Annoying Rattle from Passenger Seat

Hello All,

First issue with my 2012, I am having a rattle noise coming from the passenger seat area. I checked to make sure nothing was dropped in the area to cause the rattle. I know its coming from the passenger seat because when i push on the seat from the driver's side i can hear the noise.

Its almost as if something is loose, and everytime I hit a bump it causes a rattle. When someone is sitting in the seat it is almost nonexistant.

Does anyone have any idea where the rattle could be. If I could fix it myself I would prefer to then have the dealer tear up half the car to find it.

Isnt't there a TSB on that? I recall seeing someone even posting pictures on where the problem is actually occurring. Let me see if I can find it and get back to you....

Found the link but can't open the thread, maybe moderators can help...

grab the seat...does it move? does it rock at all with a passenger in the seat when you accelerate and brake?

just throwing this out there. i didn't have a rattle (since i was sitting in it all the time), but my driver's seat in the MDX "rocked" a little. i had the seat rails replaced. no problems now.

VQ...The fact we know there is a TSB, surely the dealer would know about it too. If you live in the same town as your dealership, just give them a quick call and ask them if there is a TSB for the seat (passenger) and what are the symptoms. A good dealer will work with you and not to withhold the information...after all, they will get some money for doing the work

Keep us posted....

BTW...There is one for the sunroof that occasionally "tick tick" too. Mine only does it when its warm outside....I have that TSB as a PDF if you ever need it.

UPDATE:

Took the car to the dealer this morning, they said that that the passenger seat rails are messed up, so they will be replacing them, however they don't stock the part so are ordering them. Looks like ill be getting new rails, and a whole bunch of scratches for them to fix when they lift the seat out of the car ... o joy!

I may have this too on my 2010. Thought it was in the door or dash, but today when I heard it, I pressed on the seat cushion and it seemed to stop.

Did anyone ever find the TSB?

Thanks.

I dont know if there is a TSB, but the car is back at the dealer the seat track replacement didnt fix it, so if they get it right this time ill let you know what it is ... supposedly they are going to take the entire seat apart and see whats going on.

Another update ... just picked up the car from the dealership.
They informed me that they removed the seat removed all the tracks retorqued everything to factory spec and now are not hearing the noise. (in my head i was thinking why wasn't it already torqued to factory specs) ... i havent heard the noise since i picked up the car, but its only been two miles of driving.

They filled up my tank because I had to return to them which was nice of them, but im not sure the problem is fixed.

I'll report back any updates or changes in the problem in the next couple of days

Could it be the passenger seat belt? I know it sounds dumb but I had a rattle in my corvette that I finally isolated to the unbuckled passenger belt clinking around. A slight re-position and it was fixed.

Don't always believe the dealer. They don't fix rattles most of the time they just let the car sit and tell you to pick it up the next day without fixing a thing. They did it to me several times. I could always tell if they actually touched it or not.

update on this ... i hate when threads arent updated with the solution.

The whole seat frame was replaced, noise has disappeared and seems like the proper fix. It took three times back and forth to get this fixed so it was frustrating, but atleast its fixed now.

hope this helps anyone else having a similar issue

Annoying Rattle from Passenger Seat

I've got the same issue with the passenger seat on my 2012. I think I found a bolt that needs to be tightened, but can't figure out what kind of wrench I need. The nut and bolt have sort of a star pattern. I don't know the proper name so that I can look for a wrench. Anyone know? Thanks

The star pattern bolts are typically referred to as "torx". You should be able to find torx wrenches, similar to allen wrenches, at any hardware store.

What bolt are you tightening? I've had the passenger seat rattle as well. I've managed to get rid of it by occasionally messing with a variety of things under the seat but it tends to come back.

Thanks, losiglow. Appreciate the help.

It's a shot in the dark, but I noticed a horizontal bolt on the left seat rail that looks like it's loose. If I had to guess it would be a similar size to a 10mm. The seat rails are firmly fastened to the floor. No give there at all. But, there is play on the left side around this bolt. If it works, I'll take a picture or 2 to see if I can show you the location. Not a rattle in the car except for that seat. Drives me crazy.

Thanks again.

Ah yes, I think I know what you're talking about now. I'll have to take a look at mine. Fortunately the rattle has disappeared for now, probably due to all the fluctuations in temperature lately.

Yeah, let us know if it works to eliminate the rattle. I do know that the rails have been replaced on a few TL's that were still under warranty since the dealer identified the rails as the reason for the rattle. But as far as I know, there isn't a formal TSB on it so it's not to say that any rattle from the seat would necessarily be due to the rails.

Update: That wasn't it. Now, I'm thinking there are some bushings between the floor and the seat that are wearing out. But, if that were true, you would think there would be some bolt travel in the bolts going into the floor. Puzzling. Now I'm moving onto a squeak in the right rear wheel that doesn't go away when I apply breaks or ebrake. Will post that in the wheel bearing section. Oy.
