Question Looking for wheel recommendations

Hi Everyone, I recently picked up an 09 TL, this is my very first Acura and I'm loving it. However, I'm not in love with the stock wheels and I'd like some recommendations.

I've seen a lot of nice wheels from the members here but mostly on lowered cars. Is it possible to get something nice and not have to lower my car?

I'm a sales guy so I do a lot of driving - I commute 40 miles to work everyday and it'd be safe to tack on another 100 miles a week visiting clients. I don't want something with super low profile tires either as I'd go broke replacing tires all of the time.

Thank you for your help

well it wil depend on what size you want..

i do 30-35 miles a day 5 days a week for work and im rolling on 20's with 30 series tires all around and i have no issues.. also im slammed.

im not sales so it may be kind of different as you may enter alot of drive ways and what not..

you can get a set of nice wheels, but i would suggest to get beefy tires. 19 inch would do the trick. You wont go broke replacing tires if you keep your alignment within spec.. you will be able to use its full life if alignment is good.

as far as recommendations.. its all based on personal preference.. if i show you some, you will probably not like.. and some that you do like.. well its pricey.. one thing i do suggest is to not get replica's or fake wheels..

thanks for your feedback. You're right, I prefer not to slam my car as I do a lot of work related driving. I'm in and out of driveways & parking structures a dozen times a day.

I'll look into 19's with beefy tires = how beefy do you think? 60-65 series? I've seen cars with rims that aren't lowered and there's a huge gap, will I have that gap?

20's look the best. Just make sure they are light weight. Don't be cheep and put some inexpensive chrome bling on the car just to look cool.

i would not recommend 20 as i too have 20's and they are not comfortable to drive on.. even with higher series tires, you loose soo much comfort.

Since your sales, 20's should be out of the question IMHO.

get 19's, tires are cheaper, you can go 40 series tires and you should be fine without a drop.

Yes. The larger the rim diameter and the thinner the tire profile, the more apparently big it is the wheel gap.

19s are only an inch above stock and 20's and the 4G bolt pattern give so many options

Sounds like a great recommendation - I'll check out some 19's. Should be a big upgrade as I just checked my stock rims and they're only 17 inches...

Potmilkz you were using a small and thin 20 inch tire size 235 30 20 thats why your ride was not comfortable.

Others have used larger and higher series 20 inch tires like 245 35 20 and 255 35 20 which is alot more comfortable.
its all personal preference but running 20 inch tires can be comfortable if one runs bigger size tire than what you had.
there's a huge comfort ride difference between tire size 235 30 20 and a tire size such as 255 35 20.

OP if 19inch wheels is your preference. go for it.
if 20inch wheels is your preference go for it just get the right tire size for comfort.

Thanks for your input FYAH. I like what Potmilkz recommended, 19's seem to work for me as I think 20's maybe too big and make my car look weird since I'm not planning on lowering my car.

^ In your situation 19's will work. Recommend using tire size 245 40 19.

Mine had 245 40 20 Goodyear Eagle GT-II on it at stock height and rides just fine and still has a ton of wheel well and no rubs... It's a fresh trade in and I got to see it before the guy trading it in pulled his 20's to put on his new TL... My first look at it I thought it needed 22's to attempt to fill the wells... after seeing some i'm going to go with 20's and drop it a bit but not slam it... So 20's will be just fine for you in my openion... I think they could even hold a 45 series tire with no issues...

Quick question guys - will this rim size fit my car without having to modify anything?

The offset is too low. You may even have to CUT the fenders with those.

Just my 2 cents, but I still think the 5 spoke 18" Tech. wheels I had on my wife's 10 TL SH-AWD were the best looking stock Acura factory wheels they made. The car rode great and plenty of tire choices out there and no worries when driving. Had 8mm spacers on the car all around to bring out the wheels a bit.

With 8mm spacers there will not be enough turns on the stock lug nuts. What did you use to make it work? ET lug nuts, extended wheel studs etc.

from what i recall, highest you can go on a spacer is 5mm with stock lug nut studs.. anything above 5 mm is dangerous.

Thanks Edward. When looking for a 19 inch wheel - what specs should I look for (sorry n00b question)?

So far I know 19 inch, 5X120 bolt pattern...I'm not sure about the other measurements...Thanks!

In this case, you'll have to do a search.

Different members are using different combination of wheel widths and offsets, all according to their unique tastes. Some like the wheels just tucked in, but others like them sitting flush with the fenders, etc.

