Acura Starts TLX Production

Chris Woodyard, USA TODAY 9:03 a.m. EDT July 14, 2014

Acura just started production of its TLX sedan in Ohio.(Photo: Acura)

Production starts today for Acura's new TLX sedan, the model that Acura hopes will reinvigorate its car lineup.
Cars are due to begin coming off the line in Marysville, Ohio. The first should start arriving in dealerships early next month, Acura says.

Acura sales chief Mike Accavitti has huge hopes for the TLX because of its size and performance. "TLX is going to do for us in the sedan (segment) what MDX and RDX did for us in SUV business," he says. "It's going to be a sweet spot of size."

And, Acura hopes, price. The base model with a 206-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine will start at $30,995 plus $895 in delivery fees. The more upscale TLX with the 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 will go for $35,220. Both are designed to be sporty.

"This car produces an adrenaline rush like no other," Accavitti says.

Acura is trying to get the jump on orders for the car with an incentive plan. Those who place a reservation will get a certificate good for $500 in Acura accessories.

This should mean pre-production models have been driven by the car magazine folks, so we should see some "first drive" reviews soon, around the time the first TLX's reach the dealerships. I'm especially curious about the I4/8DCT drivetrain. Even though I'm an MT guy, I suspect I'll really like it.

That's right. That's my silver TLX.

It's amazing how similar the front is to the 3G TL.

The more I see it, the more I think that too. Probably a big reason I want it as my next car. The 4g didn't have much resemblance to the 3g for people who liked the 3g's look.

Maybe it's because I see that front end almost every day, but ... lol. I don't hate it, but it's too familiar to me. Hell, instead of "aggressive", it looks "cute" in that pic.

Is it just the lighting? The Slate Silver looked much darker in some photos - I know that some of us here would really love to have a pure silver but this one looks like it will be like Forged Silver - the lighting will dramatically change how it looks. Yes, Acura does need to offer this in the pure silver, in addition to these darker silver hues.

I think it's the lighting.....I am pretty sure it will be fairly light, at least I hope so for the pure silver lovers.

I ordered a slate silver w/greystone 4 cyl tech today. I debated on all of the available colors but I really like silver. My current car is a 2011 tsx silver moon w/taupe as they called it then. Of all the incoming cars to the dealership, not one of them was silver. I had to order one and it should be here in October just in time for my lease to end.

I guess even they realize that the silver looks the best on the TLX if it was the first color off their line.....or maybe they've been reading our threads.

Or more like a random color picked by their computer.

To me this Slate silver looks quite close to ASM and SSM, so it is a true light silver color.
Best choice to show the body lines!

Congrats on your order. Oct is a long time to wait. The wait was that long just for a Silver I4 Tech? I would have thought that would be one of the more popular combos.

I've had blue, red, brown, and grey cars, but never a white or silver car. I think I might go with White and Parchment this time... we'll see.

I wonder if that is destined to be a press car? Or maybe something for the museum? It seems as if our first month of production is primarily dark colors like black, gray etc.

$500 to show my commitment to purchase(lease) and to lock in the Advantage program. The deposit is fully refundable if the lease numbers don't work for me but based upon the current lease deals the numbers should work. I just hope the car arrives before 10/31. Most likely I will have to extend my current lease as it matures on 10/3.

I thought an October build date was extreme but some of the cars on the current dealer order list have an estimated build date of mid-September. I would be upset with the wait but I really enjoying driving my '11 TSX. Next week it will turn 50,000 miles.

^^ There is a 2-3 month lead time to get a car that is not already on order. Dealers only order cars once a month. If your request goes in the day before the order, you have a 2 month wait. If it goes in the day after, they wait 28 days before they can order, and then it's 2 months.

It's been like this since the late 90's and just goes to show the typical Acura client would rather have something on hand vs. ordered. This is not a criticism, but it really shows how what works for the European car brands may not work as well for Acura.

The employees look beaming with pride. Maybe because they don't have to keep making that ugly 4GTL anymore.

Hahaha, couldn't resist.

I am trying to figure out why the car doesn't look as impressive (to me at least) as it did in the prototype:

Is it the chrome additions on the front that look more prominent because of the red color plus the nice touch on the back of rearview mirrors, or the wheels, or because it looks more lowered/aggressive?

BTW, I'm not a fan of "chrome" stuff, so if I actually look at what is shown in the prototype may be I won't like it as much as I like the video.
In any case, waiting to actually get to see the car.

Every time I see the prototype I swear if they made it like that as a Type-S I would buy one just like that, that Red and those wheels, sign me up! They just need beefy brakes, and some sport seats with tighter suspension and they can sell that for $48-$50K in AWD Advance trim easily.

Has anyone heard when dealerships will be getting TLX demo models?

My father-in-law's G/F totaled her 05 TL, and would like to drive/see the new TLX.

Thx in advance.

because of no dark tint, no side skirt, no cool-rim, no blade led thing on the front.

I don't know if anyone else has heard any dates for dealer arrival lately, but my dealer told me yesterday that they are expecting their first TLXs to be there in Sept....kinda surprised since I had heard August arrival dates. The dealers have to be screaming b/c they have virtually no sedans on the lots.
