Angry They ruined my new wheels

Long story short.

I felt a vibration while highway driving the first time this week so I went back to the installers to get the balancing checked. As it was the taped weights weren't put on right and a few fell off. The tech assured me he would prep the wheels properly so the weights would not come off.

He used brake cleaner

Brake cleaner removes the clear coat from your wheels

Arg, that's horrible news. Are they going to pay for replacement?

One is really bad and two more are marginal. I think they can be repaired, but I'm just pissed

Since your car is fairly new, tell them you want a replacement. When I as up at Acura of Boston to fix a defective tire, they scratched up one rim bad and replaced it with a new one, without me even asking. I just showed up to pick up the car and they told me that they scratched it bad but replaced it with new. If they didn't say anything I would not have even noticed they replaced one rim. That's customer service!

That's a shame. I would ask for a complete replacement. Don't shops have insurance for this very thing?

They do, but they are putting me through the repair thing first. The other problem is that these wheels are discontinued. It took me forever to find a set. If I can find more, I'll be lucky.

Gotcha. Well, I guess you could look at it this way... If the paint shop does really good work, the wheels will have a better clear coat finish/thickness than originally.

I talked to the wheel guy today. He is going to strip put a new clear coat on the lips. If I don't like, they will pay my original bill for the wheels. But if I can't find them, I'm screwed.

^ for a completely new SET or individual rims? you're not completely screwed? you could run on the set and with the new $$$ either buy replacement, or if you can't locate a new set...go with some volks

...and tim's doing that gb for the aspec kit, no? also a good choice!

Let's see what they do first. I didn't pick volks, I picked these. I searched for these even though they were discontinued. I'd only like them back the way they were.

So after waiting a month for the wheel repair guy, he finally works on the wheels today. He is supposed to strip and re-clear them, but ends up using something resembling silver paint. Now I have two wheels that look like crap. To top it off, they left a 5" long set of scratches on the rear quarter (right above the wheel well) that were absolutely not there earlier. When I called the owner to discuss the issues, he responded "you can't prove that I did this".

Just unbelievable that businesses operate like this... Since that placed messed up your wheels in the first place can you have them replace them since they can't fix them back to the original quality? Any Pics?

I'll get them tomorrow of the wheels. I have a crappy cell pic of the scratch though...I'll see if I can upload from my phone.

Hard to tell the size by the picture, but it's at least 5" long and a couple of inches with the few that are there.

Updated with pics of how bad a job that was done. One wheel on each side was to be stripped and re-cleared. I did not doctor the pictures in any way, nor did I make any adjustments with the camera. I don't understand why on full auto both pics of the repaired wheels ended up not focusing properly?

This is the end result:

Passenger rear (un-touched)

Passenger front (re-finished) :

Driver front (un-touched) :

Drivers rear (re-finished) :

The passenger side pics were taken in direct sunlight which is why there is so much more contrast between the two. The drivers side were taken in the shade, but there's still a pretty significant difference.

AND TO TOP IT OFF I JUST NOTICED THAT THEY GOUGED EVERY LUG RECESS ON BOTH WHEELS THAT THEY "REPAIRED".

All will be well. The wheel shop is reimbursing me for a brand new set, and having a body shop fix the scratches. I will be glad to pass on the info of the wheel guy that I would not use again for anyone in the tri-state area.

New wheels came in and they installed them Saturday. I'll get paid cash Tuesday. Now to get the scratches buffed out.
