A kid driving his bosses' van ran through a stop sign at about 60MPH (in a 25MPH zone!) and totaled my car. The head curtain airbags deployed and saved my life. I smelled smoke and thought the car was going to explode, but that was just from the airbags being deployed.
He hit the passenger side, and I suspect he must have been texting based on the way the car was hit. He never applied his brakes. The force of the impact pushed me into a parked Lexus SUV, and crushed the driver's side of my car.
I was able to walk away and didn't even go to the ER, but I'm pretty sore and I know it will be worse tomorrow.
People were rushing out of their houses and cars were stopping to assist me. Don't believe what you read about New Yorkers, I can't tell you how nice people were to me today.
My car is in the shop and I'm waiting to hear if they're going to try to repair it or salvage it. They'd better not try to fix it, with the damage it sustained it will never be the same. Only the driver's door opens, and the trunk is smashed in. The electronics went haywire too, the dash lit up like a Christmas tree and bells and whistles were going off. Some guys offered to push it out of the middle of the street, but I couldn't even put the car in neutral.
Here are pics of the damage to each side. It's amazing how good the rest of the car looks. Acura did a good job, this car kept me safe and alive!
Van hit passenger's side first.
Impact threw me into a parked Lexus SUV and crushed driver's side.
Wow. I'm happy to see that you walked away from this. From what I've seen with the 3G, 4G and now the TLX- Acura does not disappoint in the safety department. Don't take your pain or soreness for granted. Get checked out.
Hey man good to hear that your not seriously injured.
And yes tomorrow you will feel some aches and bruises I'm sure. Acura did a very Fine job with the safety of the vehicle and the car is certainly a top pick in the segment.
Regarding the fix versus salvage...it will be interesting to find out what they decide to do... Since this is a brand new car, likely worth $40K (I have an old 2003 TL, so I really don't know what this car's bluebook is to be honest)... They can do a lot of fixing before they reach the point of salvaging it...
I know it wouldn't take much for my $7,000 TL to get salvaged...
Don't take your pain or soreness for granted. Get checked out.
first day is usually nothing due to shock and adrenaline, but the second day it will probably hit you like a bag of bricks. Pleas go get checked out. That's what insurance is for.
Omg, glad that you are ok! I can almost guarantee that that's totaled with that much damage on both sides, most airbags deployed and more than likely bad frame damage.
Sorry to see the damage to your new car. Also, glad you were able to walk away. Acura's Ace Body Structure looks like it works. Like others have said, it's a good idea to have your doctor check you out.
So sorry Narnia. Glad you're fine. I'm so sick of seeing people texting and driving. I see it constantly. In fact, my brother was sitting at a stoplight today in his Honda Civic and a 20 year old girl who was texting ran into the back of him going about 25 mph. No one was hurt but both cars were moderately damaged.....nothing like yours but when will people learn?? Again, sorry about your TLX. I know you loved that car but am thankful you're okay.
Thanks for your concern guys. As it happened there was an EMT tech passing by who saw the accident and stopped to check me out. Then when the police came they brought EMT with them and they checked my vital signs too. I'm just banged up and bruised, nothing a doctor can really do for that. And I didn't want to sit in the ER for hours, I just wanted to go home asap.
Just to show you how neurotic I am about my car, as I was waiting for the police to come I was watching traffic trying to squeeze by my car and worried they might scratch it, LOL!

Any decision on which car to get next?
I had 30,000 miles in just over 9 months! But I've cut way back on my driving now, I'll only do about 15K a year from now on.
I'm definitely getting the same car. I really hope they don't decide to repair this one, I want a new one even though I'll have to pay $$$ out of pocket due to depreciation.
First off, I'll just echo everyone's thoughts about how glad I am that you're OK. As they say, any crash you can walk away from is a good one and part of the reason I bought my TLX was because of the excellent safety features.
If at all possible, since it was the other driver's fault, I'd be very vocal about having your car replaced and there shouldn't be any out of pocket to you since you were not in the wrong. I have had a few cars totaled in the past and you may want to look into buying the car back from insurance if you can. I was able to buy 2 cars back and salvage parts that more than made up for what I paid (Wheels, interior components, engine components, electronics,....) You may not have the buy back option, but it's something to consider.
Again, I'm glad you're alright and hope everything goes hassle free since we all know how fun it is to deal with insurance companies.
P.S. did you get to see the reaction of the Lexus owner when he saw the damage to his vehicle? He was probably more upset than you seem to be.
Narnia, glad you were not hurt and amazed to see how well the TLX protected its occupant. A real selling point for this car.
I'd seek diminished value claim against the company van.
The car may not be totaled. The repair costs don't need to equal the remaining value, usually only some percentage (maybe 70%). Unless the engine is damaged it may not be totaled. The frame can be straighten, doors replaced, repainted, etc. I'd be like you, I'd want it totaled too. Hopefully you have some good insurance. The insurance company could go after the van company for damages due to their employee negligence.

So glad you walked away from this event.
I hope it is totaled!
I was offered that additional rider on my policy that if it is totaled, I would get a brand new vehicle of the current model year. Now I'm rethinking I should get it!
I sure hope the van driver was ticketed.
Glad you're ok. I will reiterate what others have said about your injuries, go to the doctor and get it documented. You may think i'm fine and it's just bumps and bruises, but get looked over even though the doctors can only really give you meds to help with pain. Go to physical therapy and get this taken care of. Send the bill to the idiot van driver. These types of impacts can have long lasting effects on people physically (ie chronic pain, etc.).
While I have no doubts the guy that hit you could have been texting and speeding, there's no way you were t-boned at 60mph. 40, maybe. 60, I'd expect the front end of that van obliterated and significant more damage to your car. Still, a traumatic experience, I'm sure. And the fact no one was hurt is even better.
Glad you are okay. You should get yourself checked out now because if anything does come up in the future, you won't be able to rely on the accident as being the cause. Don't end up screwing yourself in the long run, you know? Especially if insurance will cover the costs anyway.
Sorry to hear about this. Glad you're ok. Might want to get double check after a few days. Spine injury isn't always instant. Another reason why safety is another factor in getting a car cause of all these dumb drivers on the road.
Also, if your car is leased (which is probably not since you have 30K miles on it)...Acura lease comes with automatic GAP. I've only learned that after the fact of leasing the car heh.
Thankful you are OK! But recommend you see a doctor in any event just to get checked out. I feel your pain, hope they total it but have my suspicions they may not.
this is such a crazy story, two in a VERY short time is insanity. But crashes occur, folks are crazy on the road. Glad to know you were safe as well! I'd highly advise getting a dr. to clear you even if you are sure you are just sore. A lot of issues can arise later on. I feel more comfortable having taken my wife to the ER. Especially after our consult today with the other drivers insurance company. They are taking care of us 100% (with the exception of the total value which is being disputed as we speak!) But they are working with us on that.
My wife is adamant we return to the same TLX once she felt how safe she was in her accident. Glad to know you were safe also!
Glad your ok and walked away !
That car is totaled for sure. Frame damage on passenger side is not worth fixing... Airbags alone in the whole car will cost them a lot.
Any other color in mind for the next one ?
Narnia...I am so sorry to hear about your accident but as with the others, I am SOOOO happy you are OK. I was away on a business trip and just got back today otherwise I would have posted sooner.
I am confident that in the end, all will work itself out and that you will be in a new TLX (white this time?? ) in no time.
I swear that if I ever survive an accident where someone hits me while they are texting, I will grab it and shove it up their rectum and NOT turn on the vibrate mode....
