Long Term Edmunds Review Thread

Edmunds added a TLX V6 SHAWD Advance to its long term fleet. Super excited as they go into a great deal of detail others won't

2015 Acura TLX SH-AWD Long-Term Road Test - Introduction
Shame they didn't go with a DCT model - I would be more interested in their long term experience with it. Nonetheless I will be reading along as well.

It's all in the angle and lighting.

Thanks for posting. It's always interesting to see what these mags say they think they said a few years earlier. To quote from the article, "But then subsequent generations slowly got bigger, less interesting to drive and a bit odd-looking." I'm not interested enough to look it up, and someone can do so and prove me wrong, but I have the recollection that Edmunds raved about the driving characteristics of the 4G AWD (maybe the MT version). This is not the first time I've seen such revisionist journalism in car mags, and it's not isolated to Edmunds, which generally does a pretty fair job reviewing cars.

This brings up the question "can a magazine have multiple opinions?" I'm guessing "yes". What happens when a writer leaves a magazine and another comes in and has a differing view? Or are they forced to all have the same opinion? Who knows, but here's a full review on Edmunds from the 2009 TL. They do say their opinion of the 2009 depends on the trim : Used 2009 Acura TL Sedan Review | Edmunds.com

^^ Thanks. This is the part I remembered from the 4G test:

"The SH-AWD is a different story, as the "Super Handling" part of its acronym proves to be more than just hyperbole. By apportioning more power to the outside wheels during cornering (it's the same principle that makes a tank turn), the TL exhibits excellent grip and control. The SH-AWD TL's electric steering also exhibits more weighting and feedback, resulting in a more natural feel."

Rough Start-Stop System - 2015 Acura TLX SH-AWD Long-Term Road Test

Interesting addition. One of the senior editors over there drives a base 4cyl TLX.

I'm sure the idle stop will take a little time to get used to. It seems that starting the engine at a stop-light should be no rougher than starting the engine in the garage at the beginning of a trip.

I think Hybrid cars mask this 'roughness' because they have an electric motor doing the initial movement while the engine starts- the movement masks the engine starting and you don't have to wait for the engine to start to actually move the car.

At least there are a couple ways to defeat the system and not mashing the brake pedal seems like one I could get used to pretty quickly. I think idle-stop is still a good feature for the masses that are parked at long stop lights, train crossings, etc. This feature also beats the poor man's alternative which is using a key/button to manually stop/start the car- much easier.

I'm not a huge fan of the start/stop system either, but it's here to stay. At long stops it will reactivate itself due to a time out delay. What I usually do is twist the steering wheel slightly side to side as I see the light is getting ready to change. This will start the system just prior to a green light and I can roll away as I would normally. When you wait till you're ready to move, that's when the system is at it's worst because it has to engage and then shift into gear.

My car has an issue with the Idle Stop in that even when I disable it, the transmission seems to think it is still engaged. With Idle Stop off, when I come to a stop, I have to wait a few seconds at stop or the car seems to be in a high gear, when I give it gas the transmission seems to slip then catch. Very similar to when the idle stop is active, it shuts off and then you try to take off too soon before the car has restarted... I probably haven't explained it well but I've given the dealership and Acura Client Relations hell over it because there is no fix for it.

I have just tried to expect it and not get pissed but I still get aggravated

Stew, I came to peace with mine that it is not perfect, and I have learned to live with it. I just dont have the time to wate it at the dealerships and on the phone. But I must admit, that auto idle thing would have really ticked me off. I test drove it and given what I had read it here, decided against AWD.
I wanted to wait and had hesitation with first year release model but then again I had 09 TL had gotten it used and had ZERO problems with it. I really Miss my TL.

I am doing my best to be patient on this but I can't say I have a lot of confidence that they will even try to find a fix for this since no one else seems to have this same issue. The dealership acknowledges the issue and said that they saw the same issue on the other SH-AWD they test drove the same day I was in.

I was an early adopter and had not seen any threads about the Idle Stop system. I expected SH-AWD to operate like the 4G SH-AWD I had.. well, I guess the actual driving parts are similar

My "ACC off" (once every 3-4 days) happens pretty frequently but I think Its because i tend to use it everyday. I think a lot of people on Advance package have the problem and just dont know about it. I have 100 mile commute round trip each day and ACC was one of the reasons I bought the TLX Advance.

But I will tell you, when it works its great.

I haven't used ACC yet since I haven't encountered much traffic. My round trip is 16 miles and is suburban, luckily. I have 1800 miles on the car in 4 months time.

That new car smell is still very strong

The start-stop system on the RLX Sport Hybrid is pretty seamless for the reason stated above. I've been in other cars with idle stop and the RLX's is the most refined of the bunch. Hopefully a TLX-S Hybrid will fix this issue for you guys, if it comes.
