Auto day or night display for NAVI?

I read in the manual that the navi display is supposed to switch automatically between day and night display modes, but on my car it never does, and stays in day mode even when headlights are on.

Is there a setting that I can switch or is my system malfunctioning? The day display is far too bright and distracting at night.

Thanks.

Check if your dash illumination is set to full brightness, at full it overrides the automatic switch to night mode when the headlights are on.

Yes, I checked that and it's not set to maximum, but the auto switch still didn't engage.

That's weird; the only other causes that I can think of would be if the sunlight sensor is malfunctioning, or if somehow the night time map color got changed to look like the day time map.

Investigate these settings as well (ref to Navigation Manual):

1. ,System, System Settings, Sync Display Brightness, p26
2. System, Navi Setting, Map, Color (Night) and make sure it is not set to white, p73

You didn't mention if the display settings for the Navi were set to switch automatically. Are they?

On my car, my preference is to use the night settings during the day as well, so I set it to the night display, and disabled the auto switching

Thanks for everyone's feedback but I still can't get it to work. It was a rainy day today. My headlights turned on automatically from the low light. I was expecting that Night display would be applied to the Navi but it wasn't.

Here's what I've looked at:

Display synchronization is set to OFF
Dashboard brightness is set to mid-level
Day NAVI display is set to BEIGE
Night NAVI display is set to BLUE
Headlight is set to AUTO position

Based on these settings, should the dark display not engage when headlights are turned on? My display is still BEIGE even with lights on.

Where do I check that the Navi display is set to auto? I can't seem to find that setting in the manual or screens?

I would have guessed you want Display synchronization on. ("Sync Display Brightness: Selects whether the display brightness synchronizes with the instrument panel brightness.")

Not sure this applies but on my '12 TL, the NAVI display nighttime setting is independent of the headlights coming on. I have my auto headlights set to the most sensitive setting and they will come on around dusk, however the NAVI screen stays set to bright until it gets much darker outside.

Okay, I think I've resolved my issue. There are independent dashboard illumination settings for day and night. At night, I had to move the dashboard illumination back to the middle position and then the Navi display switched to dark automatically.

It's a learning process. There is a lot of tech on this car.

Part of the fun with a new car like this is playing with all the tech, but I'll chalk this one up to not reading the manual carefully enough. The way it's described with the various priorities and overrides is slightly confusing. Plus, they did not include the info about the instrument panel illumination independence in the Navigation User Guide, it's only referred to in the Owner's Manual.
