Remove A-Pillar without deploying air bag..??

Hello everyone,
Has anyone tried to remove the A-pillar "successfully"?
I'm thinking about trying that but the manual mentioned about the chance of deploying the airbag..

I don't want to cause any unnecessary repair cost .
Any helps are appreciated..

Undo the battery and wait 30 minutes. Make sure you have the radio codes, this removes power to the car and the airbags. Also I believe all you have to do is unclip the pillar and pull outward.

I removed my A-pillar without any issues. Just take your time and don't force anything and it should be fine.

that little square that says ABS is infact a clip.

once you pry that ABS clip off the a-pillar comes right off.

No chance of air bag deployment at all.

if you're really scared, un-hook the battery like csmeance suggested

This is what really concerns me...

The manual uses a rubber mallet to hit the SRS logo in order to remove the screw. I haven't thought about un-hook the battery terminal. I will do that just to be safe.
Thanks guys.

I had to replace mine due to a grease stain that was impossible to remove with cleaners etc. If you are not planning on keeping the pillar you can pry the clip off, essentially deforming the material of the pillar, if too unlucky. The safe way of not deforming it is to bang that "ABS" hard enough to brake the clip edge behind (where the edge of the F arrow is). The replacement clip is: 91561-TA0-A11, costs around $3.

By the way, the triggers of the airbag are nowhere near that area and the airbag is smart enough not to be deployed unless it receives a direct command from the computer, at a specific voltage. There are enough stupid-proof mechanisms built into these things for safety. But go ahead and remove the "-" battery terminal just to feel safe.

Dont use a rubber mallet, then.

it's just a clip.
you can push it back in with your fingers.

The clip is internal, you can't see it so i don't think you have an option to push it back. I believe this is the reason why the manual suggested to gently tap the pillar so the "F" section of the clip will be broken off hence the clip will need to be replace.
I will disconnect the negative terminal just to be safe.
Thanks for the inputs all.

Well. The clip costs $9 + tax here in Canada.

I agree, the design should have some error-proofing mechanisms built into it but looks like the clip replacement is unavoidable.

^^^^^

These clips are specially designed to be used in securing pillar trims on curtain airbag equipped Honda/Acura vehicles, such that when the airbags deploy, the pillar trims will stay in place rather than flying out towards the occupancies inside the vehicle.

As a result, they have to be destroyed, by the rubber mallet, in order to release the pillar trims.

So never reuse any old clip, for the sake of safety reason.

A few bucks is nothing when compared to losing an eye or gaining a permanent gash across the face.

I bought a bunch of small parts from DelrayAcura on-line when the Canadian dollar was at par. Total bill came to -20% with shipping and all import duties. To give you an idea, one mud guard in Canada costs around $100. The entire set, all 4 corners, from the US costs $100 !!! The most f*cked up thing is that most of these parts are made right here in Ontario by 3rd party suppliers, shipped duty free to the US for assembling vehicles under the NAFTA agreement and then imported back into Canada with duties/taxes on them.

Yeah, free health care for everyone ! LOL. (don't get me started...)

Ive always removed the ABS square clip with a flat head.
get it underneath the ABS square and pry.
use a towel or cloth to prevent scuffs, tears into interior

and I thought you all were talking about putting the a-pillar back on....

This actually is a good idea to pry the ABS square. It will expose the clip after the square is removed. I'll try this when it gets a little warmer. Too darn cold right now...
