Angry Engine consuming 2.5 qts oil per 3-4k miles. Help?

Hey everyone, I searched around for some posts but there is a lot of oil talk out there so sorry if I am posting again.

I own a 2009 TL-SH-AWD with 49,000 miles on it.

I have done two oil changes since I have owned it (owner for less than 1 year).

My first oil and filter change, I remember draining out 3 - 3.2 qts of oil and filling it wot about 4.5 qts. Seeing that this was my first oil change with the car, I figured that the change before was the culprit for low oil.

My last oil and filter change, I drained out 2 qts of oil and filled to about 4.5 qts again. This change was about 3-4k miles after the last oil change so this time I know that I burned about 2.5 qts of oil.

I have no leaks at all on the engine. Its clean as a whistle.

I am going to the "stealership" for them to look at this, but I am wondering if any of you have dealt with this before and/or know of any TSBs out there I can mention so that the service guy doesnt try to brush this problem off.

Also, if anyone can point me to links on here of others having this problem.

Thanks.

do a search, there have been posts on this pretty recently. I think Acura says that it is normal, but it is not. My 2010 does not leak/burn any oil.

People have had varying experiences. Some are observing no oil use, others have some. Yours is the most extreme I've seen. The only people who report any oil usage all seem to have the 3.7 AWD motor.

Mine uses about a quart every 4-5000 miles. In the old days, I changed oil every 3-5000 miles, so I suppose I'd hardly notice this. But with today's cars going 7000 plus on oil changes, it means you have to add a quart here and there.

But 2.5 quarts in 3-4,000 miles seems excessive to me, although most automakers' (including Honda's) official position - to the extent they have one - is that anything under a quart/1000 miles is "normal."

I'd have it looked at while it's still under warranty.

BTW, search "oil consumption" on this sub-forum (advanced search) to pull up the previous threads on this question.

honda says 1qt per 1k miles. My 09 tl seems to use 0 per change and I run my TL hard when I drive it. I even use the shift paddles to downshift. I have been using Royal purple since new, but I cannot say that has anything to do with it. I think your use is excessive. I would not be happy with that oil usage you have.

2.5 for 3-4k miles is outrageous. I would definitely be going to the dealership to get that looked at.

3.7 oil consumption issue as well.....kinda sucks

ive purchased mine back in November and then one day my oil light indicator came on telling me to pull over and check oil levels. I was shocked. And it was on the lower mark on the stick. so I topped it off and about over a month later the indicator came on again. that's when I knew it was a problem and I checked the forum to see if I was the only one. And im kinda relieved im not but there definitely lies a problem somewhere. And ive been standing by Japanese cars for a while and I don't want this to disappoint me. #hopefully the dealership has a solution

The dealership will take a detailed look at it if your car is consuming 2.5qts every 3,000 miles.

This equates to approx 1200 miles per qt.

Acura/Honda's stand is that it is "NORMAL" for the car to consume a quart every 1000 miles.

Since you're close to that number, take it in and have it covered under warranty before it runs out!

My 2009 TL SHAWD consumes about 1qt per 2000 miles. I have had the same issues as stated above. The dealer has looked at it twice and has talked to the Honda Engineers. They state what has been stated above. Anything over 1qt per 1000 miles and they get concerned.

It is not normal to consume that much oil.
A quart every 5,000 miles would be more like normal.
Have your dealer document your concerns in writing and keep bugging them about it.

'10 TL SH-AWD 6MT w about 25k miles. i just bought it a few months ago. when my oil life got down around 10%, the low oil indicator came on. i was about 2.5 qts low. im headed to the dealer to get it serviced & ill be tracking oil use now for sure! i drive it pretty aggressively - downshift alot, 20 - 30 daily highway miles at times near 75 - 80mph. by the info in the forum, it sounds like ill just have to monitor oil use & top off regularly.

There is a decent chance that burning that much oil will eventually cause problems with your catalytic converters as well.

Everyone, Please list your mileage.

However, these are also known to be very hard and take much longer to break in. I would suggest that this might be the reason why the 3.7 uses more oil. Especially if somebody switched to synthetic a little early. Some say this engine doesn't fully break-in until you're well past 10,000 miles.
