Question TPMS question???

I am thinking about putting a set of 19 inch rims from a SH-AWD TL on my FWD TL. They already have the TPMS sensors on them. Question is, will I have to take the car back to the dealer to get the new sensors programmed to my car or will they work since they came from a TL already?

You will need to get a new set ot PMS sensors (about $25 each) and have them installed in your new rims. There is no programming needed. They only alert you to a low tire pressure and will display current psi

If the sensors are in the "new to you" wheels, just put the wheels on and the sensors should register with your in car unit in just a couple of minutes. No need to calibrate or go to the dealer.

I'm trying to understand why you would say this. If the new wheels can accommodate the original sensors why would he need to get new ones? The existing 4 sensors are already paired up with the car. The only trouble would be that the person doing the swap would need to break down all 4 of the original wheels and tires to get the sensors out.

The new to me 19" wheels already have the original sensors that came on them from Acura. I really don't want to break the old tires down and swap sensors. I actually plan on selling the 17" wheels with tires & sensors I hope.

I said this because I expect that he is getting new tires and wheels. I have been told by Acura and tire shops that it is "better" to get new ones vs trying to re-use the old ones. Taking the tires off and TPMS sensors from a set of wheels can damage the sensor, I was told. If there is an issue, then you have to pull the wheel(s) back off and replace anyway.Call it peace of mind and not all that expensive for that peace of mind.

That is what I did when I replaced tires/wheels on my '08. Better safe than sorry, IMO.

You are set. You car will "mate up" with the new sensors in a few minutes of driving and you'll be good to go.

If you're swapping sensors to new wheels, this may be true.

In the OP's case, since the wheels already have sensors mounted, it's un-necessary. As you've clarified in the later post - just put the wheels on and go.

It will take all of 1/2 mile for the computer to recognize and read your 'other' set of TPMS's. Each time I've switched from summer/winter/summer/winter/summer, 1/2 mile was all it took.
