Hey all I just got a 12 Advance SH-AWD I noticed that more than half of the times that I turn on the car, a weird noise comes from the front end. It sounds like chuckle or something from a bird, or a muffled rattle, only way I can describe it.

Has anyone had something like this? Acura did replace the propellor shaft when I first got the car, could they have messed something up?

 

I get the same sound when I start my '12. I left it as "normal" start up sound with various electrical components going through their start cycle and fluids starting to circulate within. With my previous 03 TL, it made different sound with ABS check sound within a few seconds of starting. As long as the car drives ok with no dummy lights on, good to go.

 

I just think cause I don't hear it every time I start the car that something isn't right. It literally sounds like a muffled bird that someone stepped on.

^^ OMG, it does sound like a bird as you described!! I have a 2012 and never heard that noise....I would have a dealer (or SPCA) check it out.

Sly, i had this noise too on my 12 advance awd. Mine only makes this noise on the very first startup of the day. It does it when its colder more often too. I hear it make that noise but louder, when i put it in reverse when the idle is high (from the first start). If i wait for the idle to come down and let it warm up, it doesn't do this. I was talking in pm to another member on here that had the same problem/noise. He took it to the dealership at night. He then returned the next morning to show the tech the noise. They replaced a transmission filter. It stopped making the noise...he also said it doesnt effect or damage the transmission, but is more annoying than anything. I have not brought mine in as it has not gotten worse, plus it doesnt happen as much since its warmer and i let my car idle drop a bit

 

Here is the other members response:

Cold start gurgle and then all was ok for the rest of the day, no gurgle when hot start....
External transmission filter was replaced under warranty, since then all is good....no annoying cold start gurgles...

 

The guy at the dealership says the car doesn't have a transmission filter...

 

Is that true?

 

Any help with this? The dealership had my car for 3 weeks and replaced the tensioner and drive belt. Said they thought it was fixed but the first day back it still makes the same exact noise. Should I just go to another dealership? They swear there is not transmission filter

 

Is that power steering fluid?

 

Doubtful, only on a cold start

 

I think the trans filter was new in '12. Not sure if it is used in all models.
The dealership guy who spoke to you may not know which TLs have the filter. Check it out on the Acura site.

 

Well.. yes and no
There is a filter in the transmission but it is considered non-serviceable. Meaning, it is not a maintenance item like many other makes.

 

They said they are going to call Acura...such a annoying process..

Ironically, one poster said this "The dealership has already replaced the alternator belt and the belt tensioner adjuster, also the propeller shaft but that was bc another problem.”

Finally one person said this "Good news... You don't have to live with this noise any longer. My 2012 TL SH-AWD made the same exact noise, every morning for the first few minutes after starting it up. And the colder the weather, the worse it was.

I took my car to the dealer a few days ago and they diagnosed it as a failed transmission filter. The transmission filter is external to the transmission, it's cylindrical in shape and apparently has a baffle inside of it that was broken, causing the noise. When they called me and told me this I was skeptical but they replaced it and the strange cold startup noise is 100% gone!"

This poster included his Pohanka Acura receipt to show the transmission filter that I was told by you all doesn’t exist. Please see attached.

Thanks for this post. I have been to several dealers who weren't able to recreate the issue. This information should help get my situation resolved.

 

You should be able to have the car sit there overnight, tell a tech to put his head under the car by the drivers tire and listen.

 

That's the same exact noise I have. 2012 AWD.

First thing in the morning. It doesn't happen every morning though. I have appointment with dealer Friday.

 

I'd print out the attached service bulletin in the previous posts by me and if they give you an issue, then copy my email to the manager with the sound clips.

OR you could let them do it on their own. I did get 2 belts changed for free so whatever haha
