Spied on the Street! 2018 Acura TLX (MMC)

Three Wheelin'
1. Not everyone has a second, fast vehicle. They have one vehicle that they likely want to be able to multi-task. In today's day and age, 290hp isn't winning anything, by a long shot. Especially when Accords and Camry's are in the realm of 270-280hp and those cars don't come at a premium price.
2. While 290hp isn't bad, I keep hearing that the car is still slower than the 3G TL-S. That's not exactly stellar.
3. While 290hp is plenty for many, some just want something a bit more powerful for their daily vehicle. Not sure why you'd say it's for showing off or bragging rights. Even 350hp isn't anything worth bragging about these days.
4. Why did you buy a 550hp vehicle, if power and speed aren't a priority, and you'd be happy with half the power?I don't buy your argument at all.
5. I'm guessing you haven't been following the reality of where Acura sits these days, in terms of reliability. They are NOT what they used to be. By a long shot.
6. Acura has got themselves in the pickle they're in now, by not listening to want consumers want, but rather telling them what they should want. There have been many people scorned by the brand. If that's what it means to be different, then so be it. But pushing people away generally isn't a very good business plan and eventually catches up to you. Granted, you can't please everyone, nor should Acura even try to please everyone. But offering a sport model just opens the brand up to more potential buyers. I can't imagine that's a bad thing.
By the end of the day, 290hp is good for a base model TLX. But there are enough people who want more and are willing to pay more for it. I don't think the TLX should come standard with 350hp. That would be ludicrous. But having a sport option to allow people to have 350-400hp seems reasonable. It's still not a rocket ship, but at least gives people the opportunity to have a very practical vehicle with sporting abilities.

My current car is a 2016 A7 with 333hp, and runs like it has closer to 400. I don't want to live with less until, as you say, I have a faster weekend car (my last was a 505 hp Z06).
I want a TLX with A Spec and a bit more horsepower because I'm close to retirement and would like to save a little money and have Japanese reliability and resale value. But so far, I still don't feel the passion for the TLX.

I agree with you. I'm 64 years old and still a serious speed junkie. I hate when people tell us we have plenty of horsepower and don't need any more. I have three motorcycles - fast bikes. I ride country roads every weekend. Out where nobody else is around I regularly see stupid speeds. I'm glad there aren't very many others like me, but there are some.

Last of the dinosaurs I guess, I find it hard to envision a world where all the risk & adventure has been rung out of it by the safety Nazis. Running a "need for speed" video game is not the same as real life.

I wanted a muscle car that could haul stuff and a baby seat...
now that I've experienced it...I think I'd be fine with something a little more tempered in terms of power and more gadgets and better mpg for real world day to day. Burnouts are cool and lighting people up real easy too...but...
Then again, I'd guess the grass is greener but I also think you'd have to have had the power to be qualified to make the comparison.

Saintor, you came from a 3 series. You can't compare whatsoever to an A7/S7
Just because they potentially share the same badge in the front, doesn't make them even remotely similar. Thanks, but try again.

If they made the TLX aspec a Sport Hybrid like the RLX, NSX, MDX I would then totally like the car. But right now it's just really good looking without the performance to back it up.

It's slower than a 10 year older 3G TL-S... Performs okay... I guess.

Reading comprehension fail? It's slower than a ten year old TL-S. So in ten years, they haven't moved an inch in performance.

Yes, crank horsepower is 4hp higher. What gets to the ground isn't higher. Unless you don't believe the 0-60 times that get published? I think it comes down to the transmission. It could be just because the tranny shifts 3-4 gears more than the 6mt, or 5at.

I wasnt referring to 0-60 racing, as that's not real world. I dont know ANY one in day to day traffic lining up with another. (if one does line up, for lets say a merge...the slower car always lets the faster car go ahead.)
on the freeway, it's a different story. 290hp is enough to get in trouble in traffic. it's easy to head north of 80mph on accident.

my entire point was this...
I have a ton more power and in 95% of my time in the driver seat it does absolutely nothing for me from a practicality standpoint.
Jack of all trades is better than master of power for having one daily driver.
IMO.

The thread still has traffic - traffic pays the bills why shut it down. If people are not interested they should not view it.

0-60mph in the 5's and 1/4 mile trap speed at over 100mph is more than enough. I don't think it's behind many, if any, $40k new cars in this segment in terms of acceleration. For the same amount of money, we are looking at:
IS350 - just as fast, but that's the base trim
330i - just as fast, but base trim with an option or 2
ATS 3.6 - just as fast, but a couple thousand dollars more
C300 - slower and still base model
A4 2.0T - just as fast, but base trim with an option or 2
Once we get into the 340i, C43, S4, then we are looking at $50k +.
The problem with the TLX is that, like the IS and ATS, it lacks a model that competes with the 340i, C43, S4, and now, Q50 Red Sport. The sport hybrid could've solved that problem, but too bad it didn't get made.
