2016 Acura TLX VS 2012 TL Crash Test

I still don't get how they managed to get much better results with older TL...
Acura should be moving forward not back.

It's strange that the 2016 did worse than the 2015 in the small overlap; and why the TLX seems to have problems with this test when the rest of the Acura lineup and the Accord does well on it.

I was fully expecting the 2016 TLX to fix the only blemish on the 2015 TLX safety testing results.

Did Acura change anything or did the cars just preform differently?

By you all saying which one did "better" in the crash test videos, what are you judging it by? All I see is cars getting smashed its hard to tell which was is 'better" than the others

I see now, I think "marginal" "acceptable" and "good" are funny ways to rate the car, im suprised it doesnt say the star rating. I guess there are a lot of things to consider in a 40 mph crash like these

The IIHS website provides very in-depth reports on the vehicle tests:

The IIHS mentioned that it was upgraded to improve on the small overlap, but somehow did worse:

The Acura TLX was introduced in the 2015 model year as a replacement for the discontinued Acura TL and TSX models. Beginning with 2016 models, the front door hinge pillar was reinforced with the intent of improving occupant protection in small overlap frontal crashes.
Given how good virtually the entire Honda/Acura lineup is, it's hard to believe how they could have made it worse.

It's not going fast that kills you, it's stopping quickly.

The 2012 TL deflects off the target vs the TLX that hits it head on and continues forward. The front member design of the TL probably contributed to it "bouncing" off and continuing forward rather than hitting head on and bouncing back.

The 2016 TLX looks to transmit more energy to the seat and the head compared to the 2015 TLX. In addition, it looks like the TL absorbs the impact better by "crunching" up in a much more controlled manner than the TLX.

Well this is not good for their new advertising that says all their cars are Top Safety Pick + because now the 2016 isn't.

The 2015 was "acceptable" and the 2016 is "marginal." The TL was "good" so maybe they were trying to improve the 2015 up to "good" and went the wrong direction. The TL glances off the barrier, the TLX seems to hit and rotate around. Higher g forces this way and more penetration into the car.

Note to self... avoid small overlap crashes.

This is not that surprising, I mean the TLX is supposed to strike a balance between the TSX and the TL so it wouldn't surprise me if structurally the TL is superior. Anyone know how did the TSX did in comparison to the TLX?

Just an observation. There were less of the forward momentum left for both TLX crash tests than the TL test. The TLXes absorbed more energy in the crash than TL. Car structure, tire traction... may all attribute to the difference.

I don't know why , but to me TL felt more solid (structural) than the TLX . Also the doors felt heavier on TL than TLX .
The crash test explains that feeling , at least to me.

I agree 100% and the TL felt far more solid and planted, the TLX feels lights and less planted, clearly the TSX infusion since the TSX was ultra light and nimble. I am very disappointed in the crash results and exact either the 17 or MMC 18 will improve that. Funny the 16 Accord did fine.

In 2014, Honda retrofitted already sold Fits to improve the performance on the small overlap crash test. Honda Fit overcomes setback in small overlap test

I wonder if Honda will do something similar here.

Look at its competitors...BMW 3, Audi A4, Mercedes C300, Infiniti Q50, Volvo S60. The Volvo is the ONLY one that gets a good on that test.

Well, tranny improvements withstanding, thank goodness I have a 2015 TLX vs a 2016. Perhaps the key takeaway here is to ensure that it becomes a moderate overlap crash which has a G rating. However, that may be a little counterintuitive to steer further into the other vehicle or obstacle…just saying….
