Acura: I'm not mad, just disappointed (Type S rant)

They got me too, damn it they did. This time last year when they dropped the TLX Gen 2 introduction video, I saw a beautiful car called the TLX Type S drifting. They said the exterior dimensions were closer to that of a Panamera than a 3 Series (true) and while they wouldn't release the power figures of the V6 yet, they said it was co-developed by the Acura V6, Type R and NSX teams. This was going to be a beast! They went on to reference NSX inspired brakes, class leading performance, tailored interior, the whole 9 yards. I was thinking to myself, this was it. Surely this all-star engine would produce well over 400hp, the car would have excellent handling, be priced like a 3 series but be the size of a 5 series. This is the car that would pull me away from the M340i that I had my eyes on and end a my BMW run (545i, M235i, 440i).

I've always had a soft spot for Honda. The Integra Type R and S2000 were cars I wanted badly as a teen. Then a friend bought a TL Type S and I was in love. That Type S was better looking, bigger, had a nicer interior and was as fast or faster than pretty much everything in the segment for less money. A total home run. But me, like many other enthusiasts, turned away from the brand when it lost its performance aspirations in subsequent generations. This would be the car that brought me back, right? I was pumped!

Then the power figure came out (355hp). Hmmm only barely more power than the S4 that's been out for a long time. Then the weight (4200lbs), heaviest in the class. Then the realization that yes, while the exterior dimensions were in fact similar to a 5 series, the interior was 3 series sized. Obvious signs of cost cutting triggered my OCD. Why is the ambient lighting only for the front? Why don't the rear doors get the metallic trim the front doors get? Why does the Advance 4cyl trim have more features? Why isn't a digital dash even an option?

Look, don't get me wrong, it looks like a fine car. It'll surely be more reliable than a BMW in the long run and it's definitely pretty but I don't think it warrants the giant hype party Acura is trying to give it. It's a 355hp, 4200lb car with mid size exterior dimensions, compact interior dimensions, a very good FWD based AWD system and a transversely mounted engine. It looks like its performance will fall towards the tail end of the segment despite being the newest entrant.

What's the party for again?

Side note: I lease for work and in Canada the leases for the TLX Type S are terrible. Despite the MSRP being $20K less, the real world lease payment of the loaded M340i I picked up (pictured below including Individual and M Performance options) was nearly identical to what I would have had to shell out for a Type S with the aero kit.

Damn, beautiful M340i! You certainly didn't make any wrong choices here. I really love those wheels. I have yet to see them in person.

Clearly if Honda wanted to be class leading, the M340i would have been the benchmark. But it wasnt and that should have been an indication that they only wanted to be in the conversation in this segment. (...and it has been in the conversation. How much staying power that has, time will tell.)

Whether or not it flies with hardcore enthusiasts is obviously irrelevant to the brand.

If one's been following the brand over the past decade or so, this s/b fairly

Beautiful car! congrats.

Go enjoy your BMW and not waste time here brother. You got a nice toy, don't worry about Acura and TYPE S. Look forward and not backward. We got enough enthusiasts and senior members here.

PEACE!

Not any better than what you do by going to Second Cup and praising and telling bystanders to buy a Second Cup coffee without ever buying one yourself ... see works both ways. Clearly he was really interested in buying one before specs were finalized, then he joined the growing meh group and got something better.

Never knew leasing a BMW 3er would like that would be almost the same as a car that is $20K less in MSRP.

Then again, I don't know much about the world of leasing either.

Very nice car, OP. I was in a similar mindset as you. Been a long time owner of multiple Acuras but had begun to lose faith because of my very problem-laden 2019 RDX. Thought for sure the TLX Type S would bring back some of that missing mojo, what with it being a brand new platform built on a clean sheet of paper. But no, it’s just more disappointment.

One word of caution if you’re going to hang around here. You have to at least occasionally say something nice about Acura and the TLX, or else the locals won’t let you play.

Yes, but he did not buy the car at the end of the day. Why come to rant and waste time? I am not trying to discourage him but why waste time here when he got a beautiful car. I am the first one to say he got a beautiful and amazing machine. If I was him, I would go enjoy the car and stay within the BMW community rather than come and waste time. But as we all say, it's a free forum and he can stay. If he thinks he will get any value, then good for him. We will add one more "true enthusiast" to this forum

Or he is someone already here with a fake id...very possible!

Yeah I think it's the "perfect storm" of factors. I have a loyalty lease rate, some incentives and BMWs tend to have high on paper residuals. The Acura has more realistic residuals, a high interest rate and no incentives. All added up it's crazy how close the payments were!

On the flipside, traffic in the 1G TLX subforum is down about 75%.

BMW is paying Acruraaw's lease.

"No, dont buy this overstated Honda, buy BMW where you get All this car for almost the same payment! Just look at these non-professional pics I took myself at the BMW dealership!"

