text message reading, help!

I have a 2015 tlx base and when I am driving the car alerts me that I have a new text message but when I hit read it says to stop the vehicle and put it in park. Then when I am able to do that it just opens the text for me to read. Why won't the car read the text to me while I am driving? What's the point of hands free if I have to stop the car and put it in park, I might as well just look at my phone. I have a brand new droid turbo with kitkat 4.4.4.

Did you turn on Text messaging (about page 291) when the first message came in?

There is an option for what to do with text messages when they come in. Set it to "auto" or "read". The thing is not in front of me know, so the spelling of these may vary but it should be obvious.

Worked for me with 4.4.2 when I paired the phone. Later updated to 4.4.4 and it still works.

Something to think about, if you set it to "Read." I did that on my car, and got some xxx rated texts while a co worker was in the car.

Interesting moment while the car read it!

Try the Voice Command settings... for some reason while I was playing around with them, it didn't read any of my texts while in "experienced" but DID when on "beginner"

There is a small icon on the bottom right when text msg comes in where it indicates press to read. You basically have 3 options

1. Read - if you turn the knob and select this the message will say park car then read.
2. Ignore - as it says it will ignore message
3. Press to read - press the knob in like a button and it will read the message aloud for you.

Took me a while to figure it out to..

Tried everything, thanks guys. Unfortunately now it doesn't even give me the option to read them. It'll just show the small little envelope thing up on the screen by where it shows my Bluetooth thing, battery life, and signal. That little envelope pops up but it doesn't even tell me I have a text anymore.

You might try deleting the car from the phone and the phone from the car, then start all over with a re-pair, and watch the phone for any messages as you do. Android has a couple messages after pairing that grant permissions for the various options.

Yes, and it's hard (if not impossible) to get them to display later. Looks like the HandsFreelink site isn't updated with the Droid Turbo but you could also try calling them to confirm your model is designed to offer the feature. Odd are that it does, but why spin your wheels if it's not going to work?

If anyone is having trouble with Android 4.4.2 RazrM, my wife's phone got unpaired accidentally, and on the re-pair we had no success getting the previously working Text reading to work. It showed the envelope in the upper screen, but nothing else. Internet research said they botched the Bluetooth stack on 4.4.2 and messaging will not work. (But it had.)

Whether or not this is "the" solution, I realized I was trying to check the settings with my key having unlocked the door (Driver 2). Turns out on Driver 1, her key, it works now. I guess it's possible some of the text/read/auto read settings are tied to the key profile. Can't confirm why, but it does now work again, and my 4.4.4 MotoX continues to work on my key.

I can listen to my texts, but when I try to send one of the standard responses it always fails. I haven't had my navi updated yet, so I'll mention this when I bring the car in to the dealer.

Thanks for confirming you got my text...I was wondering if you got it *lol*

In all seriousness, that is the draw back of having the car read your text...what happens if you get a confidential text while in the company of people you don't want them to hear. 2012wagon gave an extreme case but I am sure something that many of us have given some thoughts.

Look at who sent it before asking it to read it out loud?
