Whining noise in front of the car
#41
My 09 AWD TL started this around 22k miles and now I have about 23k. I've been trying to pinpoint something but the dealer wasn't being much of a help. I took it to them a few times and they persisted that it is wind noise. Drives me crazy because I know for a fact it's not wind noise. I figured it was something to do with a bearing or rotating part but I have another appointment with them tomorrow.. I told them about this thread and they said bring it in with you maybe we can talk to the manager and see what he can do. So anyone with this problem just try taking in this thread, maybe it'll make the difference between an annoying squel or a smooth ride the way Acura intended! Anyway, good luck to all of you that have this problem.

My Acura dealer in Hoffman Estates, Illinois changed the whole prop shaft. The service tech confirmed the noise, took the car on the lift and a second tech pinpointed the noise to the center support bearing.

I bought an Acura Certified Preowned 2010TL SH AWD Tech with 64k (42,000 miles) from an Acura dealer 4 weeks ago. I have only put 1000k/600 miles on it and yesterday driving home I noticed the whining sound from the front of the car for the first time. Logged onto this site to see that this seems to be a common issue. I have booked an appointment at my local Acura dealer and will update my experience after the service visit. My car is still under the full warranty and also has a 130k/80,000m Powertrain warranty.

I just picked up a 2010 with 21k on it. Noticing this exact noise from front right starting at 25-30mph and increasing in pitch. Has anyone really got a great technical explanation of this? Is it the bearing material? too much clearance to the shaft and bearing(or not enough)? Surface finish? Engineer here so curious to understand exactly whats going on.......and what the risk is for it to come back after warranty is out

2012 TL SH-AWD 24k miles.... I had the whining noise between 30-60 mph. The dealer is replacing the propeller shaft. Is this going to be a continuous problem? Some posters on this forum have already had it replaced 3 times! The dealer said it's a $1500 part. Thank goodness it's under warranty.

The moment I walked in with this kind of a symptom on my 2010 TL SH-AWD 40K miles, the service guy knew that it was a bad propeller shaft. Fixed under warranty and no issue since.

Simple - to determine if its your prop shaft on AWD 's Amp up your call until you can hear the noise. Arrange to have the dealer have a bay open and remove the prop shat ( takes 10 minutes ~5 bolts) Take the care back on the road ( it wont hurt the car ) with just front wheel drive; and listen for the sound. All the dealer know they can do this ....

It was 3 bad wheel Bearings. Two in the back...and Passenger side. I'm Amaze by that to be honest. Car aint even hit 37,500mi yet. And no Mods done to it yet. But at least it was covered under warranty. They check the Shaft and call it good. but here is the carzy part. driving back home I hear the same winding noise..........

There is only one sure way to know if its the prop shaft...
Get the car hot, have them immediately remove the the prop shaft - drive it at the speed you hear the sound.
Make sure you drive before and after with customer tach person in the car.
if they say they wont do it then go to another dealership

Burning Brakes
I had a similar whining noise that drove me crazy. After I divorced my wife the problem went away. Ha ha.
Can I ask something of you? The prop shaft is listed as an assembly in the online OEM supplier parts diagrams. There isn’t a part number listed for the bearings. Can you ask for the part number of the bearing they used and post it for us? If I have a bearing go bad out of warranty I would like to have that number for my records. A new prop shaft is about $800.

Interesting you ask the same question i asked the dealer .... I was told The bearings and the prop shift are not separate parts - but are housed together so you will need to replace both - whether this is true or not i am not sure - Good Luck

Just wanted to chime in here and say thanks for this thread. I had the same symptoms (whining/squealing noise at above 40 mph that went away below 25 or so) that showed up a week ago. My 2009 TL has 94,000 miles on it; repairs are being covered by AcuraCare, so I guess that gamble is working out for me.
First time I've needed any repair work other than scheduled maintenance, except a speaker that blew about a year after I bought the car.

Anyone in the DFW area? I've tried 2 dealers and they only employ people who are deaf or hard of hearing. I made a trip to Austin last week and the noise made the trip miserable.
I'm sure they will hear the noise now that I'm out of warranty. I have some mechanical knowledge and I'm tempted to pull the shaft out myself.

Well after replacing brakes, rotors and custom wheels I finally got the brain storm to check with Acurazine for similar symptoms, duh...first search came right up! Freaking propeller shaft! My 2010 TL SH-awd was over miles and definitely out of warranty at 84k! Regardless, after reviewing all the post and thinking this should in fact be a recall, I printed out the messages and marched on into Rosenthal Acura of Gaithersburg, MD! As expected service advisor "MALCOLM" was being a total DICK! He constantly repeated "it doesn't matter...cars out of warranty" to the point I got fucking pissed and went in on'em! I resonated contrary it does matter because at this point it's a product issue! Long story short I met with Ben the service manager whom at this point was a fucking ray of sunshine! Dude sympathized with my dilemma, asked me a few questions reference the honda's/acura's I've owned in the past put me in a loaner and advised he'll see what he could do. Amazingly on the way home he informed me that Acura in "Good Faith" will cover the repair 100%! Give him a couple days to order the part and he'll contact me when it's done. Next surprise I was contacted a couple hours later to learn my car was finished. They had a part in stock and the tech got done with it today. Well. I'll be picking it up tomorrow. Thanks to these post and one in particular to request a Good Faith repair things seem to have worked out for now. In addition, on a separate note...if anyone is having issues with wheel shake at higher speeds I was told to have my 20" balance on a Road Force Balancer! Typical balancing machines are able to effectively balance aftermarkets for higher speeds and not all shops/dealerships use these machines. Ensure the dealer has one prior to having your wheels installed. Thanks again ACURAZINE and all your helpful posts!!!

