I already suggested the propeller shaft, so we will see what happens.
So, long story short, after replacing the half shaft, I took it in, the service manager drove it and acknowledged the sound. They ended up replacing the entire transmission and claimed this fixed it. Well, it didn't. I've been out of town and haven't gotten a chance to take it back in, but I'm going to try to schedule something this week. It's quite frustrating that they can HEAR the issue and not pinpoint it. I would also have expected them to replace the cheapest things first and not go with the tranny.

Speaking of which, I was told the tranny internals are brand new, but the housing was a refurb. Any thoughts on this?

I had the same noise in my '09, the dealer replaced the propeller shaft, (the one that connects the front transfer case to the rear diff) they also replaced the transfer case, the noise went away and has not come back since.

I am surprised that Acura still didnt figure out a way to fix this problem in the new TL. I just got my drive shaft propeller replaced last week for the same reason. My car had, at that time, a little over 6500 miles. Only 8 months old car. I dont know how Honda/Acura is ignoring this issue for this long...

I just got my 09 FWD 3 days ago. I heard the same noise coming home from getting my windows tinted. I wanted to try and tighten my windows, but obviously couldn't. I'll be bringing her in to the dealership Tuesday! ...it's still under warranty thank God!

This seems to be the key issue. The remaining noise on mine was some a wind noise at speeds over 70 (which they fixed somehow). Now my interior is quiet even at higher speeds.

(AWD, now ~42k miles)

This thread originally helped me solve the problem. I went to the dealer around 5 times, then showed them this thread in January 2011. They replaced the part, and the noise went away.

Fast forward to now, I'm at 44,000 miles, and the noise is back.

OMG! I started having this exact same problem yesterday on my 09 TL SH-AWD.
Whistling noise coming from the front of the car begins at about 30mph.
Gets louder as you go. Goes away as you brake below 15mph.
I have 35,000 miles.

Will go to the dealer and show them this thread...

I have a 2012 TL SH-AWD with 21,000 miles and have the same whistling noise above 40 mph. It almost sounds like a train braking, a metallic noise. It only comes one after 10-15 minutes when the car is warm and it is a constant noise above 40 mph. This is my first Japanese product as I usually buy German, so i am very surprised this is an issue that has not been addressed by a TSB or recall.

first off, your japanese product is an american made car....

now on to your problem....its the propeller shaft, if the part is in stock, its like an hour long job....

the part number was the same for 2009-2012, there is a new part that superseeds it and its found on the 2013, so if you take your car in, they will put the new part on...no tsb yet, but i suspect there will be....

Sorry to bring up an old topic........but I'm having d same problem on my 2012 TL. Noticed the whistling noise awhile ago but after 2yrs of ownership and 22k miles, it has become very annoying. I hear the noise @50mph and only when the windows are rolled up.......and it's loud. As someone here associated it to like a "tea kettle" whistle. Oh well, taking d car to the dealer in a few mins......

Just fixed my 2010 with 36k
Same whistling noise as others described, started about a month ago, intermittent at first. New propeller shaft solved it.

Just got my car back from the dealer and the new part will not be in until Friday. The part number is 40100-TK5-A03. I'm FWD until the new propeller shaft can be installed.

I'm getting the same little whining sound above 40, (2012 AWD) coming from the passenger window/footwell? It does not get louder at higher speeds. wondering if it's the Prop or CV at this point due to perceived location. I'm actually hopeful that it's the same issue as others since it sounds common...and the dealers must be ready for it so to speak.

So, I took the TL (2012 with 29k on the clock) in to my dealer today to see about getting the whistle diagnosed. One of the senior techs rode with me to hear it, and as soon as I hit 50 mph, he said "yup, that's the prop shaft whine"...I was amazed that he admitted it, considering I read a few people on here being told 'it's the nature of the car" and whatnot. He was more that eager to order the part for me. I can't say i'm not happy, but I wasn't expecting that from the dealer. Very cool...tho I'm without my car for a few days.
He also made mention that Honda/Acura will potentially warranty any future replacements since it's a going concern (without a TSB) with the AWD.
Just another reason why this is my 5th Honda product.

Add me to the list. I bought mine about 6 weeks ago CPO. Sadly they neglected to fix the whine before selling the car and I noticed it while driving it 700 miles back home. Brought it into the dealer last week, after about 20 minutes they said yep it's the prop shaft and got it ordered. Took it in Monday morning and it was replaced under warranty in about 3 hours. No more whine. Great service from the dealer which made me happy since the dealer up in MD where I bought the car screwed me a bit - they didn't fix the whine, left an ugly scratch on one part of the quarter panel with some rust showing, and then got me for $90 on a "miscommunication" about the final price. But the dealer down here in GA was super quick and didn't try to jerk me around at all.

The pitch of the sound increases as the speed increases until its not really audible after 50 mph or so. As soon as I let go of the gas pedal, the sound stops half a second later. As soon as I push the accelerator, I hear the sound again. If I maintain speed the sound becomes almost inaudible. Is this the same thing you experienced? Are you still hearing the sound now a couple of months later?

Thanks.
Hi All - 2012 TL SH-AWD 6sp, 78k. Exact same issues here with the "tea kettle" whistling sound while accelerating, before and after recent replacement of propeller shaft. Just bought vehicle out of town in Sept 14 and selling Acura dealer did not replace/fix issue. Too to different Acura dealer, had items in stock... replaced shaft and also Acura Client Relations were aware of issues... Going back in this week for second inspection... Don't know what else it could be...

Replaced propeller shaft, noise still there... Dealer put car on lift and located noise... Rear differential bearing issues, possibly need full replacement at 81k miles.

I have this same issue with my 07 RDX, replaced front bearing at first thinking that was it but the whinning noise is still there. I know my warranty is out, car has 100k plus. Is this a known issue/recall that acura/honda will help with the cost or am I SOL.

My '10 SH-AWD with 53k miles makes the same whistling sound when I'm at anywhere from 10 - 40 mph. I'll mention this the next time I'm in there for an oil change. It doesn't bother me too much as long as I have the audio on. =)

I plan to take mine tomorrow. I also hear a whistle sound and it happens when temperature is warm. Wondering if this will be covered under power train warranty since that's what is left.

Took mine to Acura of North Toronto. They did a road test and did not find anything next they put up on the hoist as the wheels were revolving tech used a stethoscope and found the noise. Its the bearing in prop shaft that's bad so they ordered the exact part listed here. Going tomorrow to get the new prop shaft.

Got my car back I can not say its 100% gone or if its some thing else. Going to drive bit more to see if I can reproduce the sound again at different speeds. One thing for sure its not loud any more.

Jayro,
I see that you are in Florida. Which Acura dealership near Clearwater did you go to?

My 2012 AWD TL started to have this squeal/tea-kettle sound for the last 6 months or so. It was previously intermittent. However with 33600 miles now, it is rather consistent now anytime over 25 MPH-50MPH and getting louder. I am afraid after changing it now that it was reappear.

We should all pitch in and write a joint complain letter to Acura, as this issue seem to affect all SHAWD owners?

Just noticed the "tea kettle" whistling noise on my AWD '10 TL... I hear mine starting at about 25 MPH+. Any MPH below and I hear nothing. Kind of annoying now that I've noticed the noise. It just started smh. I also have 107K miles on mine and have always taken it to the dealer since I purchased the car at 31K miles. I'm guessing now the part and labor is probably up to $1500 since the last listed price on here was about 5-6 years ago .
