Winter Tire Options
Hey Guys,
So winter is coming in Calgary, and I need to get winter rubber on my car soon.
I heard I can't change out my tire size due to TCS/ABS issues? Has anyone encountered issues like this?
The reason I'm asking is I'm thinking of just getting a 17" steel rim + winter rubber set (with 5x120 offset), and just want to make sure that everything works well afterwards.
OR I was thinking I could put winters on my 19" HPT rims. Does anyone know what tire size options I have? My Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s are 245/40/ZR19 - if that helps at all.

Meh. I guess. But still - I don't go out driving pointing at cars and saying 'oh ugly steel rims bro' during winter. It seems to be just a fact of life around here.

You can get great prices on alloys and winter tires from the Rack. Don't hesitate, as they run out of cheep winter wheels quickly every year. You can change them out yourself, all you need is a good torque wrench ($50).

on a civic steelies are all good but your 50k car needs something a little more refined. Like Mr Marco says "You can get great prices on alloys and winter tires from the Rack".

Gives me a bit of time to fix the light curb rash on one of my rims as well

I don't think the sensors know what size the tire is nor the rims. Stick with the same overall diameter and it should be fine. I am going to do the same with 17 inchers on a SH AWD. I would get steel rims if I could find them. It looks kind of combat for winter.

I enquired with Honda Canada and a few dealers in the Montreal area about installing 17 inch rims on my 2010 TL SH AWD w/Tech, they recommend against it as it may void any Acura warranty. I asked why and no one can give me an answer. I'm stuck as there is a substantial difference in price between 17 and 18 inch tires. And it is more cost effective to buy rims with winter tires mounted than to change 18 inch tires. Anyone out there install 17 inch winter tires on rims and what was your experience? Any problems ? caps59

All it has to do is read the signal. You can put those transmitters on any wheel, but it is better if the wheel is designed to support the TPMS unit that mounts with the valve stem as apposed to strapping on the inside of the wheel (old school).

These are the wheels I got for my TL last year.

Winter tires for the 19" A-Spec wheels are hard to find. Tire Rack lists three available options, have them in stock, but after shipping to Canada, duties, custom brokerage, Visa's 5% premium over actual exchange rates, etc, I would rather deal with a local merchant where I can get service on the spot and who will be less expensive after it's all said and done.
The drawback is that nobody carries the 245/40/19 size and the manufacturers are non-commital as to when they could ship to the dealer. After looking all over the city about a month ago, I more or less had to settle with the most expensive option , i.e. Pirelli which I did source at a good discount. This was still a far less expensive option than buying 18" rims and good quality 18" tires, the 17" not being an option.
Point is, don't wait.
