Update received from ZF regarding 9 speed software update

2015 TLX SH-AWD Elite BWP
I had a loaner 2016 MDX for 35 days which ironically shares the same ZF 9 speed transmission we have and let me tell you it felt like a totally different animal than my TLX. No shift jerks, better and responsive preppy launches and the parachute feeling is close to only 2% which is very very reasonable. Me and the wifey are in love with it.
I've seen people mentioning that MDX 9ZF it feels better.
Why Acura is not able to replicate that on TLX?

Plus the MDX w/9AT hasnt been out as long as the TLX so less chance of reported "shifting starting sucking after X months". Also I would think the driving habits of an SUV are different than those of a sporty sedan.

Sorry to hear that buddy. Im equally as pissed off after receiving my car back after 35 days and this problem is still not fixed.
#125
I think it has to do with things like it being a bigger vehicle, different final drive ratio, etc.

It didn't takes months for our cars to start acting up. It actually started by the 3rd day. And driving habits, it really feels a lot more sportier than my TLX. Precise acceleration when you need it is right under the right foot when you need it without the parachutes holding u up.

The only thing interesting about it was that the loaner I got had less than 200 miles on it, it was basically a brand new vehicle yet it exhibited those symptoms.
I think a lot of it is software but I still wonder if Acura can ever find a happy medium for the software that will help them fulfill their CAFE goals AND make the customer happy (granted, most owners might be OK with how the transmission acts, "it is what it is" so to speak)

I took my car into the dealership last week to get the update for the harsh shifts, received a 2016 ILX loaner which was very fun to drive and the DCT was smooth as butter.
I got the car back and immediately noticed the 1-2 shift was smooth, 2-3 was not. It actually felt worse. I decided to just drive it around for the rest of the week to see if it would improve. It hasn't and i'll be calling the dealer again sometime this week to see what they can do.
My car was actually tolerable before the update. Now, not so much.

Also they didn't have the door handle for my sensor issue and they have to order it for Wednesday.
I hope it will be done on Wednesday

Mine is in the shop as well. They said the update doesn't apply to my car (it didn't show on their computer screen). I handed them a printout and they still seemed unsure that it applied. Guess it depends how they interpret the meaning of the word "ALL" :rolls eyes:. They said what do you want us to do? I said well then call tech. line and see if they have anything! Then, annoyed, I told them to look into the ongoing VCM vibration issue, too.

Stew: ditto to that; multiple personality disorder; lol
The Tech at my shop, tried to tell me that the car has to get used to your driving habits; give me a freakin' break. The other 5 Acura's, I've had with 5 & 6 speed tranny's NEVER had these problems. I've notified Acura Customer Relations about a possible Lemon Law claim, if the car isn't fixed next Tuesday; (4th Service visit); we'll see

^ I don't think ACR cares one way or the other. we are just mild nuisances to them. I have written and called them so many times.
Texas makes it hard to use the lemon law.. in that it takes a lot of paperwork and time off from work to do it.

It has now been over 2 weeks since the application of TSB 15-038 for my TLX (as you know, this was supposed to help with the rough shifts). After all the "learning" that has taken place over that time, I can easily say that the car is now shifting at least as bad, if not worse (yes, *worse* - because of the gears 4-5 bump) than before the software was updated.
So you might not waste your time with this update, although "your mileage may vary". Frustrating.

Im a bit surprised and worried that people experience different results from the update. Mine, for one, is much better after the update. For those who have it worse, I can only hope that the tech did the update correctly. On the notes in both 034 and 038 tsb, they have to make sure that something is up to date before they update the pgm-fi
With the zf9 issues across different car brands, im wondering if a class action lawsuit is possible.

Somehow luck is in my favor, possibly? I had just scheduled an appointment with my service department for Friday for the door seal cracking sound (weather stripping.) I hope, hope, hope that they will also be able to try this TSB on my car.
I am very hopeful that this is a better fix than the previous TSB. It is a good thing that it very clearly spells out that this is a fix for the 2-3 shift.
FYI: When I was in communication for ZF, they were still in the process of working with Acura (end of July). This is probably the result of that collaboration.
Now that our TLXs have been on the market for a year, maybe the V6 transmission is finally actually ready!

