LKAS problem - doesn't work for first 10-20 minutes

Haven't seen this issue posted anywhere, so thought I'd share. My LKAS does not operate at all for the first 10-20 minutes of driving. After 10-20 minutes, it will first start to operate on an intermittent basis, engaging briefly then quickly disengaging (this is, the solid white lines appear briefly, and the car controls the steering wheel). Eventually the system will operate as expected. Once you shut off the car and turn it on again, the LKAS will again not operate initially, and go through this "warm up" period before it begins working as expected.

Took the service advisor and tech out on the highway today to show them the issue. Kept a consistent 60-65 MPH, clear lines, no curves. Took about 12 minutes before the LKAS briefly engaged, then another 5 or so minutes before it started to work consistently. They were stumped and will contact Acura for guidance. Will update when I know more.

Wow! Curious as to what the resolution will be.

My LKAS has worked fine during the last 11 months of ownership. My LKAS engages immediately somewhere above 40 mph.

The owners manual mentions that if the LKAS camera (mounted behind the rear view mirror at the top of the windshield) is hot from being in the sun, it will not work until cooled down. Perhaps it takes 10-20 minutes for your interior and camera to cool down?

That's a good thought and I'm familiar with the issue of the camera operation in the heat. I work at home though and my car is always garaged, yet the LKAS will not work upon leaving the cool, shaded garage. I also experienced the same operation in the winter here in Denver.

Received call from service advisor yesterday. Understand the tech worked with Acura's tech line to diagnose. Bottom line is a new camera has been ordered, arriving Tuesday. Not sure if any other components are involved, will update after I get the car back.

The other guy who posted on this said his windshield had to be replaced to change the camera.

I read this also, and it sounded pretty drastic (or a horrible design). Looking forward to Isbuff's update to see if that is the case for his/her repair.

All this tech is worrisome, how is it gonna be in 5 years? Even on Hondas, makes you wonder if you should just get a stripped down model but then you are living in 2005. It is turning into BMW or Merc with tech bugs that could go haywire. Hopefully it is just first year bugs.

Geez, maybe I will get a used S2000 or Miata with no options and enjoy the road.

Think of this like any other electronic component (cell phone, PC, router, TV, AVR, DVD player, PVR). If it works in the first couple of weeks/months then it will most likely be obsolete before it breaks. No worries here and no plan to take out an extended service contract.

I don't believe that the windshield has to be replaced. I've had the LKAS enclosure open to route additional cabling for my dashcam. The LKAS camera mount is easily accessible.

Leasing solves the problem for me. New equipment brings new technology and a new warranty.

There is a cost to everything. Some alternatives, like leasing or extended maintenance package, are predictable. Or you can gamble, and maybe save something or get a surprise. It is good to have choices.

I had a similar but different issue, on the way to work this morning, I kept getting the "ACC HAS STOPPED" message on the MID when ever I tried to SET the ACC. However, the LKAS system worked fine. I tried to set the ACC several times and finally, after about 20 minutes, it decided to start working.

Not cool, not cool at all.

Glad it worked out. And this seems to definitely confirm the windshield doesn't have to be removed/replaced for this repair. This makes more sense.

Not only that but didn't get the sense there was much (if any) alignment work needed. I also saw that mentioned in a post somewhere about that activity being associated with a camera replacement.
