New Pistons & Rings
So, thought i would update everybody with my Oil Burning issue. Finally after being at the dealer for the past week, they have finally confirmed that the piston rings were not installed properly from the factory, causing all the oil consumption. They have ordered new Pistons, and rings and seals, and have sent the block to a machine shop to be cleaned up. Basically an engine overhaul being done on my 2012 TL SH-AWD 6MT, with 75,000km. SO those that are burning oil, there is your issue, it's the piston rings.

wow! I'd push for the engine to be replaced vs. rebuilt and machined already.. that's pathetic.. another ding against Acura lately. they've gone to the dogs.. nothing like their quality used to be like. This is what happens when you have them built in America, their quality goes down to Chrysler levels... too bad..

I can only imagine the trouble the techs went through to document everything so that the Honda people can see and approve this type of work under warranty. I wonder if it would have been easier to get you a new engine, or even send the old one back to the factory for a closer examination.
Anyways, kudos to the dealership for doing the right thing.

Mine has been pretty consistent at about 1/2 qt every 1,500 miles. Dealer said they would do a leak-down test and document results, also told me Acura considers it "normal" for consumption of 1 quart every 1,000 miles

oh man i'm glad they found the problem...though our cars are man made some of them had faults that slip through the crack sorry it was yours, what they should as a courtesy for your inconvenience is just give you a new tl or acura of your choice, i'm just a philanthropist but i'm just saying and this would even open a can of worms...
^^^ i wpuld also like to add that i had a 92 accord everyone knows those and everytime i check the oil there were no variance - + in qts with 200K plus miles

Burning Brakes
Starting in 2012 the 3.7L has aluminum cylinder liners.
The 3.5L has iron (steel) liners.
I seems that these oil consumption issues are related to this new feature.
I think I read somewhere that the break-in period is critical on the 3.7L for this reason.
There are millions of engines which basically do not consume any oil.
So it is BS to say that 1 quart per whatever is normal. Almost zero is normal.
1 quart per 1000 mi is the limit where they consider it enough of a problem to think about fixing it (which is ridiculous mho).

All Acura 3.7L have aluminum cylinder liners which started before 2012. My ex's 2008 Odyssey had a recall (extended warranty) for oil burning which has a 3.5L. I don't know if these oil burning issues are related.

I also can imagine the fun the tech who did the job had. He probably had a blast re-building a J engine. I mean, these guys don't get to do these things every day! Bet you they have to deal with boring rattles and programing lost keys all the time

thats rediculous. 1 liter every 1000 miles. youd run out of oil if its burning like that before the next oil change. especially with synthetic at 7500 mile intervals. these engine wont have more than 4-5 liters of oil.
I thought that Honda/Acura was good at building engines. god knows that their transmissions are shit.

The Original Shawdy
It's not only the car but the oil you choose to run. Some oils burn faster then others. When I ran mobile 1 full synthetic in my Tsx, it last a lot longer then running Royal purple. I paid the extra for the performance, not the life.
