ALMOST bought a TLX SH-AWD Advance....am I negotiating too much?
Hey guys! I have been playing hard ball with my 2 local dealers, both less than 10 miles from my house, both have the identical car I want. 2015 TLX SH-AWD Advance Graphite Grey with Ebony interior.
I have been negotiating back and forth talking each one down, and had negotiated the price of $43400 out the door. About to head inside at the first dealership to start signing papers when we noticed a scratch on the drivers door! Woah, did I not want to buy a NEW car with a scratch. They offered to do touch up paint or repaint the whole door. I told that I wasnt happy, and decided to negotiate a little more, and told them I would still take the car for $43,400 after its been touched up (assuming it looked good) if they threw in a spare tire kit AND spoiler. They said NO! They said they would do one OR the other. I said there is NO way I am paying $40,000+ and not getting a spare tire, and think that should be thrown in, and the spoiler should be compensation for the door damage. Anyways, am I asking too much? I ended up walking and went to the other dealer who agreed to the $43,400 out the door but no tire and no spoiler. ADVICE PLEASE!!! Am I asking too much? they touched up the car yesterday and I went to see it and I see no sign of damage. So which one do I get? I can go to dealership A and get a free spoiler or spare tire and no my door was retouched up, or dealership B who will not include a tire nor spoiler. Also, hows my price compared to what others payed? Thanks

You are definitely a hard ball.
Good thing I'm not your salesman lol
Ask the dealership to throw in a spoiler, plus if they aren't willing to budget, call up a dealership that not as close, see if they will go lower or throw in spoiler, if so buy it from that dealership.
Dealership can trade cars, so get them to trade the TLX from Dealership B to w.e dealership you buy it from.
just my 0.02... I answer lots of sales call like this lol
hope it helps

We have no idea what the damage looks like. How are we supposed to tell you what to do if we can't assess the damage. To me it sounds like the scratch could likely be repaired easily, maybe even polished out. You don't generally see severe damage on a showroom floor. If they are throwing a spoiler or tire in, consider yourself lucky. Car dealerships don't make a whole lot on new car sales. Used cars (and service/parts) is where their bread and butter is at.
What exactly was done with the car with the door scratch to fix it? Often if it's a minor scratch, it can be polished/waxed out and not need to be painted or touched up.
If the car did not have the door painted or have the scratch covered up with touch up paint, I'd go with that one and get the spolier probably. A spoiler plus installation costs more than a spare tire. Just purchase the spare tire separately if you still want it.
Or, talk to the other dealership and tell them you found the car at another dealership for that price and they are throwing in a spoiler and spare tire. But you will purchase from them if they can match that deal

Go with Dealer A and the spare tire as you indicated that you must have a spare. If the minor scratch has been fixed then everything is fine.
Read some other threads about some fit challenges with the spoiler. They might change your mind about wanting one.

I take it that the scratch must be pretty bad if they are offering to repaint the door. I don't understand is how they are willing to repaint the door but not willing to give you a spare tire and a spoiler. The labor and material to repaint a door ain't cheap. To me I would avoid that dealership sounds like they are pretty stubborn.

I concur with Quandry. The scratch has been repaired. The car is fine. Get the spare tire. Enjoy your new TLX!
really? it should be a no brainer, get the unmolested car. that door damage could hurt you down the road on resale value big time if they repainted the door.
I would say it depends on how anal you are about your car....If you are one that keeps it pristine and babies it, then take the virgin one. If you treat your car like many and will likely have dings or scratches anyway, get the deal that will give you the best deal (i.e. more goodies).
If it was me, and how anal I am, the virgin (car) would be my choice

I'll be the renegade.....dealer 1. If it's a minor scratch that was buffed out (you said you didn't see it), take that car and the spare tire, and roll with it. You're going to get another scratch in due time, anyway, no matter how hard you try to protect your car.
Do it today! Before you change your mind, LOL.

Look into having a skilled detailer correct your scratch. It looks 100 times better than touch up paint. If the scratch is deeper than the clear coat then it can't be corrected without paint.
Congrats on the new car!!
