J37 oil consumption/Valvoline Restore and protect oil

Going to give the new Valvoline Restore and Protect oil a shot in the 2010 TL SH AWD. Mine didn't meet the threshold for excessive consumption, however 1 qt in the first 2,000 miles after an oil change and less miles than that before adding more as the oil is in there longer is not what I (or any of us) prefer. Since it's dirty rings that lead to this problem, if this oil does what it has been advertised to do, maybe it'll make some improvement.

I realize it won't fix the issue of the rings that causes this issue, but if this oil cleans things out over 3 or 4 oil change intervals (I go 50% on the oil minder), the deposits that keep the rings from sealing properly could be mitigated. My 2010 has 207,xxx miles now, but it's been the same pattern since I bought the car used years ago. Gotta change the oil, so may as well try this one.

I searched and haven't seen any threads mentioning this so I wanted to put it out there.

Keep us posted on the result. My 2010 barely met the replacement threshold, and I was happy that Acura authorized the ring/piston replacement. That was several years ago. The car came back to me as a slightly smoother-running, slightly better-mpg vehicle, with no noticeable oil usage. Post-pandemic, I drive less (maybe 5-6K per year on my TL) so I have the oil changed once per year. So far (raps on head), I've seen no oil issues, and the car continues to run great at about 72K miles.

I'd really think about a new TLX-Type S, especially if it were available with a 6MT, but since there are no mid-size luxury sedans available any longer (much less AWD) with a manual, I'll happily keep my TL.

thank you for posting, I've seen some stuff online about this and am interested to see your results. They said it can take 3-4 oil changes to see the benefit/cleaning

I will short change the oil this time to get this oil in the engine. Being a 3 or 4 OCI claim on Valvoline's part it'll be interesting at what point (if there is a point) an improvement is noted.

Will keep updates posted here!

Chemtool is useless with clogged and stuck oil rings.

A little over 2,000 miles on the oil change currently. Valvoline says 3-4 oil changes for it to work, so not holding my breath yet. Changed to the Valvoline in Mid-July when I took a 1,500 mile road trip to Texas and back. Tuned 210,000 miles on that trip. So, the oil change interval started with continuous higher speed running in very hot temps for hours on end. (especially in Texas, love the 75 mph limit where you can push easily into the 80+mph range on the 2 lane roads w/not much worry of attracting attention). Figure that would be a good start vs daily driving so I held off a bit on making the change until mid July despite posting in early June. However, the experiment if you will, is on.

This is the point (2,000 miles) the oil level begins to drop during an oil change interval, but no noticeable oil use yet as of a few days ago. Will keep updated as I can and please keep posting to remind me to post updates!
