Completed a Road Trip with A-Spec - Lessons Learned
So I took a 600 mile road trip this weekend to Hilton Head South Carolina. Finally got some time in my 21-TLX A-Spec. Some of the things I learned and noticed were:
All in all, i'm enjoying the new ride and my 60 yr old self didn't mind being in the car for 4-5 hours at a time.
- Quiet road cruiser as compared to my previous ride (15 Q60 Convertible). Learned that the wheels have a helmholtz resonator in them, after picking up a nail and setting off the TPMS warning lights. Tire noise is the main source of noise in this car. The engine, transmission, exhaust are very quiet.
- The driver's arm rest on the DOOR is pretty worthless for the driver, esp for a 6'2" tall driver. With the seat back in the rack, the arm rest for my left hand is down WAY TOO LOW. The elbow is either resting on the high door sill or on your lap b/c the door rest is frustratingly too low.
- Got 32MPGs on the way down and 33 MPGs on the way back. I like having the option to automatically RESET the trip odometer after every fill up. Nice feature.
- The lane correction tech is off 95% of the time. It's good to enable while driving on a freeway (RT 95) when you start getting hypnotized by the driving.
- The navigation system ALWAYS showed more miles and longer times on its display than the maps found on the iphone or with Waze. The map is out of date and this could be a contributing factor in all of this. Wife would use her phone to compare the navigation attempts and it never matched. Acura navigation is always slower and longer for some reason.
- The front windshield is huge and slanted, so much so that you feel the heat on your hands and the steering wheel. My previous cars didn't seem to be as large as this car's windshield. So just made an appointment to get the windshield tinted to protect the dash and reduce the heat.
All in all, i'm enjoying the new ride and my 60 yr old self didn't mind being in the car for 4-5 hours at a time.

One thing I forgot to mention is - the turning radius in these cars is awful
Caught twice in a 3-point turn that resulted in a 5-point turn
The transverse engine plus 10AT plus wider rear track results in a terrible turning radius.
Wife laughed a number of times while I navigated the push button transmissions in the 5-point turns

Interesting, I'm also 6'2" and I've never found any issue with the armrest. I've always found it comfortable.
We got the Llumar Air series ceramic tint installed on my fiancé's Passport windshield and have been pretty pleased with it. It definitely provides significant heat and UV rejection. Makes it significantly more comfortable when the sun is shining directly through the windshield onto you. It also seems to keep the car slightly cooler in the summer, and in theory should reduce the load on the air conditioner. I'd like to install it on my car, but my windshield already has 3 rock chips that have been filled, which risk spreading when they apply heat to cure the film. Plus with the rate of chips on my windshield, it's only a matter of time before it needs to be replaced, rendering that $200 film a waste.
I use the built-in GPS on my daily commute just to monitor unusual traffic events. If there is unusual traffic, or if I'm going somewhere new and actually need reliable guidance, I plug in and use CarPlay.
@GhostTL09 My car shows traffic data without a subscription, but I'm in an area with terrestrial radio traffic coverage, so that may be why.
