Question to V6 owners

I'm curious how many of the V6 owners actually push the "park" button when turning the car off or opening the car door vs just opening the car door or turning the car off and having the car put it self back into park.

I never put the car back into park when opening the door or turning the car off and I'm starting to wonder if I should expect some long term issue with doing that. It has already become a habit now, I have opened other car doors and left the shifter in drive a couple times and had to quickly step on the brakes to stop the car from rolling and I constantly turn other cars off with the shifter still in drive and can't figure out why its screaming at me and not letting me take the key out.....

I always put it in PARK before exiting the car. And if I'm parked on a slight inclined area or hill i always use the E Brake after i press P. Just my preferences.

I put my car in P 99.9% of the time. I do think it is really cool that it switches to P if the door is opened though.. I will show that feature to friends though

I've actually done that once before; turning the car off without putting it on park. My guess is that it doesn't matter only because shifter is computer/electronic driven. It seems smart enough to put it in park before shutting off the car. I could be wrong.

I'm curious if it does affect 'wear' on the gears, if any.

From the time of the parking brake recall I have gotten into the habit of using the parking brake when starting or stopping and I always use the park button. Although these presses are not necessary and really take no time, I think they are a good habits that carry over to driving a car that does not have them.

Nore, it seems that you and I are the only ones who regularly just shut the car off and not bother pressing the Park button. I rarely ever park on any kind of slope, but I was under the impression that when the car is shut off it automatically shifts into park. This has to be one of my favorite features of the pushbutton shifter, and I hate the effort that I now have to use in "traditional" shifting vehicles.

If anyone knows for sure if we should put it in Park before shutting, please speak up and I'll try to change my habits.

That would involve "reading instructions" and that goes against the grain of my male genetics

I suppose I should take a look at the manual, but I prefer to just turn off the car and let it shift to park

It automatically goes into park. Pushing the park button just restarts the engine from auto stop, so turning off the engine is actually the best practice for getting into park

I do always use the electric parking brake, though.

I do not shift to park anymore. I also just rented a car for work and yeah it throws you off after you get in that habit for sure.

If you use the "Brake Hold" feature while driving, then if you turn the car off when stopped, it automatically goes into Park AND the electronic parking brake is automatically engaged, too.
Really cool!!

I always put it in park. I also pull the park brake as an added benefit so that the car doesn't move forward.

Well, I read the manual and on page 333 it states the following:

■ When turning off the power mode
If you turn the engine off while the vehicle is stationary, and the transmission is in other than (P), the gear position automatically changes to (P).

I suppose the best way is to select P and engage the Parking brake, but Acura does acknowledge that if the ignition is shut off it will engage P.

I put the e-brake on then turn the car off. Never really push "park" unless I am steeping out to get the mail or something. I'm not used to opening the door and it going into park. Cool feature though!

I always use Brakehold, and almost never put the car in Park before I turn it off. Generally, the parking break is automatically applied, and if not, I always put it on.
Works like a charm to date.

I always push the Park button before I switch off the ignition. I started doing so in order to avoid that "jello" effect when the car comes to a complete stop. Now I just do it as a habit... and no more "jello" effect either :-)

I'll have to try this out later.
Too bad that "Brake Hold" is not persistent through engine stop/starts.

Same here. Just turn the car off. It's designed to do this so there won't be any ill effects.

Another one of those well thought out engineered solutions that Acura is known for.

I just turn it off - it goes into Park all by itself.

I might inadvertently do the same with other cars, but I doubt it - that gearshift knob sticking up there will remind me.
