TLX Jerks or Jumps at Stop

Hello,

My wife recently leased a 2015 TLX (she previously owned a TSX.) She loves the car except for an issue at stop lights/signs. Approximately 25% of the time, whenever she stops, the car will jerk or jump, sometimes even moving another 6-12 inches forward. I've been able to replicate it, but without any consistency (can't find a rhyme or reason as to why/when it happens.)

We will likely need to take it back to dealership for service, as it only has 2000 miles on it. Just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this.

Thanks!
Matt

^^ Yep...Just read some comments in the "problem" section. Some owners have experienced the symptom you are describing but not generalized.

For the record, I don't own a TLX although I'd love to get one....still sitting by and watching the reported problems and fixes before jumping in.

My 2.4 has always slammed into Drive, then when it engages First and Second after backing out of my driveway when cold, plus when accelerating after slowing in traffic it takes its time deciding what gear to be in. The biggie, though, was when I slowed to a crawl for pedestrians, then SLAM, the whole car shook as it downshifted to First. We thought we'd been hit. I use Sport mode all the time but I doubt that's the issue. The 8-spd. DCT is still a work in progress and maybe there'll be a software update somewhere along the way. But, like us (also TSX graduates), your car goes away at the 3-year mark and it's on to something new.

Matt, I have the V6, AWD Advance and am finding increasingly my car "slams and jumps" when starting from the auto idle stop mode. It was fairly smooth for the first 1000 miles and there was an easy learning curve initially to get used to the feature and make it smooth....which was to release the brake and allow a split second for the engine to start before pressing the accelerator...but now that doesn't seem to be keeping things smooth any longer at all.

Weather, I have a TLX I'd be glad to sell you if you're interested. No reasonable offer will be refused. Send me a PM. Metallic Luster/grey.

I just picked up my TLX this morning after being serviced for a bad battery.
On my way to work, I come to a red light and after stopping the car jumped forward twice causing me to depress the brake harder. This repeated every time I tried to stop or slow down.

I didn't have this issue prior to the dealer replacing the battery. New battery and now new problem...

"Slams and jumps" isn't what I experience.. the car will lurch a bit if you depress the pedal too far, too soon, before the car restarts or if you don't wait a second at a stop with the Idle Stop off.. the car searched for the right gear.. for only a second.

I took my car in for that issue and was told, at this time, it is inherit to the SH-AWD models.. related to the idle stop "un" feature. I was told that the car expects to shut off each time you stop, regardless of the setting.. in other words, Acura doesn't have a fix for it yet but it has to do with the Idle Stop

The certainly does nothing happens while the brake is depressed such as described by the OP. I was in stop/roll traffic for 2 hours yesterday, Idle Stop disabled and never had an issue when I stopped

I am still amazed that you bought the TLX after the rant/rave when you pre-ordered it and since you've taken possession, a litany of issues... just an observation is all.

Sorry to hear about your new problem. I hope it's just the TLX relearning idle after losing electrical power. When stopped, is the engine rpm jumping around when the car is surging?

Hummm...to bad I have something else already on order as it would have been a tempting offer *smile* Actually, the fact it is not white and already driven in the snow would have been a deal breaker

^^ The ILX is not what I had on order although if I felt confident that it would be plague with the same DCT issue the TLX is experiencing, I'd seriously consider getting one. I love the samller size of the ILX and I feel that it would be a blast to drive but I have to admit that my confidence in Acura has been shaken lately.

I am aware Acura is working hard to resolve their issues but some of the problems I see with teh TLX, MDX, RLX and the unresolved suspension noise in the RDX and ILX has made me question Acura's commitment to quality.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that Acura is not a reliable vehicle, I know it is still a VERY good brand but it appears as if initial quality is suffering lately. I could be paranoid or over sensitive to internet stuff but I can't help but feel somewhat cautious.

After not having my TL since last fall, I am even questioning on whether I even need my own toy....Maybe I am just starting to lose my passion about cars and finding the justification for paying 500-700$ a month for a car just to drive around on a nice sunny day seems less and less appealing.

I will still wait until early April o make my decision...

