CarPlay for 2017 Acura tlx
Except for the Siri Eyes Free pilot on the 2013 RDX Tech, I don't ever remember major infotainment features being added within or retroactively to a model year through an upgrade package.
The Accord managed to add the feature in the '16 MMC, maybe we can cross our fingers it will show up on the TLX MMC.

I highly doubt Honda/Acura will provide an update to give older models CarPlay capabilities. I know people who have pre-MMC 9th gen Accord's and they've inquired with Honda about the possibility of getting a software update to no avail. It might be that the hardware in these cars aren't compatible with CarPlay (Honda/Acura are a bit behind tech-wise vs other manufacturers). Or, Honda/Acura doesn't care about you and they'd rather sell you a new car if you want CarPlay.
If the system is compatible with CarPlay, Honda/Acura should do what Hyundai and Kia have done.... provide downloadable updates.

Hyundai Releases Software Update to Expand CarPlay Support to Additional Vehicles
May 24, 2016
Hyundai is releasing a software update that brings CarPlay support to eight new vehicles, including the 2016 Elantra GT, 2015 and 2016 non-hybrid Sonata, 2017 Santa Fe Sport, 2017 Santa Fe, 2015 and 2016 Genesis Sedan, and the 2016 Tucson.
The vehicles gaining CarPlay support through a software update join Hyundai's previously announced CarPlay models, the 2016 Sonata, 2017 Elantra, and the 2017 IONIQ. Hyundai has not officially announced the news, but dealers were sent a notice about the update on May 19. Dealer information suggests the update is supposed to be available as of today, May 24.
Hyundai owners with an eligible vehicle can download the CarPlay update through the Hyundai website and are encouraged to go through the installation process themselves. A Mac or PC with an SD card slot or an external SD card reader is required to download the software and transfer the update to the vehicle's in-dash system. Software download times range from 25 minutes for Display Audio to more than three hours for Navigation if a map update is required.

No, it was supposed to be ready in Dec 2016 but it still is not available. When I found out that Android Auto did not support Waze, I no longer required Android Auto in my next vehicle. When I test drove the Civic last month, I wasn't super impressed with AA, anyway. It's cool but not quite a phone screen replicator, which is what many have the impression of. AA is limited to certain apps.

Overall, the biggest benefit of either of these systems is the frequent updates from Apple/Google. Maps get updated with the OS and over the air, so you really don't have to worry about the semiannual DVD installation. Plus, it allowed me to skip the Nav package on my A4. So while it's not the best, the alternatives just don't come close.
