Oil, Filter & other general maintenance items?

Hey y’all!

I recently bought a 2013 TL AT FWD at 116k and I’m looking for some sort of maintenance schedule and recommended parts list.

I see what the manual says but these cars are old enough that there should be additional preventative suggested items suggested.

When I had my BMW, the forum I was on had an ‘Enhanced Maintenance Schedule” that had additional items that made sense and were relatively straight forward. As a result, the car was pretty reliable for me for 14 years.

It was also very easy to just buy BMW parts and sources were plentiful and their part number system and various website resources made it very simple.

For Acura/Honda, I’m having a tougher time finding definitive guides.

Any pointers on guides?

As it stands, I’d like to do an oil/filter change, ATF/filter change (yes yes Honda DW1), Airbox & Cabin filter change. This spring I’ll do timing belt, etc.

Suggestions on engine oil & filter brands? (I previously used OE filter and M1 0-40, but for the Acura it seems like Wix XP & Castrol 0W-20 is the way to go? (Open to suggestions).

I also got DW1 on the way but I’m having trouble finding a genuine Honda tansmission filter. I see one on Amazon for $27, then a handful on eBay for $15-20 and dealer wants $45. Seems like fakes are floating around so how do I be sure to get a genuine one?

Same question on the crush washers? Dealer wants $4 for a washer and they’re like 20 for $6 on Amazon. How do I know I’m actuall getting a crush washer and not just a steel washer?

Same question on air filters. I was looking at getting a charcoal one, but a lot of negative reviews state airflow issues. I know the genuine one has lots of pleats which maximizes airflow.

Problem is, most people never even pay attention to this nuance. Just wondering if anyone here has and can point me in the right direction without just saying to buy everything at the stealership.

Thanks!

First and foremost, welcome to Acurazine! Congrats on the purchase. What other cars have you had in the past, aside from the BMW?

@mrphilipanderson made these custom maintenance cards a few months ago, so you can thank him.

I'm personally at the point in my life where I'm only willing to use OEM branded parts now. I've played around too much with aftermarket parts with my previous cars to understand that I just need to stick to OEM. So, I would personally recommend just purchasing OEM parts through the various online websites that stock up legit OEM Acura parts. Prices are reasonable, and there is no reason to skimp out. Save yourself the bullshit experience of trying to save some funds by finding alternatives.

In regards to oil, just use a brand that's tried and true for you. The oil that fits this description for me, is Shell Rotella T6. I've used it in all of my vehicles, and have also done UOA's with it. From my experience, it's the one oil that always performs, regardless of vehicle.

This year, two 4G TL's joined my stable, and I've only used OEM parts thus far for all of the maintenance performed.

Congratulations, I have the same car and have owned it since it had 4 miles on the odometer, it now has 105,000 miles.

oil and oil filter. I’ve used Mobil 1 0w20 AFE and EP exclusively since new and when I changed valve cover gaskets last year, the engine looked nearly factory new. I continue to use M1 oil. Oil filter, switched between OEM, Mobil 1-110 and SuperTech MP7317, now using the SuperTech for the next 5 oil changes, because they can be had for $5 and they’re built by champion labs, same company that build the mobil 1 filter.

Engine and air cabin filters, I’ve used OEM, STP and Wix, all have performed fine.

Tranny, replaced with DW1 every 20,000 miles and changed the tranny filter with OEM at 100,000 miles.

New water pump, timing belt, tb tensioner, t-stat with OEM parts.

brakes, huge fan of the Napa Adaptive One premium rotors and matching pads. Did the front at 65,000 and rears today!

installed a new Bando serpentine belt at 90,000 miles.

Drain and filled the radiator with OEM blue coolant at 50,000 miles and then again at 95,000 miles when I did the tv and water pump.

Replaced the PCV valves with an OEM unit at 50,000 and 100,000 miles to be safe.

replaced the gas cap with an OEM unit at 100,000 miles.

New Michelin All seasons from Costco at 40,000, 80,000 and a new set will go on at 120,000 miles.

at some point I need bleed the brake lines and then in the next year I’ll overhaul the suspension, but for now I’ll continue to enjoy my ride. It really is a nice car.

thanks,
George

This may sound like a silly question, but where is a good place to get crush washers for the oil drain plug?

It’s outrageous to me at the dealer wants four dollars for one crush washer, but when I look on Amazon and they will sell 40 of them for $8, I feel like that might just be stamped steel…

Also, does the trans drain plug have a crush washer or is that on the fill plug. If it’s on the fill, why bother replacing?

I bought 12 quarts of DW-1 on Amazon for $102, but now I’m questioning whether it’s legit or counterfeit.
