Carvana and a new 2021 TLX

With the overbaked used car market still going on I sent my car info off to Carvana on a whim just to see what number they would throw at me - with no (maybe a little) intention of selling my car.

They offered me $22,700 for my 4cyl 2015 TLX Tech. $22,700. I paid $34,000 about 7 years ago so that's $11,300 or $1,614 a year to own it. Crazy. I really don't know what Carvana thinks they're going to sell it for, and in the end it doesn't matter to me, but it's pretty crazy IMO.

So - I booked a date (next Friday) to drop it off at Carvana and (assuming all goes well) get my check. I put a (refundable) deposit down at the dealer (they took $3,500 off the MSRP) and next Saturday I'll have a 2021 TLX Tech in my garage.

If anyone in Ohio is looking for a pristine 2015 TLX Carvana is going to have one soon but you won't get it cheap!

This happened today - I ended up going with an A-SPEC SH-AWD because the Carvana bonus made it easier to work the $$. Will take some proper photos in the next few days. Put 50 miles on it and couldn't be happier!

It's totally insane. The sales guy at Acura was pretty much saying as much - but also said he knows people who have sold to Carvana and got what was offered.

I'm remaining a wee bit skeptical until I get a check!

How many miles does your have? I'm at 62K and my 2016 Tech is only getting an offer for $19,400.

Right - I've been working from home for the past 5 years so it's only got 22,500 miles - which I'm sure is a big reason they're willing to overpay.

Sheesh, amazing deal.

I’m waiting to see what Acura offers me tomorrow for my 2019 TLX ASPEC SH-AWD with 12,900 miles on it. Kelly Blue Book says trade-in value is 32-35K and I owe $24K on it if I wanted to buy out my lease which I’m doing as a buy and trade. I got the car for $40K which was about $8K off the sticker.

Only reason I’m doing this is my Type S is about to be delivered. I do know this car shortage is working in our favor for once

Carvana offered me close to $18k for my 2015 TLX V6; my mileage is in the high 60k range. It runs like a top. I do want a new car but there are good options coming out later this year. Sadly, this chip shortage/COVID has ruined the market for new cars.

It certainly works on the used car portion - but the selection of new cars (at least here in NE Ohio) is limited. I didn't get the color I wanted (black for some crazy reason) but I'm good with the MSM.

My wife wants a Honda Pilot - I was looking at the 2022's and they're starting with the EXL trim. Basically the chip shortage (along with maybe some other factors) has forced them to lop off the lower tiered models and just focus on the more profitable trim levels.

The downside to the Carvana route is you pay more sales tax - roughly $1,500 more in my case. Not an issue as I'm getting a good 4K more than what they would offer on trade so it works but it's something to consider.

the next gen 4G Pilots should be available this time next year. Probably a lot of overall updates including tech, may be worth the wait

Ha - my wife has been badgering me for a new Pilot literally for the past two years.

With me getting a new car there's no way I can ask her to wait for another year to get one. I told her we could look at the end of Sept for one (the 2022's might be rolling in then) and once that launch sequence has been started there's no way to stop it if you get what I'm saying

I got the modern steel metallic with ebony interior. I was really thinking about a black one, as crazy as that is to keep it nice, but the Carvana deal has a time limit so I had to take what they had in stock unless I wanted to go without a car for a bit. Not a big deal for me as the MSM's look pretty sharp to my eye.

similar situation for me as my wife was complaining she also wanted a new Pilot four years ago (I was lagging replacing a front wheel bearing/wheel hub since it was winter) long story short convinced her to look at the all-new CR-V and she picked up a black/black EX-L in March. All the new safety and tech/infotainment sold it on me. Despite the 1.5T being all new, it was well worth the wait. It's been a great vehicle for her, finally pressed out the wheel bearing and gave the 2003 Pilot with 320k miles to our youngest daughter.

I'm guessing the new Pilot will get some of the new MDX chassis but perhaps the DWB front suspension. Biggest change would be all the infotainment/safety tech. Probably also get the 10AT on the Ody, and stick with the J35.

Post pics when you get your 2G, that's an amazing Carvana price for your 1G

She's got a CRV now which we both like quite a bit but she wants the third row (even though she would only need it maybe half a dozen times a year) so that's the way it has to be. After looking at the Pilots again last night I talked her into looking at a Mazda CX9 - I think that may be the new front runner which is fine by me. Mazda has done a great job IMO - really has an upscale look and feel to it.

Another great three row SUV's are the Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, and two different neighbors both got Toyota Highlander Hybrids.
Spent a three day weekend in the Highlander, and overall it's very nice, great gas mileage and very capable.

Nice...the turbo and AWD should feel pretty substantial for anyone coming from the base 1G (for either of the V6's, maybe not as much).

Still think they should've made the J35 the base engine though, like the MDX. NVH, fuel economy, and overall feel were their reasons for the latter, but why not the former since it's larger and heavier than the 1G? Sure, the base competition also uses turbocharged 4-bangers, but why copy their worst attributes?

It's a very substantial upgrade - both in performance and styling in my opinion. I was quite happy with the interior in my 15 but the new cockpit in the 21 is just awesome!

With regards to the 6 vs Turbo 4 - I don't really have a horse in that race although I see the benefits for staying with the 6 for sure.

Interesting you mention that. I have an old iPod Classic that I used with no issues on my 15 TLX that seems to have issues with the 2021. It drops out and loses connection with the infotainment system so I grabbed a regular 32Gb iPod with Bluetooth which streams just fine and sounds pretty good! That said - don't have any 5.1 surround on the iPod - is there a place where you can purchase digital downloads in 5.1 format?

Coming from a 19 3.5 PAWS and a 16 3.5 PAWS before that, I generally agree that the base TLX would have been nice with the J35 (290hp) coupled with the 10AT as equipped in the 22 MDX. But, the torque does come on sooner with the 2.0T which -- along with the added weight -- may have impacted Acura's decision to go with this motor. But in stock form, the 2.0T isnt anywhere near as refined or fuel efficient as the J35; not to mention how effortlessly that V6 pulled at highway speeds and how great is sounds doing so. (Granted, I now have a tune in my 2.0T. So, it'll probably run away from a stock 3.5 now.)

I got 31k for my 2019 tlx Aspec 4cyl with 25k from an Acura dealer. Carmax was offering 31,800. I paid 30k for it beginning of the year and since then put 15k on it.

Yes, there is. Or, you can make your own.

We talk about 5.1 Surround-Sound tracks (and 6-channel FLAC) on Acura ELS over here:

The files I shared a month-or-so ago are still online.

I also got a web quote from Carvana and cashed in last Nov. I sold them my 15 TLX tech v6 with about 45k miles. I travel for work so not many miles put on it since I got it used a few years ago. They gave me $24,500 for it and the dealer/carmax would match up to $21,500. Drove 2 hours to Chicago to make the sell. Stopped at my bank and immediately went to Acura for a type s that was available on the lot. I called a day prior and put down a grand deposit to reserve. I talked them down to $2500 from the original $5000 markup.

I’m very happy I did it. Got the max value from my old TLX with the crazy markets and got a new type s all in the same day! Looking back I’m even more happy due to all the issues with supply chain.
