Oil level warning light

Hi guys, I’m having an issue with my 2012 SH, I keep on getting a low oil level warning at low rpm’s, but my oil is definitely where it’s supposed to be, the car runs fine above 2000rpms. also if I try accelerate suddenly my car cuts off when I hit VTEC and I get an SH and a check engine light. Has anyone encountered anything like this before? I’m currently in Texas but I have a long drive before I make it home and I’m worried about ruining my engine. Please advise thanks in advanced!

Both of my SH-AWD's had intermittent low oil lights, and I determined it was just a malfunctioning sensor, as my oil was topped off. I check my oil every couple of days since both engines consume oil. From the research I've done, it's not uncommon for the oil sensor to fail.

However, what you're describing seems to be different since you get a fuel cutoff, and also the low RPM symptoms. I'll follow progress on this thread in order to be aware in case I encounter the problem as well.

Well VTEC moves a lot of oil so that is what will happen if you enter VTEC with low oil. It will trigger the VTEC error code if you scan it which displays as check engine and Shawd on the cluster. Now if you are sure the oil is full and you are getting the low oil light then the oil pressure switch is bad and needs replacing. When my oil pressure switch was bad it would flash low oil really quickly on the dash and it mostly did so at low rpm.

I bet the faulty sensor is triggering the VTEC warning because it knows it cant run VTEC with low oil. Replace it and see if your VTEC issue goes away too. Fyi the switch is shared with Honda and can be bought for half price at Honda compared to Acura.

If the oil level is OK, then check the oil pressure, if the oil pressure is OK, then the problem is in the oil pressure sensors (I have never seen 2 oil pressure sensors fail at once), if the pressure is not OK, then remove the oil pan and look in Oil Strainer, and the O ring that seals it, if everything is OK, then remove the timing mechanism and take out the oil pump, if the oil pump is worn out, then the pump needs to be replaced, if the pump is OK, then the engine needs to be replaced or rebuilt. Good luck!!!

Thank you all for feed back!

I know for sure that my oil is good, I have replaced the VVT switch (green) and the solenoid (silver) I thought I replaced the pressure switch too (Blk) but I just ordered another one just in case and I’m about to replace it again. When the issue started it was happening all the time, I’m sure I’m going to get laughed at for this but I did add Marvel’s mystery oil my last oil change and the problem went from happening all the time to the oil level warning light coming on only at low RPMs. I feel like adding that stuff did something to whatever is causing the issue. I didn’t notice any oil leaks on the oil pump side, I do have a noise coming from the right side but I’m assuming it’s the alternator pulley because I get a charging system error message every once a while. I just ordered a timing belt kit and a new oil pan because whoever had the car before ruined the drain plug and the oversized the heck out of it. Anyone ever have an oil pump fail on them? If so what was the symptoms?

There is such a thing called diagnostics, before replaced any pressure switches, you need to connect a $ 30 oil pressure gauge (https://www.harborfreight.com/engine...MaAkHXEALw_wcB) and find out the actual oil pressure.
A worn out oil pump will produce low pressure, causing you to have a warning light.

thank you, I will go ahead and do that, this threads into the oil pressure sensor(Blk) I’m assuming?

Just seen this video that might be helpful for your sensor location and change

I'm guessing this may not have fixed the issue given all the oil on the axle. I would start by testing the actual oil pressure before assuming a bad sensor. You could actually have low oil pressure.

Thank you for sharing,

I started testing the oil pressure but I was having issues getting the gauge to thread and I didn’t want to force it and ruin my threads. I proceeded with testing and at idle I was reading 10.1 psi which is what is called out in maintenance manual. Once I stepped it up to 3000 the gauge came loose and I had oil everywhere. I replace the old sensor with a new one and added oil and I’m still having the same issue. I went ahead and ordered a new pump, should arrive today and I’m going to replace everything timing belt and all the fixings🤞🏽
