Drone sound

Hey guys,

So my car was at the dealer for the Tranny filter replacement and I picked the car up today. Once I got on the highway at speeds of 60mph, I started hearing a drone sound from the front area. It's the loudest at 60mph and then hard to hear with increase in speed. The troubling part is, the dealership already replaced 3/4 wheel bearings due to the same sound couple months ago. The only one they did not replace was the rear driver side one. Could that be the issue again or something else? Can wheel bearing really go bad within few months? Thanks in advanced

To check your front wheel bearing drive about 30-35 mph and make some real shape turns to the right and then left. This will take the load off the bearing. If it's a wheel bearing on either side then it will stop making that noise on one side or the other. It very unlikely that both bearings are going bad.

Both front bearing were already replaced few months ago.

Unless you have some kind of unusual non-stock tire/wheel combination those bearings should last longer that a Christmas fruit cake. Front and REAR bearing? Wow.

Car came with 20" rims, since then I put on stock wheels. And with stock wheels is when this all started.

If the tires are feathering or the tread is of bad design it can cause the roaring noise you describe. The best thing to do is look at your tires for the wear pattern.

So car came back from the dealer with a new rear wheel bearing and the noise is still there. They claimed the manager drove it and didn't hear anything. Going to call the guy tomorrow and see what the next step would be. Is it possible that it can be the drive shaft? Only hear this noise constantly at 60mph

I had a drone coming from the rear at 70mph on another car. The tire guy said it was the tires. The mechanic said it was the wheel bearings so I replaced the wheel bearings and the sound was still there. I replaced the tires and the drone went away.

So went to the dealer again today and now they say my tires are out of round. Advised me to switch the pirellis I have and get michelins. I can't see how brand new tires about 4 months old can be out of round. Claims the rear ones are the worst, but they all have a hop.

go to the tire place and let them balance/check the tires and wheels.

Also get the drone to occur and then shift down 1 gear. Does the noise still stay or disappear?

Ask them what they torqued the axle nut to. Maybe they just buzzed it up with an impact gun. That'll ruin a new bearing quickly! Likely around 170 lbs/ft. I'd check. Good luck.