So you'll first have to decide how far out you want your future wheels to sit in reference to the fenders.

I had no issues at all using the 8mm spacers. The 8mm = 5.04/16 inches. Had like 10 full turns with the lug nuts on the studs. You need like 8+ turns and you will be fine. I would never have chanced it otherwise if it was a safety issue especially because it was the wife's car. I'm sure all the studs are the same length? Again this was a 2010 SH-AWD with Tech. Pkge and the 5 spoke 18" wheels. Unless the 09 base TL has different studs?

who told you that 8+ turns is ok?

but if you can get 10 full turns on a lug, you should be fine.

again from what ive heard, any many many other people that recommended safe spacer with stock studs is 5mm

also, go with forged wheels.

this is how a wheel should be damaged under extreme circumstances
Possibly a rally, wheel stayed in tact, but came off the hub of the car.. quality!

this is a so called "forged" wheel should not crack. Driver did a sharp turn on a track event, and wheel completely came off.

You can actually get away with 7 turns and be fine. Then just torque to 90lbs and you'll be good to go. I've gone 5mm - 8mm spacers on many of my vehicles with no problems.
New cars come with pretty long studs today. Can't say the same for the cars from the 60's.
I'm 52 years old and have never had a wheel come off any of my vehicles. So don't give me this - who told you so - It's called use your common sense.

I actually don't trust the bolt on spacers with lug nuts as those put too much stain on the hubs. If your going to run a thick spacer than the best thing to do is change out the stock studs and replace with longer studs to be safe.

The factory spec. specifies 94 ft-lbs of torque, not 90, for the wheel lag nuts on the 4G TL.

just because you havent had issues with it doesnt make it correct.

again.. safe is 5mm, many have said this.. i follow what the community says rather than to trust one person.. just my personal opinion..

common sense is when 7 out of 10 people is telling you that 5mm would be the safest, and yet still believing that the other 3 out of 10 is correct.. smh

Yes the 5mm are the safest on any autos. Every car is different though. I run 5mm spacers on the front of my daughters 03 Maxima and 15MM on the rears. I know enough that I would not run anything bigger in the front without extended studs.
My point is that it seems that the SH-AWD I had, I was able to run 8mm spacers because I had enough turns on the factory stud. That is not going to be the case on all cars.
I am just telling the OP what I was able to do on my car. I am not telling him to do anything if he doesn't feel comfortable doing it. I'm sure he is capable of making his own decisions just as you are........

I'm talking to a guy about some used 19 inch wheels.

Can you guys tell me if this will this fit my 4G?

5X120 Bolt Pattern
19x8.5 Front - 19x9.5 Rear
45 Offset
Tires 225/35/19, 245/35/19

Thanks!

it will fit. its actually rather small..

i do recommend running a 245/35/19 in the front as well. a 225 is too small for your size car.

what is the bore size on the rims? you may need hub rings.

Hi potmilkz, do you mean the rim is small or the tire that's on it is too small?

I don't know what the bore size is...they are vmr 713's...

the rim is ok size, i would go bigger in the front since you have such high offsets.

The bolt pattern should fit...You don't plan on lowering the car going with the above tire sizes will only create more gap between the tire and fender . Plus since you're a salesperson that do alot of driving you'll need more rubber on the sidewall of the tires for a more comfortable ride. So look for tire sizes 245 40 19 or bigger for more comfort.

Look for a 19 x 8.5 wheel with a 35-40 offset. If its an 8" wheel you could probably go for a 30-35 offset... If its a 9" wheel look for a 40-45 offset.

Don't buy staggered cause your car is either FWD or AWD and neither is good for a staggered setup.

Tire size for 8" or 8.5" is 245/40/19, 9" get a 255/40/19. You could put a 245 on a 9" wheel as well...

Those are basically your parameters..

If you aren't going to lower you car i'd recommend:

-No lips as it will overemphasize the gap
-darker wheel finishes with the obv dark tire will hide the gap better...

-Thick spoke is better than thin 'tuner' spoke wheels

The TL has kind of a 'tankish' silhouette IMO (especially from front/ front-quarter view), and deserves a beefier type of wheel...

Potmilkz, FYAH TL, Booya 4139 - thank you very much for your help on this - I really appreciate it. Based on what you guys are telling me, I'll pass on these wheels until I find something more suitable - I wasn't totally in love with them in the first place.
