"Bouncy" RPMs
"Bouncy" RPMs
Hi Everyone!
I've noticed on two occasions when driving home driving at about 60 mph my RPMs will bounce from 1,500 RPMs to 1,700 RPMs. My speed is pretty constant (not driving with cruise control) and I can feel the car accelerate as the RPMs go up and then slow down as they go down. At my next scheduled maintenance I was going to have the transmission gurgle and software update completed (hopefully under warranty still!). Not super worried about it, since it does not happen often and if I speed up or slow down it goes away.
Has anyone else noticed this? Anything else other than the few TSBs I should be looking into?
Thanks! It's a 2013 TL SH-AWD Tech package that has about 45K miles and I've owned it since June.

Does it have a tendency to happen on inclines under light throttle? I had that exact issue, it was completely solved with a the transmission fluid flush and software update that the dealer is performing free of charge.

Yes! It was slightly up hill on a freeway and I would have just enough throttle to maintain speed. Thanks for the reply!
Yup head to thw dealer for the fluid flush and sofrware update and you should be good that was exactly what was happening to me and havent experienced it in almost a year since the dealer did that work. Sorry for grammar writing on phone.
Literally sitting in the dealership service lobby now getting the flush/“judder” service done now. The service guys really tried to talk me out of doing it, saying it would cause more problems if I truly wasn’t having these same types of issues. They should be able to experiene them ten seconds into a test drive.
I don't recall experiencing the bouncy RPM's but yeah, I noticed an immediate difference after the update. I'm surprised the service guys tried to talk you out of it. As far as I've heard, it's caused no problems. In fact, not fixingit has usually resulted in torque converter damage in the long run.

So I checked recently with my dealership and they said it hasn’t been done on my car, but due to the mileage they won’t cover the cost, which comes out to around $357. Anybody else gotten this same line from the dealership?
Wut?! For the software update or the ATF drain/refill? Or both? That's complete garbage. At the very least they should cover the software update. The ATF can be done by any mechanic (or by you).
That’s the cost for the update and drain/refill together. My car had around 130k when I bought it but apparently the previous owner didn’t do it and neither did the dealership.
Wow. That's
Since the problem is ENTIRELY Acura's fault, they should be taking care of it. I guess if it hasn't been giving you any trouble after that many miles you could leave it alone. Or contact Acura customer relations to see if they can help. Or lastly, ask them what just the update would cost. From what I gather, the ATF drain/refill was only added since the torque converter could be wearing quicker and shedding more material into the fluid. I don't believe it's somehow critical that it's replaced specifically for the update.

So my 2010 3.5 base has this same issue with the bouncy rpms, usually when they're low, as if it's struggling in that gear to maintain speed. It has 80000 miles on it, should the update be paid for/will it be the same fix if I get the fluid flushed as well? I'm wondering if this problem is specific to 3.7s or is it both
I am sitting at the dealership now for an oil change and AWD service. I asked about the transmission TSB and since they didn't hear it they wouldn't do it. I may try a different dealership.
For those of you that have had this done, was this covered under your powertrain warranty?