Does anyone have a clip of what a bad shaft sounds like? I have a whistle noise as well when my car changes to the 2nd gear. Not sure if this is all related or I have another issue?!. Whistle sound comes as the gear is changing.

I have a 2011 awd tl, with 34K miles on it. Would a short ram intake cause a whistling sound when cruising at 50-60mph? I hear this noise with the windows closed. Only hear it when speeds reach 50-60, and then it's constant until I come below 40mph.
#62
Any suggestions or answers to the question above? Thanks

Finally, got the time to upload this clip. Relatively, the road noise was much louder than the propeller shaft bearing noise. The bearing noise started at 4 sec mark. Tried to move the camera to find the optimal position to pick up the bear noise.

So glad this thread was bumped...I starting hearing this problem on the interstate on my way to work this am. It does it when I speed up to 50+miles..I just got this car 3/14/14 and it is a base CPO Acura TL. It is almost like a whining/whistling sound.
If this is the wheel bearings will my warranty cover it?

Just an FYI if there are some people that still have this issue. I have a 2012 TL AWD and I had the same whinning noise. I took it to a dealership and they called me back within an hour saying it was the propellor shaft, Acura had issued a bulletin, they had the "upgraded" part that doesn't just replace the problem but the part actually prevents it from happening again, all under warranty

I had the same problem with my 2012 TL SH-AWD at 3500 miles. A soft whistling that began at 40 MPH and increased in pitch, not volume, until 65 MPH where it remained constant. Sounded like a teapot. Acura service was able to confirm it during a test drive. They located the source of the problem using a stethoscope - a propeller shaft bearing. They replaced the propeller shaft - p/n 40100-TK5-A02. The whistling is gone.

fixed
Took mine in last week and the dealer replaced my prop shaft. They had one in stock, they said they usually try to keep one ready since this is a prevalent problem. They said it happens more on 09 - 12 and they thought they might have done one 13. They also said the heat from the exhaust shouldn't be a problem. Its not hot enough that far away from the manifolds.
Anyone rack up a pot of mileage since getting prop shaft replaced? This has me thinking about buying an extended warranty.

Noticed whistling noise while driving above 40 mph while car has been driven for 10 miles or so. Goes away under 40mph or so. Dropped it off at Acura Columbus and they could not hear the sound (of course). I left work early to drive with them. Finally was able to get master tech and tech manager to agree they heard it. I told them propeller shaft, CV, bearing ... something. They tried to say it was normal. Im like H* no its not. Car was not making the sound before I did a 600 miles round trip to Chicago. Word of advise if your still under warranty and miles allow drive the S* out of your car lol. They looked for the grommet near the window and they were all there (kudos for the Acura service bulletin on that). They are going to hook up the microphone and drive it. Hoping they finally agree with me its the propeller shaft. 2012 Acura TL AWD 6MT 13k miles.

Just took my 2012 Tech AWD in for the same issue. As others have mentioned, dont accept a response like "thats just the nature of the car" or something along those lines. This sound is not normal and although not drastically loud, it is suuper annoying and not something you should have to put up with. If one dealer does not agree or is giving you a hard time, move on to the next dealer. Worst case you're out the $60 diagnostic fee and now know which dealer to avoid in the future.

Anyone know what the technical service bulletin number for this prop shaft issue is?? I'm experiencing the same problems as described throughout this thread and need to take it to a dealer...
Have under 30K miles on a '12 sh-awd, and everything should be covered under AcuraCare, right? If they try to pull some sneaky sh*t at the dealer, it would be good to have the TSB on hand.

arpypat I don't think they have a TSB on the TL only the RL. I took mine to dealer 3x and had a local rep drive it with me. They fixed the rear diff and the noise is still there. They argued with me that its not the propeller shaft. Used the microphone and nothing...coff coff... Taking it to another acura dealer today. Constant noise once car has been driven at highway speeds for 10 min. Gets higher in pitch with higher speed. Moving wheel, pressing clutch, or breaking does not change sound. Will keep everyone posted. 12 with 17k

Follow up ... I had same issue with my 4G TL AWD 3.7L. I took it to a dealer 3x and they could not find the issue. I told them what it was from the beginning and they wanted to argue with me about it. Even had a regional rep drive with me. Replaced rear diff and did not solve problem. I took it to another Acura dealer and they fixed propeller shaft = drive shaft and problem gone. The sound came on driving for about 10 min above 40mph. Push in clutch still made sound. Turned wheel did not affect sound. Breaking changed pitch but not volume. Driving between 40 to 50 and 70 changed pitch but not volume. The car came with a faulty bearing TK03. They since updated the part with TK05. I am not aware of any TSB but the RL is known for having same issue. Hope this helps out someone. If your having this issue you may want to bring in this thread for proof.

just took my 2010 TL into the dealer for a whistling/hissing sound after about 20mph. they said that they are damn near certain its the wheel bearing. after reading the forums here i was leaning in the direction of prop shaft... dono

for SH-AWD TL's to determine if its the prop shaft or wheel bearing. Have the dealer drive the car Without the prop shaft ( running on only front wheel drive) You will know for sure whether its the wheel bearing or the Prop shaft... This is how my dealer determined it was the prop shaft