Hi ,
Got the car back.
They said they apply some updates , but the service guy said the 15-038(American TSB ) cannot find it on our Canadian list , sic.
On the service report is written the following:
-Trans hard shift
-Done update (no number specified)
-Done ECM/PCM Reset
-Done Idle Learn
-Erase code
-Done TAECH IN (what is this is ?)
-Re-erase code ???
-Road Test - OK.
Now my findings: the shifts are smoother. The 2-3 is barely perceptible , but now I think I feel the 3-4 or 4-5 (just a tad more than before) .The surge at the stop seems to be less also I notice that the "free wheel" feel is shorter the dog clutch seems to engage faster.
All that is good BUT I feel now that entire transmission is more "lazy" as response even in Sport+ which for me is a big let down.
I'll wait maybe it is on process to re-learn my driving style.
We will see over few weeks.
Cheers

UB2 = V6
UB3 = SH-AWD
Also, a quick scan of VINs at my local dealer, I could not find a SH-AWD above 10,100!!
But plenty of V6's (FWD) over 10,000

Car goes in again next Wed. for 15-040. It came out literally while my car was there yesterday so they didn't find it in time to start the work. Acutally, they didn't know about it even today when I called; they had to check and call me back. The service scheduler was audibly happy about this. Apparently a lot of people call with the 2-3 shift issue and now she has something directly applicable to tell them. I'll report back...
Edit: by the way, they gave me a '16 MDX as a loaner yesterday, no hard shift issues.

I think you're right, my VIN is UB2 and looking on a couple lots all the SH-AWD's have UB3 and P-AWS have UB2.

More observations from today.
Overall , I think is better than before for me. The 2-3 is still there but very subdued (probably a regular driver wouldn't feel it) , but now I can feel 4-5 more than before (but is still subdued , again a regular driver would think is just normal) . That "free wheel" feeling when you braking for s top is somehow different . Before I think was longer because , I believe , the transmission was downshifting directly from 6(5) gear to 3(2) and was waiting for rev match (my personal theory) , but now I can feel the downshift 5-4-3-2 which is quite fast and I feel that the transmission "holds" the car when you braking , which it should be. It's still a small bump when is downshifting but not bad and I can live with it .
The only "beef" is still the amount of gas pedal travel to get an response from transmission.
Maybe is the learning curve of transmission , I'll see in time , but overall I think is better than before. Hopefully it will stay like that.

I have a 3'15 SH-AWD and am bringing it in to the dealer this Saturday... really hope that this will fix the shift issues as the 2-3 shift is absurdly bad in my car. Just bought the car July 31st too, can't begin to express how disappointed I am in the TLX. My VIN isn't covered on the service bulletin, but hopefully they can try the update regardless. Every acceleration from a stop is a reminder that I shouldn't have traded in my Infiniti.

I'm not a complete TLX hater though (I mean, I bought the car right?) as there are some things I do like better. The seats are definitely a step up in comfort (perhaps not sportiness, but that's subjective), the road noise is way down, the ambient light sensor seems more intelligent (my G would often trigger under highway overpasses), love the puddle lights, and I can feel the increase in power on the highway. But as it stands now, the transmission issues are a deal breaker. C'mon Acura, make it right. If you can't fix the issue, then buy it back. I used to be a believer in Japanese quality (of course I guess this one is American), but now I'm beginning to see you get what you pay for. If only I could go back in time 3 weeks... would definitely have gone with the Q50 instead. Wanted to try Acura because I used to drive Hondas (Fit & Accord) before my G25... mistake!
Anyways, hopefully I'm not being too melodramatic and who knows maybe when I bring my car in it will actually get fixed? But at this point in my first month of ownership, I feel like I got robbed. Shame on you Acura.

Going to pick up my car for the second time tonight. Will update you all.
1st time they had it was from July3rd to August 7th (yes, 35 days) then i dropped it back August 14th till today...
1st loaner 2016 MDX, no issues in tranny at all, not even the parachute feeling
2nd loaner is a 2016 TLX V6 base... Has the 2-3rd harsh shift and also parachute feeling.

G25x, traded it in to get the latest tech goodies (LED lights, semi-autonomous driving, a bit more mpg) and a bit more horsepower is never a bad thing right? My infiniti was great, a little lower on power but that's on me because I bought the g25. Handling and overall feel of sportiness was far superior to the Acura. I'd say quality control was a lot better too, but this of course is based on a sample size of 1. My TLX came with paint defects on all door handles (missing paint that the dealer fixed thankfully), the door material is so flimsy if I rest my leg against it it will squeak and push inwards, the arm console gives under pressure, my rear camera swaps green with orange, the passenger belt buckle often rattles against the center console, the haptic feedback touchscreen sometimes creates a weird buzzing noise, and of course the awful 2-3 shift issue (some other oddities like in really slow traffic the transmission makes clunking noises as it becomes confused).
I'm not a complete TLX hater though (I mean, I bought the car right?) as there are some things I do like better.
