Paper/Plastic Bottle Crunch From Reverse To Drive Acceleration??

I know some have already mentioned the CLUNK noise when going from Park to Reverse and said its normal for Honda/Acura

But ever since owning the car (about 6 weeks now) I notice most of the time that when I reverse out of my driveway and go from R to D or when going from P to D and accelerating to go, a get a slight crunch type of noise as if you were to crunch a piece of paper, or slightly crunch an empty plastic water bottle. Its loud enough for me to notice, but very slight that it hasn't really bothered me.

I assume its something engaging when shifting gears and accelerating as I only notice it when I shift into D and start moving, never from a stop or light etc.

Any ideas? Anyone else notice this ? Something I should get checked or worried about??

Usually on the Accord this had to do with the brakes checking themselves so this might be the same noise you are talking about. Happens after you start the car. and frist starting driving off when you are in drive. Maybe you hear it more since it is more quiet at home then when you are out and about.

Yes - its almost like a quick crunching noise (maybe the paper and bottle was too exaggerated) and yes it only happens when changing from P or R to D on a start and acceleration.

Do any others notice this or have this? Just want to know if its consistant across the TL's or if I need this looked into.

I would describe it as a loud click, but your analogy about a crunch on a plastic water bottle is a good one. Totally normal. Yes, something is definitely engaging.

So nothing to worry about or get checked - totally normal?

Good to know - will just let it be I guess.

Anyone know exactly whats happening?

have you tried isolating the sound? maybe go into N, then without holding the brakes, go into D. Do with and without applying brake pressure.

do you notice any sort of movement? does the car lurk forward (stopped by brakes)?

It's probably the ABS self-check, I had a Toyota that did that too. It happens after you start and reach a certain speed (like 2 mph).

OP- you ever figure the noise out? I have the same exact noise especially when it is very cold out. I know it is not the brakes as I know that sound. It sounds almost like the body rubbing or a bushing. All the suspension components look fine and the car drives fine. It is just there faking off from a stop and is worse when first leaving my house and when the temps are very cold. I have a 99 tl.

I'm not sure what the noise is but I know that the 5 Honda products (4 TL's 1 Ody) we have owned since 2k ALL make it. It seems to be a normal trait of their vehicles and not anything to worry about.

I mentioned this months agao about this same issue. Wife pulls out of the garage in reverse and then puts it in drive and it goes click. Bugs the crap out of me but I'm hearing it's normal. Still don't like it when I hear it. Occurs only in the morning when car is cold.

I guess I will just consider it normal. I have had quite a few Honda's and Acuras from the 80's, 90's and 2000' s and never had that sound on any

Been pretty cold here lately. Today it was 8 degrees first thing and the crunch noise was pretty loud when first taking off from a stop. By the afternoon it was in the upper 20's and the noise was barely noticeable. I am thinking it is either a rubber bushing (although I can't see any of them visibly cracked etc or maybe the body of the car itself. I don't think anything in the suspension is the cause but who knows??

Funny, I came across this old thread I had posted so I figured I would post an update. Soon after I had posted this, I found that my drivers side upper ball joint had some play. The crunch was actually water inside the joint freezing and when I would go to drive off it was the ice breaking.

Did it freeze in the summer as well????
I have a '10 base fwd and it makes the click sound described above.
I just notice it on the first shift into D for the day. What it sounds like is similar to the sound of the doors automatically locking but not as loud. And I have reprogrammed that so the doors don't actually lock. I thought maybe the car was till sending a signal to lock the doors. Perhaps it is the abs self check. I did not know about that so thanks for mentioning it guys. In any event, I don't think the noise I have is a problem or anything requiring a fix.

Regarding the harsh shift into gear when engine is cold, this is partly related to engine revs. If engine revs are high, line pressure in the trans is high, so don't shift into R or D above idle speed if you can help it. Providing it is safe to do so you can reduce the harshness by taking your foot off the brake before the shift occurs. This will reduce "wear and tear" (a technical term) in the trans.

The crunch noise came on in the cold temps and then I replaced the upper ball joint.

Folks, I have a 09 TL base and had the very same issue with the clicking sound on cold days when I put the car first time into D. It was a resounding click.
Did the issue go away after replacing the upper ball joint?

I have the same issue and it's with the cold as well. I think it's more or less normal but I'm not 100% sure... Only happens in the cold when the cars not warmed up. If I leave the car on for like 5-10 minutes then there's no sound.

Try this: when shifting from R to D first thing in the morning when its freezing out there, move the steering wheel dead center, shift from R to N, press firmly on the brakes and in a second or two shift to D. I have noticed when I back up from my driveway and go from R to D with the wheel all the way left or right then that nasty sound makes me wonder if the tranny or diffs get banged hard. Somehow when the steering wheel is dead center it doesn't make that sound. I recently serviced the brakes, lubed caliper pins etc, and the sound isn't there anymore. So, in my case it was the brake calipers, getting frozen overnight, but not anymore.

I think people are describing different sounds in this thread and not all are the same, so my case may be unique.

Just some thoughts.
