Transmission is being replaced

After application of the software update profiled in TSB 15-040 failed to correct the 2nd/3rd rough shift in my 2015 TLX, Acura has authorized the dealer to replace the transmission. The production date of my TLX is March 2015. They are hoping a later production ZF transmission will exorcise this particular demon. I assume I'll be getting a transmission currently being installed in 2016 models. My appointment is for this Thursday, 12/17. Acura has told me to allow two days for the replacement.

Do you know the last 5 of your vin? My TLX was also a March 2015 build and has the 2-3 rough shift. Mine is very minor, just wondering if it has a connection to vin. Mine ends in 15490

What was the process you went through to get this approved? How hard did you have to push Acura on the transmission issue?

Thanks!

Not sure if they're close enough to have any correlation. It's not a big enough problem for me yet, but if it gets worse I'm curious as to what the solution would be.

Kind of a round-a-bout way actually. I first contacted Acura Customer Care about an Acuralink issue. They had a regional rep contact me about that particular case, and I gave her an "Oh, by the way. I'm also experiencing the 2nd to 3rd rough shift in the transmission that is being widely reported on the 'net." I referenced the TSB and that the dealer had performed the update with no noticeable difference in the shifting. She contacted the dealer and spoke directly with the service manager. Between the two of them, they decided to offer me the option of replacing the transmission. She also made note that I'm a loyal Honda/Acura customer. Whether or not that had any bearing on their decision, I don't know.

As a matter of fact, I am leasing the TLX, but I have no idea if that made any difference or not.

LOL. I can't tell you how many people are about to be so jealous that all you had to do was mention the 2-3 shift in a nonchalant way and they replaced your transmission.

I had mine replaced in October, but it took 8 visits to the dealer and a lawsuit to get them to replace it.

Ask stew if he had any tranny issue and he will tell you no.

What do you mean one off case? My transmission was replaced by Acura in October also (due to shift quality and being an early build.)

Sorry, maybe i should have read the whole thread, but I meant transmission issues already starting to happen on the TLX... i hope it will not become a common thing as it did with 2G and 3Gs

My TLX has been with Acura since 12/12/15 , wont get it back until around New Year's.. I have complained about the tranny, they flew someone in from corporate to drive my car and agreed to replace my tranny. Hoping it will be much better. The TLX loaner has little to no hard shifts.. wth...

I had mine replaced and the new one shifts much better. Unfortunately, it took them more than a month to do the job, and now I have an annoying "pop" or "clunk" coming from the front driver's side... Something from the suspension. I took the car back and they replaced the passenger side strut - noise still there of course but since it doesn't happen all the time the dealer says they're unable to duplicate it. This is disappointing.

By the way, after replacing one of the struts, isn't an alignment necessary?

These are a different type of issues. It's a rough shift, not a transmission failure. They also had a recall with it going into park. The 2016's appear to be fine.

I was a 3G owner, and that was a physical failure of the clutch packs.

Most TLX complaints seem to be more related to software calibration.. In these couple of cases, maybe there was more to it than just a software issue.

A/Ts are the weak points in all vehicles, and a few replacements here andithere happen across all brands. Unlike with the 3G, I am not even remotely worried about a transmission failure on my TLX which is a 13mth old Advance AWD model which is shifting just fine.

no low speed hesitations it just moves at any range and moves good, i called the dealer and let them have it. they said they are pushing for a tranny change and waiting on approval. this loaner vehicle drives amazing.

i just think some units are faulty and the software that runs them. can't think of anything else.

Build date may be important. Mine is a 7/14 and the 2-3 shift is a little hard but really a minor problem.

Ideally you shouldn't be able to feel the shift at all. The 2016's (including mine) do not have the issue whatsoever, not even a small amount. You would be justified in putting some pressure on Acura about it.

Just got the software update still feel like when I am slowing down I feel alittle bit of a jerk dunno if this is common. The shifts from P to D is smoother and my wife can't tell since its her car but I notice a little bit of a difference still feels jerky just not as much should I call the dealer my build was from 8/14?

Would make no difference. It would be in Acura's best interest to do warranty work on a leased car because it is their car. They own it. You are just renting it.

I own a 2g and 3g acura tl, Those years especially the 2nd gen tl was full of owners that had transmission failures. Fast forward to 2015 i thought acura completely fixed all the transmission problems...Darn shame

Transmission failure is a far cry from shifting that is sometimes (for some people) a little rough. And Acura has done some fixing. They certainly fixed mine with the software update. But even when the shifting was abrupt it was nothing like what happened when I was driving my 2g TL down the freeway and the dash lights all light up like a Christmas tree and the transmission would not shift at all.

^^ I agree....These transmission issues (with the exception of a few units) are more about something that is "less than refined" than a catastrophic failure.

Update from OP

I got my TLX back on Monday 12/21 with a new transmission. After driving it around town in stop and go traffic, I'm happy to report that the car is now shifting like it should. Apparently, the original transmission was indeed a lemon. I'm very happy now.

Its funny how many buyers have the exact same issues, but Acura won't admit those are lemons. We are lucky to have had ours replaced. I am still hoping Acura fixes the rest in January. I keep hearing about a big recall in January..

Even though my late build transmission has pretty much settled down now (still a bit rough at low speed, but MUCH better after the software update and idle relearn), I wouldn't mind a blanket campaign for all of us to get new transmissions.
