washer type and separated washer type.1. Start the engine.
    2. While pressing the brake pedal firmly, shift the transmission to P→R→N→D→S→2nd→S→D→N→R→P position/mode, and wait at least 3 seconds in each position/mode.
NOTE: To shift to 2nd gear, enter the sequential sportshift mode by pressing the paddle shifter while in the S position/mode.3. Turn the engine off.

    4. Integrated washer type: Remove the level plug (a).Separated washer type: Remove the level plug (a) with the sealing washer (b).

    5. Check the ATF level.

    Specifications
    6. If necessary, remove the filler plug (d) with the sealing washer (e), and add the recommended fluid through the filler plug hole (f) until the ATF overflows from the level plug hole.
NOTE: Using the wrong type of fluid will damage the transmission.Fluid Details
    7. Integrated washer type: Install a new level plug.Separated washer type: Install the level plug with a new sealing washer.

    8. Install the filler plug with a new sealing washer.

    Result
    • If the ATF level is below the proper level, check for fluid leaks at the transmission and the fluid lines. If a problem is found, fix it before filling the transmission with ATF.

Courtesy of HONDA, U.S.A., INC. Position Specification c The ATF is dripping from the level plug hole. Type Acura ATF TYPE 2

I also have a 21 TLX. It took me a long time to find the location of the fill/drain plug for the TLX. Looks like it is located at the front of the engine bay tucked behind a support piece. Not sure if this is a easy DIY fluid change. Interested to know if anyone has done the tranny fluid change on this generation of TLX. If so can you provide any insights/instructions?

The drain plug is located on the bottom of the transmission. The fill plug is located on the front of the transmission right behind the driver's side cooling fan about halfway up the transmission. It will have a sticker next to it that says TYPE 2.x Fluid. You do the above procedure then pull the plug after stopping the engine. The fluid should just dribble out of the plug.

This procedure sounds like a colossal pain in the a$$.

Why can't it just be a simple drain and fill.

This sounds like a job for the local Indy Honda shop.

Not really. If you like to save money and DIY this is entirely doable by anyone with a floor Jack, 4 jack stands, 3/8” socket wrenches and a tube and funnel.

I just ordered my 2.0 atf fluid and crush washer for $68 shipped to door. Will do a DIY with pictures once I get the time next month.

For RDX instructions also say to remove under cover. However, its completely not necessary for RDX, and some folks posted instructions how to avoid it. First time it took longer, but once you do it once, its a relatively easy job. Its easier than Toyota transmissions that require certain temperatures to set fluid level. Setting fluid level is easy on 10sp
