Defective headliner

The fabric on the ceiling of my TLX (apparently referred to as a headliner) near the overhead console is separating from the trim piece. I've attached a photo for reference. I'm not sure if it was like this since day one or if it has happened gradually over the past month. While the affected area is very small, it still concerns me as this is a brand new car and could worsen over time.

Today, I took it to the dealer and was told that the entire headliner piece was somehow cut too short during the manufacturing process and will have to be replaced. The material has to be ordered and so I will be bringing the car back again next week. I am not sure if this is just a random mishap with my particular unit but figured I would share so that others can keep an eye out for it as well.

I'm more than a little frustrated since this will be my third trip to the service department in the one month or so that I've owned this vehicle. As you might recall, my initial problem the missing lock confirmation beep. This was attributed to a "wire" that was never connected at the factory. I'm thinking about calling Acura's corporate office to complain as these issues (admittedly minor) are not only a major inconvenience but are also leading me to question the overall quality of this "luxury" vehicle.

Sigh!

I know it's frustrating but I see no reason to complain to corporate Acura as long as the dealer continues to resolve your issues. Good luck to you and hopefully the headliner issue will be the last of your worries for a long while.

Hate to hear/see that. Hopefully they will fix the issue with no other problems.

with all your little small problems, I'd say you got a Friday car.

hopefully, you dont run into any more "missing" items from the factory.

It's a good thing that it's just minor things. But it's a bad thing that you have to deal with trips to the dealer and waste time.

The car may have been tested with mules over thousands of miles, that helps engineer it. But there are always things to iron out of the production process that takes time. This happens on nearly any car that's just launched, whether it is a Chevy or an Audi.

An update on my defective headliner that was pulling away from front overhead console:

The replacement headliner finally arrived and was installed last week. After just a couple of days, there are now multiple visible lines as if it has not adhered properly. Frankly, it looks PITIFUL. I am attaching a photo. Would anyone else here put up with this? If it looks like this already, I can't imagine what to expect in 6 months or 6 years.

I am so frustrated and will be bringing the car back to the service department once again… going on visit #5 in just a few months. (The fourth visit was an all day affair for them to confirm the problem and tell me the part had to be ordered). By the way, I am dealing with Nalley Acura in Atlanta. Not impressed at all. These small issues add up and are almost making me regret my purchase.

Wow, really sorry to hear about this. I would definitely not put up with this, at all. Someone better make this right for you. Good luck.

Holy Wrinkles Batman, that's horrible. Did the dealer do this themselves or did it go out to a auto detail shop that specializes in this kind of stuff?

Agree with Dan, no way I'd be satisfied with this.

That is unacceptable.... Get Acura Customer Relations involved - the dealer had the chance to make it right and they did not.

Sorry to hear/see this happening. Maybe you should be talking with the service manager to explain how you are less than thrilled and how you expect not to be back again for this issue.

What a hack job! That's a brand new headliner? Looks like they had someone repair or reapply padding . I am disappointed with all the issues people are having with their 35-45K TLX'S Acura has fallen a lot in JD Powers Initial quality standards this year.
Disappointing

There is no way I would accept that.. I would call Acura customer relations and explain your disappointment with this car.. 5 service visits in over a month on a brand new car is excessive..

I hope you get it resolved to your liking.

they need to get you a new headliner board already covered.

they attempted to do a recover at the stealer......and the results shows.

tell them you want a brand new headliner. they come covered.

LINING ASSY., ROOF *NH802L* (SUNROOF) (LIGHT JEWEL GRAY)/ROOF LINING for 2015 Acura TLX

^^^^^^^^^^^^ here is an example....... i dont know your exact model and part number but they come covered.

and be clear you will not except anything less than it looking exactly like every other tlx headliner on the lot.

this also requires a call to acura CS to file a case/

Just wondering if the liner was replaced and if they did a good job with it, considering all the trim they would need to take down. i just purchased a 2015 MDX tech and noticed two spots on the liner on the day of pick up, that look like dirty finger marks. Salesman could not get the marks out and said it was a factory defect and that the liner would need to be replaced. considering the job it would take, i thought their may be more marks or scratches than what i started with. i may just live with the 2 small marks.
thanks for any feedback.

If they are finger marks then something like Mr. Clean may be able to get them out. Test in an inconspicuous area first.

An update for all interested:

They supposedly replaced (not repaired) the headliner the last time but who knows what actually took place. I took the TLX back in last Thursday and they have had it ever since. Fortunately, they gave me an RDX loaner in the meantime. Communication at this particular dealer is extremely poor as I have to call and insist on being connected to the service advisor (or service manager) to get any kind of information. They love sending to voicemail and then not calling back despite leaving a message.

This time, they had to collaborate with an Acura "engineer" to figure out how to get the new headliner in place without "folding/creasing" it as was seemingly done the first time around. They were not very clear on the process that was ultimately decided upon. Then, the work was delayed due to a "less than perfect" headliner sent to the dealership by Acura. I have been told that it will finally be ready for me to pick up tomorrow or Thursday. I told them that I will accept nothing less than perfection… no trim scuffs or scratches. They assured me that the car is wrapped in "collision tape" to help keep it protected.

I have spoken to Acura Client Relations on multiple occasions (about the headliner and my previous issues with this TLX) but have not found them to be very helpful at all. They more or less listen, take down information, and tell me to continue to be patient and work with the dealer. The same agent started checking in with me every week or so by phone but was more or less wasting my time. By the way, I did report other issues (cross traffic audible alert not working, text/e-mail incompatibility with iPhone 5S or 6) but no solutions are available.

My advice to others with headliner issues… if just a smudge or minor cosmetic issue, leave it alone! If you refer back to my original photo on this thread, my headliner was pulling away from the front overhead console trim because it was cut too short in the factory. Over the course of the following several days, it actually worsened quite a bit and there was no doubt that I had to get it addressed.

bdwpac81...Wow! I am sorry to hear about your issue with your TLX. You are doing a great job at keeping us updated on your experience and things to keep an eye open for, so we can all say a "thank you" for your effort.

Hope your issue will be resolved to a fully satisfactory level....I am glad I didn't get a first year model of the TLX and either thing will get better or they'll gradually start losing their reputation. No car is perfect and while I can understand problems associated with high tech features, headliners, transmissions and such should not be the kind of problems Acura should be serving us....they know, can and should do better!

I am glad I got the first year model as I am enjoying all the features and could not stand to hang around this site and be enviously of all those who did get one. But my TL was 10 years old and it was time for a change. No regrets.

As someone else mentioned, I think I got a "Friday car."

The headliner has finally been replaced and looks the way it should.

I'm now looking into a possible issue with the interior heating system... will post as a new thread. Sigh.

You just can't catch a break...

Well, I'm glad you're happy with the headliner..

Having worked in an assembly plant back in the day - Monday cars are no different than Friday cars.......... Doesn't matter either way so long as folks get that three day weekend.