I think this is exactly how I feel. I like the TLX a lot but I am also worried about transmission issues with first year. I am sure that they will work it out and it already looks like some of the updates are yielding positive results. I am interested in the ILX since I don't really need tons of space and the thought of the i4 and DCT in the smaller ILX could be lots of fun. My 07 TL has been great and the payments were long done. Think that I will just wait and see as long as possible.

It remains an oddity that some people experience no transmission issues. I have driven 3 TLX 4/cyl models and all were the same. No real issues. I'd still prefer a manual though.

My car just started doing this today. When I started it this morning it behaved strangely, revs shot up to 3k and then bounced up and down twice before settling at the normal 1600ish. Now when I drive downshifts are very hard and I can definitely feel the jumping sensation when slowing to a stop. (V6 P-AWS)

Took my v6 awd in for an oil change they did the transmission software update for the jerkey 1-4 shift and as soon as i left the dealer it was jerking when i stopped. I noticed the revs where going up and down and idling higher than usual took it right back and they had to reset thw revs back to normal apparently the tranny update messes up the revs and they have to do an idle relearn. Now thw car is butter smooth

I had this update done today... and was very happy that the acceleration jerkiness was almost nonexistent... but then I started experiencing the exact same issues as you describe above. I will call my dealership to inquire about the idle relearn. thanks

So glad I found this thread. I have a new 2016 ILX (same 2.4 engine as the 4cyl. TLX), and this happens more often than I'd like. First time I thought I'd been hit from behind - it was that hard. Also noticing the same slowness in shifting from reverse to drive. Guess I'll monitor this thread for any software updates...

^^ Thanks for reporting the ILX problem too. I was curious if the ILX with the 8 DCT would have the same issues as the TLX and you have now confirmed it.

Good news... my stopping jerkiness started to smooth out yesterday... as well as the revving. I still took it in this morning. They checked and determined that they had also completed the idle relearn the last time I was there and that it takes about 1-2 weeks to start smoothing out... he said it should continue to smooth out and apparently they didn't let me know this because they're still learning/getting used to these software updates.

Shaken, but not stirred

Thanks for these posts and the great information. I just got my 10th HMC car Tuesday, a TLX TEC and am beginning to get the same feelings of disappointment with the lack of smooth acceleration and shifting. I am now classifying this as an issue that will require immediate dealer remediation. I have only 250 miles, first tank fill-up tonight (28MPG) with 75/25 highway/city driving. I will only be putting Chevron 91 in this car. I have logged 1.6 million miles over 40 years behind the wheel of HMC vehicles, had my share of issues, problems and in some cases disappointments. That said, I will not buy any other nameplate for a daily driver than Acura. My Legend went 460k trouble free miles, my 07 RDX just rolled 300k. Eight years of RDX ownership, with only a $800 A/C clutch for total repairs. That said, Acura has for the last 20 or so years had a number of models suffer with transmission issues, think 1999 TL, or 1st gen MDX. The TLX is not performing as I expected, but my faith is not shaken, I know that Acura will stand by the car and make it right. They have little choice these days. US sales are down considerably since the mid 2000s, the fact they have rebranded three models, discontinued one, is testament to the will this company has mustered to regain their position in a very crowded market segment.

These new R,T,and I LX models are pretty much make this an "all in" position, and they know it. Someone at Acura is sweating this out and with proper corporate leadership, they'll make these issues a distant memory. Apple comes to mind. Remember "antenna gate" with the revamped iPhones? They took the problem by the horns and made it right, and now all the world uses their phones. I believe that if, and only if, there's a real engineering issue, beyond a software coding tune up, they'll get it done. My guess is that with all the new models using these transmissions, and their variants, they took them through an extensive QA, and the result for we consumers will be a mild inconvenience, and not much more.

I strongly suggest you to ask your dealer to apply TSB 15-021 to your vehicle, I did the upgrade on april 24. This upgrade completely solve those symptoms,I drove the car 350miles after the upgrade, so far so good.

Same problem with 2016 MDX

I have the exact same problem with MDX. Very annoying. At times I have run very close the car ahead at the stop light.

I am really hoping for a fix. I just filed a complaint at carcompliants.com as well.

Simply disabling the Engine Idle Stop should solve this problem.
I disable it on start-up and have never experienced this issue.