BMW's deal is to sell the same car twice. Good lease rates on the initial buy with liberal discounts & rebates. Second time its a BMW maintained CPO with relatively low mileage (best rate 36X10K miles) still has some of the original warranty left & additional warranty packages available. Also the product is one of the class leaders.

they only wanted to be in the conversation in this segment / the M340i would have been the benchmark.

Problem is the expectation that the marketing creates with these words:

They went on to reference NSX inspired brakes, class leading performance, the TLX Type S drifting, most powerful Acura sedan ever etc. They never said they were benchmarking an old car (Audi) about to be replaced or that said Audi was no longer a competitive product among its German price mates.

The fact that the TLX-S is a great family car gets lost in all the desert dust the TLX-S kicks up in the marketing vids.

+1, and all the while of this ranting and raving, there hasn't been a single formal test/review of the Type-S released yet.
Go figure, anyway curious to see what SG, AoA, C&D, MM,.... say when their reviews come out.

Must have missed the ranting & raving. Expect that will come after C&D, R&T & MT put their Xboxes on it & publish the results. Can't see people getting all wound up over speculation vs already known numbers. Besides nobody here gives a sh*t about 0-60, 1/4 mile or VIR lap times.

So right now we have a great radio in what some expect to be a mediocre Sports Sedan, if the Audi S4 was truly the benchmark, or a very nice family car. The magazines test might make everybody happy & show competitive Sports Sedan numbers so all can be happy about 0-60 again etc.

Here being the narrow focus of the TLX/TLX-S. I don't do electrics, not enough noise no matter how quick they are.

Also its been a while since interest in 0-60 died here. For a number of years there was a lot of hopes and dreams that the Type-S was going to stick it to the Germans & reclaim the TLX's rightful place as the 3G's successor.

Unfortunately I think that dream had a heart attack the day the 355BHP X 4200lbs was announced. Being overweight will kill you if you run to fast or believe a marketing departments that has been consistently wrong since 2009.

Next at bat maybe a TLX Type-R

Did anyone really expect the TLX-S to compete with the 340i? Like you can fall for marketing hype but everyone who actually knows Honda/Acura knew this thing would be well about exactly what it is. In a year or two when the Honda/Acura enthusiasts get ahold of theirs and demand falls back down to earth you'll see incentive programs and the works to move these cars and at 45-48k it will be a relatively good value for what it is and will lease better for those that prefer that option as well (and who knows what the tuner community will do to this thing given some time if that's your thing). I didn't even have the expectation that it would be that competitive with the S4 but it is which is a pleasant surprise but expecting it to outgun the 340i in literally any capacity means you've been living in a fantasy from the start.

The nostalgia from the TL Type S really put the bar higher than it had any place being, that car didn't compete well with the Germans either on anything other than being cheaper.

That looks like one of the M performance M340’s. Are you in Canada? Those versions aren’t offered down here

Probably the nicest bmw I’ve seen. Lol. I personally can’t see why BMW barely improves on there designs. I feel like all generation of the 3 series look exactly the same. I guess that’s why they are changing up the grills now. I also think BMW interiors are very lackluster when compared to the Benz. it just doesn’t feel premium enough for the price point.

I'll take it a step further and say that I STILL like the ZDX and 4th gen TL
but no, currently I don't own an Acura and I'm not mad about it. I think everyone
should post wherever they want, whatever opinion they want. Makes for a fun
discussion if you can manage to keep your ego and feelings out of it.

I hAve been saying several of the omissions you pointed out in paragraph 3 since the 4cyclinder was introduced, real heads scratches. I think much like the Honda Ridgeline a lot of features and interior amenities are being lost in the name of useless safety features that are now standard and the cost has to go somewhere, hence we have omissions like no rear trim or ambient lighting, unfelted glove box, exposed trunk underside, homely rear ducts etc.

I too am disappointed in the weight, but more so the HP numbers should have been more to offset that weight. Atleast the full torque is available at 1400 RPM, but the Type S won't be outrunning the competition. It is a looker though and I havnt cancelled it out just yet. PS your M340 is sweet!

I think the irony is that Honda/Acura cars in the past weren't horsepower monsters, but they were quick because they were lightweight. That's still true for cars like the Civic, Accord, and CTR when compared to the compeition, but Acura is going in the opposite direction without increasing the power to compensate. The company used to have the scrappy "do more with less power" mentality, which is fine and admirable, but making the car bigger and heavier goes against all that.

But aren't there so many people here that kept on complaining about NVH? In order to reduce it, you will need to add weight. Want to reduce NVH but not add any weight? Then you will have to increase the costs significantly above what it is even more now. Of course, then people will complain it doesn't have the badge to demand those prices.

The guy started a new thread and didn't dump it into one of the more active topic threads. Not a huge BMW fan (do to many problems with my last new one way back which by all reports BMW has gotten way better with reliability issues) but did enjoy the pics. I guess if I was leasing, that BMW would be tough to pass on if the lease payment was in the same ballpark. Not a fan of the matte black paint or red sport interior but it does look nice, just too much flash for me in those colors. .
